Eastgate Clock
The Eastgate clock, one of Chester’s most recognisable sights, is the UK’s second most photographed clock behind Big Ben. Sitting at the original entrance of the Deva Victrix fort, the old Roman gate was rebuilt to accommodate carriages during the Georgian era.
The current gateway dates from 1768 and is a three-arched sandstone building that carries the walkway that is a section of Chester city walls. The initial gate was defended by a timber tower that was replaced by a stone tower in the second century.
John Douglas, a Chester architect, created the clock, and on July 28, 1955, the entire structure—gateway included—was recognised as a Grade I listed building.
