Blackford Hill

Sitting within The Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hill Local Nature Reserve, on the edges of Edinburgh is this striking peak! Blackford Hill offers hikers a mixture of uphill treks and gorgeous views of the city’s rooftops.

Anyone interested in walking can easily reach the hill by car or by using Lothian Bus services.

The peak is part of the Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hill trail. Its paths are well-maintained and take you from the nature reserve’s entrance and past a wealth of sights. The most notable of these is the 18th-century Hermitage House.

Other sights on the trail include the cascading waters of The Weir and a serene, wildflower meadow. Continue past these to reach the hill’s steps.

Hike up the steep incline, through the 30 acres of woodland, until you reach the summit. Here, you can soak up a wealth of stunning sights!

The Royal Observatory, Edinburgh is amongst these, along with the other Braid Hills and the distant Arthur’s Seat. This is the perfect time to enjoy a well-deserved picnic!

Alternatively, head to the base of Blackford Hill to find the charming Blackford Pond. Why not rest your legs here and watch the paddling ducks?
