  • "Beautiful house in an amazing location, very clean and well equipped."

We very much enjoyed our stay. However there were several important issues that need sorting. Hot tap in the kitchen was a dribble, oven went onto dangerous cleaning cycle while grilling. Many of the toilet seats are loose and slip, in use. No firewood on arrival or when reported as missing. When lighting log burner in the down stairs living room it causes the master thermostat to shut off the heating to the rest of the house.

  • "The farmhouse is in a beautiful setting, the scenery and views from the windows were stunning."

The property is very spacious with plenty of room for large groups. We particularly liked the large kitchen/diner and the upstairs lounge. The kitchen was very well equipped although we did struggle a bit with the cooker as the instructions seemed complicated. Minor faults were no hand towels in any of the bathrooms and the plug in the sink in the en-suite (downstairs bedroom off the kitchen) was not working properly. This did not spoil our trip though, our party of 9 had a great time and were fairly impressed with the property.

Thank you for your thoughtful review! We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed the beautiful setting and spaciousness of the farmhouse, especially the kitchen/diner and upstairs lounge. We appreciate your feedback regarding the cooker instructions, hand towels, and the sink plug, and look forward that these are addressed for future guests. It’s wonderful to know that despite these minor issues, your group had a great time and were impressed with the property. We hope to welcome you back again soon! Kind regards, Shiela Property Owner

  • "A lovely house in a beautiful spot."

We were a family group of 12 ranging from age 5 to 78 and it felt spacious and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked with equipment and the welcome drinks, biscuits etc were much appreciated. The only thing that could do with some improvement is the outside seating area as the benches around the wooden tables are pretty rotten, some of the deckchairs are quite tatty and the BBQ has a hole in it. A hairdryer would also be a useful addition to the house. We had a great time and would recommend this property to others.

Hi Hannah, Thank you so much for your kind words and for choosing our property for your family gathering. We're delighted to hear that you all found the house spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped for your stay. It's wonderful to know that the welcome drinks and treats were appreciated by everyone. We sincerely appreciate your feedback regarding the outside seating area, the deckchairs, and the BBQ. Your comments are invaluable as they help us to continually improve our property. We will be addressing these issues promptly to ensure a better experience for our future guests. Additionally, we will consider your suggestion of adding a hairdryer to the house, as guest comfort is our top priority. Thank you once again for your recommendation. We're thrilled that you had a great time, and we hope to welcome you and your family back in the future. Kind regards, Sly Property Owner

  • "We loved our holiday home - fabulous location and views (with several excellent walks from the doorstep, and lots of beautiful and interesting places within 30 minutes' drive), plenty of room for 9 of us (3 generations), well equipped (2 massive fridges, freezer, 2 dishwashers, washing machine/tumble dryer, barbecue, TVs / DVD player, etc."

) - ALL GREAT - and helped by the weather being kind to us all week! At the end of the stay we really didn't want to leave (especially "grandma" who was threatening to lock herself in and stay there permanently!). Despite being relatively remote, Bruce opens the Thwaite Arms most lunchtimes and evenings, and several supermarkets deliver online food orders (and good pubs at Carlton and West Witton are not too far away, serving meals). We also collected a barrel of beer from Wensleydale Brewery at Leyburn, which lasted us the week! Very minor points: could do with somewhere to put "compostables" (e.g. a compost heap); and the showers could do with racks/shelves to put soap, shampoo etc. ("grandma" would have also benefited from a handrail in the shower).

Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! We're delighted to hear that you and your family had such a fantastic stay at our holiday home. It sounds like you made the most of the beautiful location and all the amenities we offer. We appreciate your suggestions regarding the compostables, handrail and the shower racks. We'll definitely look into all the feedback as we know it will help enhance the comfort and experience of our future guests. Thank you once again for sharing your experience. Would definitely recommend Deerclose West as a holiday destination for families or groups of friends. The description was not fully up to date ( WiFi is now excellent) and no doubt future visitors will benefit from the information planned for the house App . We struggled a bit with a lack of info, but the instructions for use of the oven were absolutely invaluable. We would suggest some money be spent on new outside furniture, the provision of standard wine glasses, more doorstops for the hall/ utility room doors and keys to all the outside doors.

Curtains should have black out linings. We asked for wine glasses with stems and did not get any so had to buy them. We asked for large cafetières but did not get any just told they had been broken previously. we discovered that the heating was remotely controlled which seems strange. I had to phone up to get the heating turned down. We got an internet shop from Sainsburys which was good. The cooker is very hard to operate it took three brains to work out the controls even with the instructions. The microwave is poor at 700 watts so is slow. Views great.

Hi Stephen, Thanks for taking the time to leave us feedback. We're delighted to hear that you loved the farmhouse and that you were able to get out and about. We are incredibly lucky to have such outstanding beauty all around the property - and it sounds like you made the most of it. • "The property has a few maintenance issues."

The downstairs toilet would not flush, there was a broken bulb in the downstairs bedroom with the freestanding bath. The sink plug in the bathroom of the “quiet” bedroom did not work and water came in through windows and ceiling of bedroom with freestanding bath. Also the doormats need changing as dirty and old These are maintenance issues only as otherwise property was very comfortable.

Hi Valerie, Thanks for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, as it enables us to better manage the property and arrange rapid resolutions to any issues. I'm sorry to hear that you experienced some issues. Thanks to your feedback, we were able to very rapidly replace the entire downstairs toilet. The rain ingress is more of a mystery, as our windows are PVC and the walls are 2ft thick - however it is possible that the December storms may have caused a gutter to block and overflow, so we have asked our team to find the cause of this and resolve it. We have also asked our admin team to replace the mats. I'm pleased to see that despite these issues, you were able to enjoy the peace and space of the property and surrounding valley and still saw fit to kindly give us a great feedback score. • "A lovely ‘off the grid’ stay!"

The property is brilliant in all aspects and we enjoyed our stay. Beautiful countryside with lovely views. If I were to nitpick though, the only problem I had was with the wifi. I was foolish enough to think I could work for a couple of days during the stay but with a terrible wifi and zero cellular reception, this was impossible.

Hi Venkat, Thanks for your feedback; I'm pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay and relished the 'off-grid' feel of the place. We have certainly historically found that the wifi is good enough for emails or webpages but not fast enough to stream films or hold 'Zoom meetings' etc, so I'm very sorry that you weren't able to work effectively whilst away on your break. The good news is that after fighting to get fibre to the premises since 2016, it was finally connected this month and is commissioned next month (March), so should you wish to come back for another work-cation, you'll find the wifi is lightening fast! The lack of mobile network is highlighted on Sykes' main page for the farmhouse - but again, there are 5G masts planned along the valley, so we hope this will also resolve the lack of mobile signal (an issue for all properties this far up the valley!) Many thanks. Property Owner

Hi Tom, Thanks for taking the time to leave us your feedback. Wow! - sounds like you absolutely LOVED the place; that's very rewarding to hear, when we spend so much time trying to make everything perfect (but being human, we occasionally make mistakes!) The rooms were a great size with the added bonus of an ensuite for all the adults. The kids loved the mezzanine with the football table and the garden was a fab size for them to burn some energy on. The house was well equipped with a huge oven, double kettles, toasters and dishwasher which is a great touch when there's 16 of you and everyone wants a cuppa or a bit of toast. Coverdale is a totally unspoilt hidden gem. It’s a great location for those who enjoy walking and running. There are stunning views from all the windows in the property and children have lots of safe outdoor space for play. Places of interest like Jervaulx Abbey, Middleham and Aysgarth Falls are within easy reach. Further afield, the children particularly enjoyed the Workhouse Museum and the Crypt in the Cathedral in Ripon. The best place for food shopping is Leyburn where there is a well-stocked Co-op and Campbells, a traditional family-owned grocery shore. Middleham has an excellent fish and chip shop and a number of real ale pubs.

The beds and linen were clean, and enough towels and tea towels were supplied. All equipment worked well and there was enough of everything to cater for the 13 people on our stay. The kitchen, bathrooms, toilets etc were spotless and there is lots of rooms and space to spread yourselves out. There was however, a dangerous loose flagstone leading to the patio which needs urgent attention! And the narrow road leading up to the cottage has two unavoidable pot holes which really do need filling in. A better placed sign with the name of the cottage at the entrance to to road would also be really helpful, as the road is easily missed! I'm sure that the locals enjoyed watching us trying to find it!! The location of the property is very calm, tranquil and quite isolated. There are no shops for forgotten things but there is lots of peace and quiet! We had a great holiday at Deerclose.

Secondly we couldn’t find any wine glasses which was surprised us considering the amount of glasses available Many thanks Paul

Hi Paul, Thanks for your feedback, which we're grateful for, as it provides us with the information we need to help provide the best experience to our guests. I'm glad you had an amazing time, celebrating your 50th along with your family and friends. We love to hear about stays like yours. Although we already provide 2x picnic benches with seats, I would love to hear more about how we could alter our outdoor seating area - would you be kind enough to contact Sykes and ask them to forward your ideas to us please? Regarding the glasses, I understand the confusion, we have plenty of wine glasses - but they're stemless, so look quite similar to the tumblers that we also provide. Some people love them, some...not so much! - but we took the decision to go with stemless wine glasses as they fit into the dishwasher better and are harder to knock over. Thanks for pointing this out, as I don't think we'd made it clear to guests up until now. I hope you'll consider coming back for your 55th or 60th! Many thanks, Jimmy. Property Owner

We'd like to apologise to our guests for an unfortunate situation where one of our two boilers failed on a Saturday afternoon, temporarily resulting in no hot water for part of the farmhouse. The plumber was contacted immediately but was on holiday until the Monday. Given our remote location, there was no other plumber option. Our plumber came out on Monday morning and fixed the issue, providing hot water for the rest of the week. Our guests also found the immersion switch for the faulty boiler, so there should have been hot water available approximately 45 minutes after being switched on, despite the boiler itself not working. We do our best to maintain all electrical and plumbing services, with both boilers being checked and serviced annually. We apologise once again for this rare situation. There is masses of space inside, which is conveniently laid out, and the garden and surrounding area was perfect for games of hide and seek. In quieter moments the views across the dale are peaceful and we were fortunate to have sunshine almost every day to enjoy the seats outside the kitchen. There were some wonderful sunsets too. We went on a few walks locally but the main place the children enjoyed was the ford and meadow more or less at the bottom of the drive. (One thing we should have done was to bring a map with us; there are masses of footpath signs but the paths aren't always very clear on the ground and we were unable to find the promised map in the house.) We had a few trips to local places - Middleham Castle, Jervaulx Abbey, Masham and others - which we all enjoyed. There is a huge amount to see in the local area. You have to get used to the single track access in Coverdale, though. On the day we left the road in the direction of Leyburn was blocked which meant we needed to go up the valley to join the A1. This can easily add an hour to the journey. But we enjoyed the peace and the relaxation which the house offers; it is not a place to come and rush about! Thank you for letting us stay in the house, which we would highly recommend. All of the joining information was friendly and helpful and we were made to feel very welcome from the start.

Every attention to detail and providing comfort. Had to put up a paper sign 'Duck' as my 2 sons who are 6 ft + kept banging their heads when going from small kitchen into lounge! The notice helped though. Everyone said they would like to visit again!
