Directions

  1. Begin at Steel Rigg Car Park, following the signs for Hadrian’s Wall. Upon reaching Hadrian’s Wall, turn left through the gate and follow the footpath downhill towards the foot of Peel Crags.
  2. Climb the steep stone steps to reach the top of Peel Crags, following the path alongside Hadrian’s Wall.
  3. Descend down the steps to Milecastle 39 and along the path, before descending down more steps towards the tree at Sycamore Gap.
  4. Follow the path to Highshield Crags and overlook Crag Lough. Continue along the path and through the woodland. Go straight across the path and through the gates.
  5. Venture across the farm track and go through the gate, signed ‘National Trails/Housesteads’. Continue along the footpath.
  6. When you reach Hotbank Farm, turn left and go over the stile.
  7. Go across the farmyard with the buildings on your left. Make your way through the gate and up the brow of the hill to the ladder stile at a gate and cross over it.
  8. Turn left and go over the stile next to the footpath sign. Go across the field and over another stile.
  9. Continue along another field following the signed path. Follow the path to the right before going over a stile in the wall.
  10. Continue straight with the barns and enclosure to your right. Follow straight still with the wall on your right.
  11. Cross the stile in the wall and keep straight on, passing another barn and a woodland.
  12. Keep to the stone track towards the gate by the road.
  13. Pass through the gate and head left to return to the car park.
