Blackwell retains many of its original decorative features. In the late 19th century, there was a movement against mass produced and impersonal designs and artists and craftsmen reinvigorated traditional techniques. The emphasis was once again on quality and natural beauty. From the tiles in the fireplaces to the wood panelling and the stained glass to the plaster work, Blackwell provides plenty of stunning examples of this architectural movement.
Outside, the gardens are bordered by beautiful flower beds and contain York stone paving, fragrant flowers, and herbs. On the lower terrace there is a long sweep of lawn from which you can take in the stunning beauty of the Lake District.
After exploring the house and gardens, take a seat in the tearoom based in the old scullery and kitchen. Sit near the original fireplace or, on sunnier days, on the elegant terrace and enjoy seasonal light lunches, cakes and tempting treats made from the very best local ingredients.
