This lengthy, 7.5 mile walk encompasses endearing woodlands and across heather moorland, as well as encountering two iconic North Yorkshire landmarks, Roseberry Topping and Cook’s Monument.

You will begin this walk from Great Ayton station before you gain a reminder of the explorer Captain Cook.

Look forward to exploring this 7.5-mile circular in the majestic North Yorkshire National Park, where you will discover woodlands and heather moorland.

• There is a couple of steep steps up to Roseberry Topping; care will need to be taken

Directions

  • Begin the walk from Great Ayton Tourist Information Centre car park and turn right to walk along Newton Road before turning right at the mini roundabout and along Roseberry Crescent.
  • Walk along the 102 Roseberry Crescent footpath towards the railway line
  • Follow the path which runs along the railway before you turn right at the junction and cross the bridge over the tracks.
  • From here, the path bears right and into the woodland. At the next fork, take the path left with views over fields before you reach another fork which will take you to a signposted bridleway.
  • Pass Roseberry Lane and cross the track and continue straight ahead.
  • Continue the walk along the stepped path and continue all the way to the top of Roseberry Topping.
  • Descend the steps and continue across Roseberry Common and up the side of Little Roseberry
  • From here you will walk along the Cleveland Way with a wall on your right before you go down some steps to Gribdale Gate car park. You will then head up the forest track (signposted ‘Cleveland Way, Kildale’) before reaching the Monument.
  • At the fork you then follow the steep path down into woods before crossing the path and continuing straight on.
  • Head straight across Dikes Lane and walk up Aireyholme Lane before you turn left at the footpath and cross the stile and walk across the field. From here, you head into Cliff Ridge Wood.
  • Reach old metal gates and turn left down a stone stepped path leaving the wood and bear along the field edge.
  • Cross the railway and follow the path back to Great Ayton.
