Directions

  1. Starting Point: Begin your hike at the Peak District Mining Muesum, and head to the main road where you will take a right and go past the fishpond with the Tufa column. Use the pelican crossing at the A6 and then take a right. Follow the road until you reach the first shop and take the left at the side of the shop, before bearing right and following the footpath up the hill.
  2. Temple Hotel: Once you have reached the top of the hill, you will find yourself on a road near to the Temple Hotel. You will then turn right and then take the first left, where you will see a sign pointing to the Heights of Abraham. Head to the gates of the attraction and turn right and follow the road downhill.
  3. The Woods: After you have followed the road downhill for approximately 100 yards, join the footpath to your left which will be signed to Matlock. Head up through the woods where you will cross a footbridge and then pass under the cable cars. Keep going along this path until you reach the second sign posting for Matlock, you will then emerge out onto a lane.
  4. St John’s Chapel: You’ll then take a right and then a second right onto St Johns Road, where you will find the St John’s Chapel. Just past the chapel, you will see a fingerpost where you will take a left. Head through the stiles and continue along the path, which eventually bears left.
  5. Riber Castle View: As you continue along the path, it will swing right again, and you should see some farm buildings ahead of you, as well as a fantastic view of Riber Castle. You should then reach a gap stile in the wall, continue through this and head diagonally left towards a gap in the hedge which is across the field.
  6. View of Matlock: You’re almost there as you should now see Matlock! Continue across the next field whilst bearing to the right to reach a stile midway. Continue on and follow the path across the next field, until you reach a second stone stile next to a house. Head through the stile, down the stairs, and onwards into the lane ahead.
  7. Railway Bridge: From the lane, you can cross over the railway bridge and onto Snitterton Road, where you can follow that to the end and take a left, followed by a right at the road crossing. Continue on over the river bridge and on to Crown Square, where you will reach the Matlock Tourist Information Centre.
