Whitby Abbey
After climbing the famous 199 Steps up to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, you’ll find dramatic views. These sweeping vistas cover the East Cliff headland, the picturesque resort town of Whitby and its harbour.

During your visit, you’ll learn all about how the first monastery was founded here in 657 AD. Along with its shelling in 1914 by the German High Seas Fleet.
After soaking up Whitby Abbey’s history, be sure to go on a tour of the astounding ruins. Bram Stoker did the same in 1897, which resulted in him penning the famed novel, ‘Dracula’. After exploring the ruins, why not visit St Mary’s Church and see if you can spot Dracula’s ‘grave’?
The Abbey is also home to the regular event: Illuminated Abbey. This family-friendly night takes place in October and you can enjoy food, live performances and spooky stories!
