The Catbells circular walk is a moderate ramble, requiring some scrambling and the option to explore the caves near Catbells – just be sure to bring your waterproof shoes!

Dogs are welcome on this Lake District walk if on leads, with plenty of nature to explore accompanied by spectacular views from both the Skelgill Bank and Catbells summits.

There’s also the option to divert to see the wonders of Manesty Park and Derwentwater too for those seeking a longer ramble.

Directions

  1. Begin at Gutherscale Lodge where you will find a small car park opposite. From the car park, turn left and then bear right at the fork in the road.
  2. Bear right again before taking the first left to lead you onto the main footpath. Continue for 0.4 miles to bring you to the mini-summit Skelgill Bank.
  3. From Skelgill Bank continue the route south for 0.5 miles until you reach Catbells summit.
  4. Follow the route from Catbells for 0.8 miles, bearing left where possible. After 0.8 miles take the path on the left before joining the main route again on the left past Manesty Park on your right.
  5. Bear left along the route for 1.7 miles to bring you back to your starting point.
