Cartmel Priory Gatehouse

Cartmel Prioty Gatehouse is all that remains of an Augustinian Priory dating back to 1188.

The building once consisted of a porter’s chamber, guardhouse, and Great Room where the Lord of Cartmel held his manorial court and monastic justice was dispensed.

After the reformation, the gatehouse was used as a lock-up, a school, a shop, and a museum. In 1946, it was given to the National Trust and the property is open on select days each year, although visitors can pass through the arch at any time.
