Yr Wyddfa
Yr Wyddfa is the highest point in the British Isles outside the Scottish Highlands, located in North Wales. At an elevation of 1,085 meters above sea level, this Snowdonia National Park attraction offers a real challenge, as well as breath-taking scenery.
Towering over the village of Llanberis, you can look forward to a striking landscape of soaring peaks, deep valleys and glistening lakes.
Getting to Yr Wyddfa can be a little tricky, as is parking, so we suggest planning and booking ahead. The main car parks are at Pen-y-Pass and Nant Peris and can be pre-booked, whilst the car parks for the Watkin and Rhyd Ddu paths can be quieter. There is often plenty of parking options in Llanberis, where you can either get a taxi to one of the starting points or jump on board the Snowdon Sherpa bus link, which can take you to various starting points.
We urge you not to park along the roadside and seek the above alternative options.
6 Walking Routes up Yr Wyddfa
There are a number of routes to take on the challenge of Yr Wyddfa and its peak, however, there are just six recommended paths. They are all classes as hard and strenuous walks and you should allow at least 6-8 hours to complete the hike, no matter your fitness level.
- The Llanberis Path (9 miles) – This is a popular route for your first climb up, as it provides a gradual incline up the summit.
- Snowdon Ranger Path (8 miles) – A personal favourite route, as it winds up the side of the mountain, offering stunning views of the surrounding lakes.
- The Watin Path (8 miles) – This route takes you along some of the old copper mine workings, ideal for any history buff
- The Miner’s Track (8 miles) – Starting from Pen-y-Pass, this route starts off gradually until you reach Llyn Llydaw, where there is a steep climb to the top.
- The PYG Track (7 miles) – Also starting from Pen-y-Pass, this walking route is a steep start and joins the Minter’s Track before the final ascent. A great circular route!
- The Rhyd Ddu Path (8.5 miles) – If you’re looking for a quieter route, then this is the one for you! However, you need to be feeling brave and have sure feet, as you will be following a narrow ridge at the top.
