North Yorkshire Moors Railway
This marvellous heritage railway opened in 1836 and has provided amazing journeys for nearly two centuries. The train runs through the North York Moors National Park, between Pickering and Whitby.
A fantastic attraction for families, the railway lets adults bring children under the age of four years old for free. So you can treat all your loved ones to the delights of this vintage steam engine!
Originally, the railway was opened as the Whitby and Pickering Railway. It opened trade routes, bringing in tonnes of materials and passengers inland from the coast.
Nowadays, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a popular tourist attraction. It offers three timetables: The Seaside Special, Moors Explorer and Yorkshire Express.
The Seaside Special takes passengers on a scenic journey through the national park to the coast. At the destination, you’ll be pleased to find Whitby, with its Abbey and 199 Steps!
The Moors Explorer timetable is ideal for those wanting to jump off at a range of villages in the park. The train’s stops include Levisham and Goathland, where you can enjoy rural walks and sights.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway also offers onboard meals with its Pullman Dining Train. A range of services is on offer here, including the three-course Moorlander Lunch.
If you want to make your trip extra special, you can book the Great Western Saloon Carriage. On top of its sumptuous decor, you can enjoy the Signalman’s Buffet Lunch.
Aside from its stunning trips, the railway offers a range of tours and workshops. Highlights of these include the Digital Photography Experience and tours of the Grosmont Engine Shed.
