Travel to Ambleside by road
Ambleside is around 30 minutes by car from Junction 36 of the M6 motorway, making it relatively straightforward to get there from most major UK cities.
After leaving the motorway, take the A591 for around 15 miles. The road passes right through Ambleside so you can’t miss it.
Be sure to check your route for any unexpected roadworks or other issues before you set off.
We’d recommend that you take a look at the AA Route Planner.
Travelling to Ambleside by train
Ambleside does not have its own railway station, but Windermere station is around four miles away. It is served by trains running to and from Oxenholme Lake District station, from where it is possible to connect with West Coast Main Line services. These run to and from Glasgow and London and many points in between.
If you’re planning on taking a taxi from Windermere station, we recommend booking in advance as availability can be difficult late in the evenings and on weekends.
It’s also worth taking a look at virgintrains.co.uk to check for any engineering works before you make your travel plans.
