  • "The cottage is in a lovely village only 4 miles from Pickering and in a farm setting located in the centre village centre with pub just up the road."

The cottage is very comfortable and has all you need to self cater. The front garden is an added bonus. We had a lovely time exploring the area of the North York moors and enjoyed the cottage.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at the Dairy House."

Location and parking are easy, the road from Pickering is quick and straight forward so can pop into town without much fuss if needed. Lots of local walks which our dog loved. The house itself is great as the utility room really takes the stress out of coming back from a walk with muddy shoes. Very well stocked throughout from cleaning supplies to kitchenware. The upstairs is not the most friendly towards tall people, unlike the rest of the house which is. The door frames to the upstairs bedroom and bathroom are quite low and you need to remember to duck. This is just a period feature of the house and others in the area looked much lower throughout. I would suggest taking the downstairs bedroom instead if above 5”10 to save your head. If I was to improve two things, 1) it would be potentially hanging the mirrors a little higher so they are more tall people friendly in the upstairs bedroom and bathroom; over the towel rain in the bathroom would be great. 2) add a desk fan to sit on top of the chest of drawers in the upstairs bedroom to circulate air at night as the only way to get the room dark is to close the door which can make the room a bit stuffy in hot weather. These were minor things in the grand scheme of things. The house is comfortable overall, especially the livingroom and kitchen.

Thank you Veronika for your thoughtful feedback, which we shall surely consider. Very pleased to learn that you enjoyed your stay. Best wishes, Mary Property Owner

We had a fab time. Only minor negatives were no welcome pack with teabags, milk etc which we usually get in holiday cottages, no spare bin bags and no foil/clingfilm which would have been useful.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed the cottage and I hope your received the £10 "Botham's of Whitby" voucher to welcome you. Many guests enjoy spending this in their Pickering shop on Yorkshire treats ! Property Owner

  • "A lovely cottage in a great location."

Generally no complaints except, the single bedroom is really dated. The bed is in need of a new mattress as it sags in the middle, and it’s a tired looking room. Also the garden has no gate, which I had missed in the description, so you need to be aware of this. Well equipped kitchen if you want to cook, we didn’t, but it would have been easy to do so. Great utility room with washer and drier The owner had contacted me a week before which was a nice touch. Overall a great stay in a great location

Surprisingly the single room is not often used, so thank you for the heads up and feedback. Mary Property Owner

  • "Cleverly converted farm building with everything you need for an active or inactive holiday!"

The utility/boot room was ideal for cleaning a wet dog, mucky boots and especially good clothes drying facilities. Warm and plenty of seating and space - a bit of a tardis really, looks smaller from outside but it isn't at all. Lots of interesting walks on the doorstep with plenty of information provided. Our dog had a fantastic time. A good value stay in mid March. Only slight niggle was that the sofa cushions are a little tired and thinning, which became noticeable of an evening. Overall a very good, well equipped place to stay to explore this area of the North Yorkshire Moors. We will certainly stay here again.

Thank you for your positive feedback, we look forward to seeing you again and in the meantime, we'll think about how to refresh the sofa! Mary Property Owner

  • "What a beautiful place to stay."

Dairy House is charming, clean, comfortable and in a great location. We had a wonderful week away. You can tell that’s it’s a property that is loved by the owners and that they want their guests to feel at home for the duration of their stay. The location is great for getting out and about, whether driving or walking. The communication from Mary was clear and precise. Having a call from Christine whilst we were there, making sure that we had all that we needed was very much appreciated. We loved our stay and would definitely recommend booking.

Thank you so much Karen, we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Merry Christmas! Mary Property Owner

The house is in a lovely quiet area. Our only minor observation is that the shower in the upstairs bathroom could be improved. However this did not detract in anyway from our very enjoyable holiday. Thanks to Mary for keeping in touch.

Thank you Kathleen, we are always seeking to improve the cottage and the upstairs shower is certainly high on the list - we just need to get through the oil costs of this winter first. Mary Property Owner

  • "The Cottage was lovely."

The only thing we would change is the dining table which was only a gateleg and consequently uncomfortable. Trying to avoid the huge wooden structure in the centre and the legs at either end in the middle was impossible. Also, it would have been better if there was an alternative lightweight cover for the bed as the quilt was very hot. Even so, we enjoyed our stay very much.

Thank you for your feedback, we have a lovely new dining table, without a gateleg! Kind Regards. Property Owner

  • "Our week at the cottage was very good."

It is comfortable and well furnished. The village is lovely and the pub serves excellent food Friday, Saturday and Sunday to eat in or take away. It’s only 4 miles from Pickering but we were unlucky as roadworks caused a lengthy diversion. Fresh flowers and a bottle of wine made a lovely welcome gift. Lovely walks around the village as well.

The only minor fault is that the garden is not enclosed for our dog which could be rectified with a fence an gate otherwise it could not be faulted. Enjoyable watching the horses train in the nearby paddock from the living room window.

  • "Dairy House was cosy, surprisingly spacious and well- equipped."

Lots of plus points: log fire and generous basket of logs, secure bike store (for 2 bikes), quite a good selection of books / DVDs / games provided, location on the edge of the North York Moors near Pickering, Helmsley, Dalby Forest, Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, Scarborough and other places on the coast, village playground with zip wire and football pitch (in March the tennis net was down and the pitch was too muddy anyway for tennis), village pub. Everything went smoothly with Sykes: booking, payment, cottage instructions etc. Cottage owners were great and made a courtesy phone call to confirm details and sent us useful extra information about the cottage and local area. We even had a call from the local contact for the cottage after we'd arrived to check everything was ok. The complimentary bottle of wine was a nice touch. Highly recommended.

  • "The Dairy House is a lovely place to stay."

It is very spacious and comfortable. The house is spotlessly clean and very welcoming. It is set in a quiet location next to a farm, and the surrounding scenery is beautiful. It has a lovely homely feel and is very well equipped. There is a downstairs bedroom and shower room which are very handy for disabled guests. There is a friendly pub nearby which serves good food. The owner is very helpful, as is the lady who looks after the place. Nothing is too much trouble, and a lot of thought has gone into making this house a real home from home. I would highly recommend Dairy House and would definitely stay there again.

The property

A quality sympathetic conversion of an old stone farm building, resulting in an individual holiday home of great character and comfort. With an exceptionally high standard of furnishing and equipment, this cottage nestles high on the moors in a quiet National Park village above Newtondale where the steam trains whistle below. In the 19th century, the property housed a horse driven threshing machine and more recently it became a dairy and features a unique stone fireplace, along with massive timber beams, which may have come from oaks in Newtondale or from ships broken up at Whitby. Ecologically aware, Dairy House offers spacious accommodation over two floors with three bedrooms, a bathroom and a shower room, and provides a light and airy feel, whilst it also feels cosy in winter. Footpaths nearby wander through wild flower pastures, beautiful woodlands and on to the moors.

Cyclists can enjoy gentle meanders or challenging banks and a few miles away, Dalby Forest offers mountain biking trails for all levels. Enjoy a steam railway ride, which takes you up the valley and across the moors to the coast - one of the most spectacular railway journeys in Britain. A delightful cottage offering peace and tranquillity.
