Travel to Bowness-on-Windermere by road
Most visitors to the Lake District choose to bring their own vehicle as it can make life much easier when you’ve arrived. Bowness-on-Windermere is about 13 miles from Junction 36 of the M6 motorway, making it easily accessible from London, central Scotland and Northern England.
Once you’ve left the motorway, take the A590 and then the A591, Bowness-on-Windermere is signposted from the moment you leave the M6 so the journey should be relatively straightforward.

Travelling to Bowness-on-Windermere by train
Bowness-on-Windermere has its own railway station, trains run from here to Oxenholme Lake District station. From here, change to and from London, Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham and other major UK cities. A small number of trains each day run directly from Manchester Airport to Bowness-on-Windermere via Preston and Lancaster.

Travelling to Bowness-on-Windermere by plane
There are no airports within the immediate area of Bowness-on-Windermere. You can fly into Manchester Airport and take a direct train to Bowness-on-Windermere – but this does take several hours. Flying is not generally a practical option unless you are travelling a great distance.
