St Collen’s Church

St Collen lived during the 7th century and came to Llangollen following a dream telling him to travel. Once he arrived, he built a hermitage and chapel.

Legend has it that a warlord terrorised the local community that Collen slew with a sword later washed in St Collen’s Well – a well that can still be seen today.

Collen spent the rest of his life in peace and established a church that once lay on the site of the current St Collen’s Church. The main body of the church was built in the 13th century, but the tower was later reconstructed in the 18th century.

Stonework dating back to the original 7th-century church, and worked by Collen’s hands, can still be found within the church today.

In the 19th century, further changes were made to the church, including an extension and a peal of eight bells.
