  • "Had a lovely holiday and cottage is in a really nice location."

We thought the cottage was a little tired and could possibly do with a face lift. Was a good base for us but think it needs a little TLC. Would definitely stay there again.

  • "We had a comfortable stay in lovely surroundings, handy for the Cleveland Way and Cinder Track walks and close to gorgeous woodland."

There is a pleasant garden area. The bedrooms were nicely decorated but all downstairs rooms lacked carpets - understandable if people are bringing dogs, but not very cosy. There was a minimum of crockery and cutlery, and fuller housekeeping/equipment instructions would have been appreciated. The bathroom taps need new washers. Had I realised the bathroom was downstairs I probably would not have booked. Might be worth mentioning this in the description.

And dirty mop left in cupboard made kitchen stink so removed and washed out cupboard. Extractor of cooker broken so activated smoke alarm more than once. Welcome book out of date as still full of COVID protocol (note left on table) Ideal property for a short break, we enjoyed our stay and above is not a criticism just observation that may make some one else's holiday just a tad better. I would book again if holidaying in the area as overall perfect location and met our needs.

We knew the cottage was dog friendly when we booked although we didn't take our dogs. There was a large amount of dog hairs in the living room but we found a dustpan and brush and got rid of them. Sofas could do with updating as they are looking a bit tatty, this didn't affect our stay though. Bedrooms were a great size, beds were comfy and bedding clean. Parking was tight but we managed fine. Overall we had a lovely, comfortable stay and would book again.

  • "Overall, a very comfortable, clean and well-equipped accommodation."

However, the oven and extractor fan were in a filthy state and probably why the extractor did not work. It was not indicated in the website information, & neither did photos show, the three holiday properties are linked together. Our property appeared to originally form one house with property number 2. Some walls transmitted sound easily. If all three properties were occupied, there is the potential for it to be noisy and lack privacy. The parking spaces were very tight and accessed through a gap in a wall. If the three properties were occupied it would be impossible for three large cars to all use them but there is one alternative space & some on road parking in the village The location in Scalby is great base for trips and it is a lovely village. There are two good pubs and one is a great gastro pub (the Plough) and there is also a good bakery/eatery and newsagent store, all within walking distance. Also, a good local supermarket and half hourly bus service to Scarborough. Overall, we enjoyed our stay which was aided by the other two properties being largely unoccupied.

The visitor file needs updating, I couldn't find the instructions for the oven or washing machine and a few cushions on the sofas would help, but these are just niggles which can easily be rectified.

  • "This property was not up to usual standard we have come to love for Scarborough properties through Sykes."

The property smelled badly of damp, was not overly clean, crumbs behind the toaster, dirty floors which I'm not sure were swept let alone mopped. Toilet was leaking upon arrival, when reported we were asked to flush with a bucket until the next day, we did, next day we did get the washer fixed and toilet working again. Kitchen curtain pole fell off whenever you touched the curtains, just sub standard and very basic furnishings. Trip was topped off by 15 minutes before we were leaving the owner came in and ripped up the bathroom flooring, complete lack of consideration and customer service, there was no forward booking and this could have surely been done after we had departed.

There were some issues such as extraction fan for cooker not working so fire alarms kept getting set off when cooking, no stand up shower facilities so had to kneel in the bath and the postcode for the property also sends you to the local golf club (when leaving the golf club turn right and the accommodation is on the right just after then bend) But to be fair the accommodation was value for money and is situated close to all the sites that we wanted to see, we will be booking her again on our next visit.

"down Church Hill, turn left at the junction and the cottages are on the right". Other than that, the cottage could not be faulted and the location is ideal for driving a short way up into the forest for miles of lovely walks or down to the beach at Scalby Mills (dog-friendly all year round). Also a short walk to the well-stocked village shop and a short drive to Proudfoots supermarket. Perfect! Definitely worth a return visit.

  • "Due to Covid 19, the communal areas in the complex were unavailable, the tumble dryer and the garden which are both shared between the three properties were not in use which was unfortunate."

these measures would have had less impact had some of the chairs been placed just outside the door but instead this area was given to two large wheelie bins to each property, I would suggest that the bins be relocated to the garden together with a washing line for each property. The complex would have benefitted enormously by some nice planting and some weeding as the outside area did not reflect the pleasant interior. The property was very clean and welcoming, the bedrooms were comfortable and nicely appointed. The bathroom was nice but the bath was on the small side, the facilities would have been greatly improved by fitting a proper shower either instead of the bath or just an over-bath shower would be great. The kitchen was lovely but unfortunately, there was no room for the storage of food in the cupboards and not everything can be stored in the fridge. The sofas in the lounge were a bit too low and a bit tired and lumpy and a few more pictures on the walls would have been nice. The little complex was located in a very beautiful area with a stream running alongside the pavement and a little bridge featured in the scene together with a lovely church and stone-built cottages.

There was no mention in your description of the bathroom and toilet that it was downstairs. As 80-years-olds there is an almost obligatory visit to the loo during the night, and navigating the very steep stairs in the middle of the night was not good at all. Also the hand held shower was a big let-down and not convenient to say the least. Also the question of price! Our neighbours at No. 3 Low Hall Cottages paid around £450 for a two-bed two-bathroom ground floor cottage against £750 for No. 1 which seems quite disproportionate. Also I must reiterate other occupants of these cottages, that in this day and age surely wi-fi is must.

The village is attractive and the pub and hotel seemed popular though we didn't use them (had small child with us). The cafe/restaurant looked good too but useless to us as it closed at 4pm! Back to the cottage, we were very comfortable there but it really does need a shower, or at least a shower curtain to use with the hand-held one. Really enjoyed the place. Mark was most helpful and made us feel welcome. Very quiet area and good for dog walking. Within easy reach of the coast . A couple of minor issues. The bath could do with re grouting and the front blind in the spare bedroom needs some attention. I have read horror stories from people who have used other companies, so I wasn't sure what to expect as it is our first time with Sykes, but I was pleasantly surprised. An added bonus was that you could sit outside and hear local concerts from the outside theatre in Scarborough, and we loved hearing Nile Rodgers!! Would use Sykes again. Thank you for a fab week. It was our Ruby Wedding and our dogs birthday while we were there, and this holiday was also a celebration after I had a life saving operation earlier this year!

  • "The cottage itself was reasonably comfortable but the main factor was that we were lead to believe it was all on one level."

I thought, at first, that we had got the interpretation wrong but the guests in No. 2 were of the same opinion. My wife has limits on her mobility so rather than lose the holiday, we made compromises during our stay to counteract her inability to climb the stairs. Regarding the accomodation, we felt the 'facilities ' were sparse. Just four knives, forks and spoons; limited crockery which meant the constant need to wash up to get enough to eat the meal. The decor was also sparse... one picture throughout, one vase but no flowers (not even Plastic) and no easy chair..just the 'functional' two seater couches. The setting would make it a great place with just a few inexpensive extras. Again 'sparse' comes to mind

It is the perfect location for visiting Filey, Scarborough, Whitby and Staithes. The cottage itself is currently lacking in information and a few personal touches (maybe a vase of dried flowers and a couple of ornaments). It could do with a WiFi connection, some holiday leaflets and a visitor comments book. We had no idea when the heating would be coming on/going off and only found out, by speaking to the painter at No 3. The heating is apparently on constantly set to a certain temperature! Just a couple of minor tweaks would give this cottage a 10/10. However, currently I would say it's an 8 1/2 out of 10. I have to add though, that it was immaculately clean.
