  • "Alveton is a cozy place within 5 minutes walk of Alton Towers."

It was an ideal location for an extended weekend going on some rollercoasters. Unfortunately, it was severely let down by its uncleanliness. At first glance, everything seemed fine. However that quickly changed when we started preparing dinner. Every piece of kitchenware, plate, cup, cutlery, tray, etc was not cleaned properly. At worse it was outright dirty, for example the oven trays (4 of them) and wirerack, which didn't look like it's been cleaned at all for ages. We ended up having to do a lot of extra washing up as the dishwasher was not large enough to fit everything in. The bedrooms were not much better, with there being hair, crumbs, and other bits left on a few of the outer quilts and in 1 case a pillow. The lights in the en-suite bathroom upstairs did not work properly, stayed extremely dim when on, so you couldn't see anything inside. This was less than ideal when we were sharing this room with friends, as the only way to see in the en-suite bathroom at night was to keep the door open. The double bed in the en-suite was literally held together by duct tape, as discovered when we sat down on the end of the bed and the planks underneath the mattress gave way. We also found an opened packet of some make-up product behind a bedside table (most likely left by a previous guest), so this has clearly not been checked when "cleaning". It's all a shame as the location is great, the place felt cozy, and the owners were very kind. I wonder why the other reviews were so high? I thought that we just got unlucky. But with the state of the kitchen and the bedrooms, we couldn't have been the only one to encounter this.

  • "We absolutely loved our stay here!"

It was in an ideal location for our visit to Alton towers, literally at the entrance! Great facilities in the cottage. The only small thing I would say is that the downstairs bed and one of the doubles beds upstairs weren’t very comfy, the mattresses were quite thin. But this didn’t spoil our stay and I would recommend it to anyone!!

The place would definitively do with some TLC, furniture is dated, some lights didnt work, beds are very soft, and ingeneral it feels dated. We had thee families coming and sturggled to park the third car. Overall I woudl come back for night or two with a larger group, but not for a long stay with kids.

We felt a little unsafe especially climbing into the bath as we struggle with stairs and climbing. It was generally clean but a little dusty on bull ornament and tops of skirting boards. It was well equipped with cutlery and crockery, and the dishwasher and washing machine were very welcome.

  • "The accommodation is probably perfect for visitors just visiting Alton Towers and short stays."

Location is excellent. It did not feel like a home, limited cooking facilities/utensils/ chopping boards. Fire doors don’t shut. Luke warm water for showers on the last day. Although recognise Covid has restrictions we did not feel welcome, no welcome information nor recommendations to visit local area. Just felt very impersonal and lacked holiday energy.

Thank you for your comments. The owner is rather surprised by your feedback as she received a number of emails and texts from you with questions regarding a umber of different things, but at no time did you mention the above. The information pack is laminated and had slipped down the side which the owner replaced along with extra bedding for the sofa bed, extra towels, had the grass cut, had the tv's re-tuned however, they were working on your arrival and advised on the best time to visit Alton Towers park. You even spoke to a member of the cleaning team and commented on what a great stay you had. You will appreciate that any owner can only put things right for a guest if they are made aware of the issues during a stay. Can we finally mention that the fire doors do close. Thank you again for the feedback. Property Owner

  • "This holiday home is ideal if you are wishing to visit Alton Towers it was in a brief walking distance of around seven minutes."

The bedrooms are basic but functional, the double bed downstairs and double bed upstairs are very low to the ground so if you had mobility problems it is quite difficult to get out of them, the kitchen is also basic with utensils for example there was one and a very small oven tray that fitted in the oven the cottage says it will fit 10 but you would struggle greatly to cook using the oven, with just those there was a new oven tray there but it was too big for the oven, The cutlery plates etc was a mishmash (not that’s the end of the world) The furniture was very tired and dated, Some of the bedroom doors do not close properly, we could not get the patio doors open as the wood on the outside had swollen with the all the rain we had had, Towels were not provided this was not mentioned, but in all fairness it didn’t say that they were provided either. Don’t forget to take some logs and kindle if you are wishing to use the log fire, the communication with the owners was great I had an issue with the heating which she got back to me straight away and sorted, I just feel that if some TLC was put in to it , it will be a lovely little place

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments. We’re pleased to say that all of these points have been addressed as part of our recent maintenance review and the property has also been deep cleaned throughout. All doors have been checked and are working fine and we’ve added some extra utensils and crockery in the kitchen. We provide towels for all guests and we also provide a starter pack for the woodburner. It was our pleasure to be able to assist during your stay and we’re pleased that you found it an ideal base for your trip to Alton Towers. Property Owner

  • "Disappointed with tbe standars of the property."

Substantive leak in the shower, rear door handle comes off in your hand, dishwasher struggles to clean dishes even on a half load. No bbq or firepit, we were later told it neesed ti be removed for H&S reasons. Telling us this before would have been useful ul, as we brought £60 worth of meat to cook. After booking the property we were told that check ib tines had moved to 5pm and check out was 9am!. We had to fight to get some play on these times. We arrives at 1630 hours and the property wasnt ready, floors were still being moped. On arrival you could see that the ingerioir had been given a basic clean. Tables were sticky and cutlery and pans were still dirty. The only cleaning tools avaliavme to guests were a substandard soft sponge that we found hidden in the back id a cupboard and a broom. This was a very dissapointing property. Hiwever the holiday was saved d by good company the beatiful peak district. Would definitely return tothe area but will not stay here again or use the booking company.

Thank you for your comments. We’re sorry to hear that you found some issues during your stay. Some of these points relate to the measures we had to put in place during the pandemic; but we’re pleased to say most things have returned to normal, including the check in and out times for example. • "Disappointingly misleading description of Stylish, spacious, quality accommodation."

Would be much more suited to 7; needs some TLC, attention to detail and a good clean. Whilst the Wifi issue I detail below is hopefully unlikely to affect others, I think it only fair to mention the response of the owner when I emailed to ask her to consider a small compensatory refund and to give feedback on the property. I received no reply at all from my email or follow up text. The owner didn’t even do me the courtesy of sending an apology or acknowledging our feedback. It felt very much like she had my money and was not interested if there were any issues with the accommodation or if we’d enjoyed our stay. The Wifi was down for our entire stay. Obviously this wasn’t the owners fault however in an area with extremely limited mobile signal this significantly affected our time away. After trying to get the Wifi up and running the owners last contact with us was a short line to tell us midway through our week, “they [BT] are sending a new hub which will arrive tomorrow”. No hub arrived, we let the owner know but she didn’t contact us again. We couldn’t book anything online (Alton Towers being more expensive on the door), look at places to go, at menu’s or book restaurants. This meant that for the week our 10 people party had to drive round in a 3 car convoy looking for signal to be able to discuss where we could eat or go. Although I recognise this is a first world problem it did significantly affect the enjoyment of our holiday. I would challenge the description of this property as Stylish, spacious, quality accommodation as this was disappointingly misleading. • The doors of 2 of the bedrooms upstairs do not shut, limiting privacy. • There is no mirror in the downstairs bedroom (small point but links into quality). • The blinds on the dorma windows don’t block out any light so they don’t seem to serve a purpose? Blackouts would be better especially as this would be the obvious choice for a children’s room . • A double and single bed are camp-bed style and not very comfortable. The 2 people sharing the double roll into the middle all night and end up squashed together. • Only 2 out of 4 bedrooms have wardrobes to hang clothes and the 2 wardrobes provided are so short I couldn’t hang a knee length dress without it gathering on the floor. It should be standard in all rooms to have an adult size wardrobe and a few drawers. • The sofa and table would benefit from rubber feet as the slightest movement and they slide all over. • There are only 7 mugs so not everyone could have a hot drink at the same time. • General cleanliness was lacking throughout (cobwebs in many windows and dust on ornaments) but the worst was the kitchen, I had to wash up a lot of the pots and pans before we could use them. • The size of the dishwasher meant that we ended up having to wash up after meals because we couldn’t fit much in; this is not a dishwasher for 10 people. As there was no drainer we couldn’t leave pots to dry, resulting in meal times being more work than they needed to be. • The dinner table does just fit 10 people round but is a squeeze (there’s no leg or elbow room and once those at the end are seated they are there for the duration of the meal otherwise everyone has to get out to let them out) • It was pointed out in a September 2018 review that there are no doors in the fridge, there still aren’t so there’s nowhere to put open bottles. The fridge itself was just too small for 10 people and half of it is freezer, when it would make more sense to have more fridge than freezer. (Though I recognise this is personal preference and may not apply to everyone). • Space to hang wet towels for 10 people is very limited and there is nowhere to put wet coats, clothes or shoes when you come in from the rain, we had to make a makeshift clothes dryer out of the fireguard. A few more hooks on the back of doors and a foldaway clothes dryer would help. Overall we thought Alveton just wasn’t ‘spacious’ or designed for 10 people and had extremely limited storage for that many people. When compared to other properties we’ve stayed in it simply wasn’t value for money. I’d give the accommodation 3.5 out of 5 if it was a maximum of 7 people and given a good clean, unfortunately I’d only give the owner 1 out of 5 for her lack of interest in improving her property or caring if the occupants had a pleasant experience.

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a comprehensive review. Customer feedback is very important to us and helps improve the experience for future guests. We have refreshed the property description on the website to ensure everything is up to date and accurate and the photographs will be updated shortly. Blackout blinds are now provided in all bedrooms and extra utensils and crockery has been provided in the kitchen. The maintenance points have been addressed as part of our recent property inspection and the cottage has been deep cleaned throughout. We’re sorry that these issues impacted your stay with us. However I feel that the property is in need of a bit of tlc and a bit of a refresh and could definitely do with a good clean, we found cans of beer under the TV unit and bread rolls in the top of the fridge, and the floors needed sweeping, cleanliness in general was quite poor. Having said this we would stay there again, and had a fantastic weekend away.

Location great for Alton Towers and a range of other local activities. Information book provided in the cottage was very useful with the inclusion of menus for all the local eateries also. Bedrooms and bathrooms were clean and well presented. Beds very comfortable and baths were fantastic with no shortage of hot water. The only negative was that the kitchen and kitchen pans/utensils were not as clean as the rest of the property and could do with a deep clean/checking of pans etc. A great house to use with children. Well stocked DVD collection, open living space and and spacious bedrooms. Would recommend staying here.

We took 3 children with us and they loved the outdoor space at the cottage and having farm animals right over the fence was great for them! The cottage itself was a great size for our family (6adults and 3 toddlers) but decoration was a bit tired.
