• "We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at Tan Y Coed."

  The property was accurately described in all details. It is an old property which is "well used" and perhaps could do with "a lick of paint". However, it suited our group fine. Externally there are signs of neglect specifically in the outside seating area and the pathways and steps down to the beach. Finding the property from the road from Menai Bridge was difficult,and both our parties needed several "passes"| Mention of the traffic cone on the wall would be helpful ( that is if it is a permanent fixture|). Driving away from Tan Y Coed on to the road is a tricky manouvre, needing great care. In all,our holiday at Tan Y Coed was came up to expectations,and the location and views from the house were wonderful.

• "This is a property full of history and charm."

  The views are spectacular. The bathrooms and kitchen have been modernised and parts of the rest of the property would benefit from this. There is a smell of mustiness in the two main seating areas which is a real shame. These areas were also dusty due to old furniture. The sofas in the sitting room need replacing, as does one of the beds in the twin bedroom. The carpets also need replacing. The property has so much potential and it is a shame that there has not be investment to maintain it to its potential. That said, its location is spectacular and we enjoyed sitting outside and admiring the views over the Menai Straights. The lack of upkeep is reflected in the rental rate for the property but it is a shame that such a grand house is not at its best.

• "Our family had a fabulous stay at Tan y Coed."

  Very Clean, the amenities were fantastic. Everything we needed. The kitchen is so well equipped. The games and in particular the dolls house were really good. Our 7yr old granddaughter was in her element. We had lots of fun. The views from the bedrooms are amazing and the terrace outside is perfect for BBQs in the evening. Location is perfect. Highly recommended!

  The beds were all very comfortable, and there was everything we needed to cook for all of us . The snooker table was a great addition and used frequently when the little ones were asleep.....a lovely day was spent in Beaumaris, only 5 or 10 minutes drive away ..

• "This house is amazing, the kitchen is so well equipped, the big electric range was brilliant we did a huge easter roast lamb dinner for 11 and had more than enough pans, roasting trays, and serving dishes."

• "Loved our stay in Anglesey In Tan y Coed…… House and views spectacular."

  Could not believe the size of the property. Master Bedroom was amazing like your staying in your own Stately home. Loved the homely feel with photographs all around, and furniture in kept with the age of the property. Some tired areas, en-suite in master bedroom is old and the heating does not work so was unusable. There were other bathrooms and showers to use which had already been modernised so I would imagine the en-suite would be next. Could do with a deep clean in some rooms, and perhaps lick of paint on doors to freshen up surroundings. Would not want to modernise this place as the character and charm makes it unique that’s what we loved about it. For all you ghost hunters, one of our party felt a presence and from her description seemed pretty well matched with a person who had lived there! Thank you too Lucy who was so helpful with all her extra info. Thank you for making my 50th birthday so memorable The Mellor Family, Horton Family, Aunties, Uncles and Nieces.

• "This year our family - ages 4 to 79 - was able to spend a Christmas week together at Tan Y Coed."

  Tan Y Coed is a delightful big house in a beautiful location on the Menai Strait. Even in the wind and driving rain of this winter, we were warm and comfortable and together for Christmas. We were able to admire the amazing view across to Bangor and (sometimes, when the cloud lifted) Snowdonia. The house has been well used and well loved by its owners, with great character. It felt like staying in a family's holiday house, I think because it still is that. The house is not modern, and one should not expect today's new build standards, but it had everything ten people needed and there is evidence of gradual modernisation done well - some replacement windows, updated bathrooms, a new oven/hob/range. We were very comfortable, with ample space to celebrate Christmas across the big (red) reception room and a smaller (blue) snug, as well as the billiards room, of course. There was even a Christmas tree and tinsel available, which helped to lift our spirits in front of the wood burner. The kitchen/diner easily facilitated a festive feast and seated ten or twelve satisfactorily. (We decided converting the snooker table would be just too big.) We can imagine the spectacular location in the summer, with blue sky, a barbecue on the terrace and watersports below, and we would return without hesitation for the right gathering. Other notes: One TV, how refreshing to not have screens everywhere! Ample wifi. Games available for all ages. Supplies readily available very locally; bigger shops in Bangor not much further. Crabs readily catchable from the pier in Beaumaris using borrowed lines and nets, even in December, to the delight of youngsters.

• "Dirty, seriously damp and smelled awful."

  Most of our group left early, couldn’t cope with the state of the place, damp smell and one room uninhabitable. Sykes cottages apparently visited the property after we complained and put this down to the character of the building. None of this was apparent when I spent a fortune booking a speciial break with the family to mark a significant event. Holiday ruined. I won’t be trusting Sykes again.

  Dear Anthony, I'm sorry that Tan y Coed didn't meet with your expectations. We have had some unusually wet weather recently which always affects the house as it is built into the rock face. Our heating usually counteracts this problem but we had a major issue with the boiler which was only just resolved in time for your arrival. I can only imagine that the house did not have enough time to completely warm through and dry out again before your stay. We have maintenance scheduled for November to re-plaster along the corridor to the kitchen which is always a problem area. This will hopefully improve any damp issues in the future. Apologies again. • "This is a fantastic house for a large group of family or friends."

  It is vast, full of interesting things, and with wonderful views over the Straits. It has access to its own jetty, and beach at low tide, and crabbing lines and wetsuits can be borrowed. Both the house and its contents are showing their age, but while this makes for some maintenance issues, it also makes for a relaxing holiday. The contact for the property was very approachable and helpful. The two sitting rooms mean that younger members of the group can have a space of their own, and the full-sized billiard table is a terrific asset. There is plenty of outside space for good weather, and lots of games for bad. Just be aware that whoever has the enormous master bedroom and its ensuite may experience some envy from the rest of the group!

• "We had a fantastic stay here."

  We had a large adult family group and it easily accommodated everyone. Kitchen has everything in abundance, and a large table for everyone to gather around. Billard room and table-tennis plus loads of games kept everyone happy. Views absolutely incredible and patio was an excellent space we used alot, watching the world go by on the water. House was in a great location for exploring. Downsides for us, one lovely bathroom which everyone wanted to use. It had other bathrooms but not as nice showers. House and grounds were a bit inaccessible for my elderly family member. There were a lot of notes of instructions everywhere that became a bit of a family joke. They were generally helpful but abundant. And there was a lot of car logistics as we attempted to get cars turned to go up steep drive. Overall it's a splendid old house and grounds which are clearly loved and well used so hence show their age in parts but that suited us and we would return.

• "This is a beautiful 200 year old house with an amazing history, stunning location, spacious accommodation and is well stocked with everything needed for a great extended family stay."

  Our younger guests were particularly excited by the dressing up box contents. Plenty to do, including a full sized billiards table, which can be converted into a huge dining table, although the kitchen table seats 10 comfortably. The steps down to the landing stage are tricky, but negotiable with care, obviously very young children or elderly or infirm folk should use an alternative route. There are plenty of good beaches a short ride away. The driveway is a challenge to reverse into, and not much space to turn cars at the bottom although it is possible. You can park on the road side of the house, off road. It’s quite a job to thoroughly clean a house this size, I thought the important things were done and the odd cobweb is to be expected. Due to the location, built into the side of the hill, a slight odour of damp is present in some places. All the main rooms and bedrooms look outwards into the Menai Strait, so are fine in that regard, and the views towards Snowdonia, Bangor, and the Menai bridge are breathtaking. Overall we were enchanted and delighted with our stay, and thank you to Lucy for prompt responses to my few queries.

• "We were a large family group - 4 elderly adults, 4 younger adults, a toddler, a baby and a dog."

  The house was perfect with plenty of space for all of us. It was extremely well equipped with everything we could possibly need, a real family home. The younger adults loved the kitchen so much that they happily cooked for us so that we only ate out once. (The neighbouring Gazelle was very good.) The two year old loved all the toys and the older members enjoyed just looking at the view even if they couldn't make it down to the jetty. The weather wasn't brilliant and we couldn't make the most of the garden but there was plenty to occupy us all. Our contact Lucy was particularly helpful both before and during the holiday.

• "We all really enjoyed out stay at Tan-Y Coed."

  The views are out of this world and the location generally is great. It would be great if there was an easy way to get to the sea from the house, we couldnt find it if there was one. Also the outside furniture could be more user friendly. That said we were not in the house much as we were down for a wedding. The en suite room was like a honey moon suite as a room, such stunning views from the large and luxurious bed. Thank you. Warmest Jen and family

• "We had a great time at Tan Y Coed, yes it needs some modernisation but the history, character and charm is plain to see."

  Location is great, good for exploring the rest of Anglesey and mainland, 2 miles to menai bridge (walking distance for most) + there is access down to the Menai Strait from the property. The facilities in the house were ideal, comfortable bedrooms, the kitchen had everything we needed for the large group and the snooker table/ping pong table we were great fun for the kids. Owner/host was more than happy to communicate and assist by phone if required. We had a wonderful time partly due to getting decent weather all of the week which meant we could make most of the outdoor facilities when at the property.

• "We returned after staying at this property in 2022."

  We love it! It is so peaceful and the views are stunning. It is a total escape! The owner contacted us prior to going with useful info and it is highly likely that we will book again next year. The master bedroom is huge and sorry to go on about the views but they are something else. The snooker table is great and the lounge with the real fire is brilliant for a family get together or an escape from the family! The kitchen is well kitted out and the wi fi was good. Nice that there are items in the pantry and kitchen in case anything that has been forgotten to bring. The house has a great history and a homely atmosphere. Thank you very much for allowing us to stay in the property.

  A item was left at the property and the cleaner/owner were extremely helpful in finding and sending back to us. Property a little tired and dusty but did not detract from our visit - the property is full of character and great for a large group get together. The dressing up box was a massive hit as was the ability to walk to a local lovely pub via the beach.

• "What an incredible place!"

  Felt like we were in a fairy tale or a historical novel :-) The rooms were immaculate, the views stunning, and the multiple shared areas - living room, drawing room, snooker room, bathrooms and kitchen - were well kitted out. Great facilities, and plenty of well-placed instructions as to how to make the most of our stay. The owner was great at letting us know of any potential issues in advance. It was pretty chilly - even with the heating on and a boost - but that I think goes with the territory of staying in any older building during a cold snap! We were all very impressed and would love to stay here again.

• "Another fantastic week."

  My family adore this property and it’s wonderful cosy atmosphere and grandeur. Lots of space to play, chill or escape ! The kitchen is very well equipped and a great central point for chats and drinks. The two additional rooms off the kitchen are a godsend for storing food and drinks. The property is warm, comfortable and of course those views across the straits !! Amazing. Quick dip in the straits then back in for a snuggle beside the log fire. The friendly helpful owner is always available should any problems arise. Save us a week for next year !!

• "As a family we stayed here over the Christmas period and it was wonderful."

  Super spacious and everything we expected from such a large period property. The drawing room is magnificent and became our focal point for the family to gather with the lovely log burning fire and although lived in, the sofas and armchairs are very comfy. The views across the Menai are breathtaking, we definitely felt like we were staying in one of the most established houses on the Straits. We walked regularly to The Gazelle Pub/Hotel which serves excellent food and has an equally amazing view of the Straits and Snowdonia mountain range. Beaumaris heaves with character and the shops/ boutiques/ restaurants that have opened there over the last few years are really good. Menai Bridge is a 5 minutes drive with a great Waitrose and some super restaurants to eat in- although we would recommend booking at busy times. Happy memories made on this trip, we will definitely return!

• "I regularly spend holiday and family time at this large magical family home in Angelsey."

  Tan y Coed is an historic building with direct access to the Menai straits and incredible views over the water. The vast main living room with huge log fire makes for super cosy afternoons and the master bedroom suite has arguably the best view of the Menai Straits from anywhere. The house is perfect for active families with loads of teenage kids as there are plenty of bedrooms and lots to do on the water and surrounding area. There are heaps of toys as well as the snooker table and lots of games. Perfect for large active families who like to have fun. Some of my most magical lifetime memories were made here.

  Loads to do, querky bits to look at and a big well equipped kitchen to cook and eat in. Easy but steep access to the boathouse and foreshore, (follow the advice sheet and keep an eye on the tide.). The heating works well, the wood fire is fun and the whole place is relaxing. The charm is in the usedness of the whole house, it’s almost straight from a 1940’s detective film. . . Great fun, great few days.

• "We stayed at Tan-y-Coed for a week with two families."

  .. what a spot and what a house. The perfect place for a family get together. So much room for the kids to play and all of the toys, right on the water with a pontoon for swimming, paddle boarding etc, a 5 minute walk from a great family friendly pub, and a stones throw from some incredible (empty) beaches. We felt like we were lords of the manor! The house had everything we needed for big family lunches/ BBQs. I could not think of a better place to catch up with friends and family.... you have to visit, just for the view! We hope to come again soon.

• "Let's start off with the positives."

  The views from the garden over the Menai Straight and Bridge are stunning. If your lucky enough to have a warm sunny day relaxing outside. The house is massive, but only the master bedroom and lounge are a reasonable size, a lot is taken up with a bizarre staircase that a Cludo board would be proud of. However, the garden furniture is falling apart, and the path under the balcony decking needs a machete to get through. As you walk in the front door that you can only half open your greeted with that smell of Eau de Damp, threadbare carpets and furniture in the main lounge, and bizarrely personal photos everywhere of what must be the largest extended family in North Wales from the 70's to the Noughties. Moving back into the spooky hallway with a dressing box, yes I repeat, an (adult) dressing box, a piano with missing keys, a giant painting of 3 girls with the middle ones eyes following you down the corridor, snail or slug trails on the carpet, and an internal wall that is so wet it almost has water running down it when it rains (this is Wales), you realise that whoever had Tan Y Coed as their family holiday home left it 20 years ago and that's when the maintenance and upkeep ended. The billiard room has 7 reds and 16 pinks, but full size and useable if you exchange 6's for 1's. Liberal signs festoon everywhere, with guidence on the do's, don'ts and quirks of the house. There is a wet room with wet suits to use for water sports, but not sure if the paddle board and kayak on the decking are for guest use or not, plus to get to said decking one needs to use Google maps and the front steps by the drive rather than the rear steps to the deepest Congo. You will now get to the smaller rear lounge with the earliest version of Sonys flat screen TV, Sky, and the hardest settee known to man. All seats are, to be blunt, knackered, threadbare, dust ridden, and basically filthy. Cobwebs are everywhere. We now enter the kitchen, brace yourselves. The table that seats 10, 12 at a push, needs a flipping good scrub in fact a deep sanding down and re-varnish, sticky doesn't explain its lack of hygiene, at least your plates won't slip off onto the tiles. Kitchen gadgets are everywhere, but you'd be taking risk to use the bread maker and all electrical devices and lights have PAT testing stickers of which ran out a year ago. You would assume Sykes would be checking up on this. A glance at the main consumer units indicates their next inspection date was due January 2006! The pantry, and its leaking fridge freezer, explained away by another sign saying that "don't be concerned about water on the floor this is a outside pantry" The scullery, has a washing machine, the tumble dryer now works after I cleaned the filters. Here resides the high level cobweb feather dusters which haven't been used since Agragog from Harry Potter and her children moved in. The "Sheila maid" from the ark has been so well used its wooden cross bars are now black, so just hang up anything white for your own stripped t-shirts. The main master suite with its own en-suite bathroom has stunning views of the Menai with warnings on how to open and close the heavy curtains. The 6' bed is, to be fair, comfortable, but what is most disconcerting is the massive wall hanging Bayeux tapestry behind the bed with huge stain in the middle from what must have been a "I can't be bothered to go to the en-suite" moment. The other bedrooms are all dated, with random sinks in the corner, stained and bare carpets throughout, and one bathroom has a Jackson Pollock inspired mold design on the wall. In fact damp mould is to be found all around. However we seem to be the only guest's to feel their £4k for a weeks family holiday, which after the pandemic, has been long looked forward too, was ruined by such a filthy and rundown house. The guest book and other reviews seem to be glowing for some bizarre reason. The £16K a month income the owners and Sykes are getting needs to be reinvested in Tan Y Coed and not the other mansion(s) that are on the hung on the hall walls for us to view.

• "The house is in a stunning location, BUT it is very tired and needs a thorough spring clean, most of the furniture has not been moved and cleaned behind, resulting in dirt and cobwebs building up everywhere from the ceilings to the corners of the rooms, The two highchairs for the children were covered in black mould and dirty, Most of the mugs provided were chipped."

  The bedding, beds and towels were comfortable and of good quality. We enjoyed our stay but were disappointed by the general lack of cleanliness.

• "What a wonderful place."

  We had an amazing time and will endeavour to return as often as possible. You described the property very accurately so it almost seems churlish to highlight any negatives, but, for the record; More bars of soap and more loo rolls doesn't seem too much to ask. One more ensuite or upstairs bathroom would be ideal but I'd settle for the soap and the loo rolls for now. Just slight and mild criticisms in an otherwise overwhelmingly positive experience. • "This was a well stocked house with a really welcoming feel."

  The house could do with a bit of TLC (it was a bit damp in places) but the heating worked really well and very quickly. In any case nothing could detract from the absolutely amazing views. We practically lived on the terrace with its breathtaking views of the Menai Straits. If you want a holiday with perfection and all mod cons, this place probably isn't for you but if (like us) you enjoy something that is a bit quirky and you like beautiful faded elegance then you will really love this place!

Was so lovely to lay out on the sunbeds and soak up the sun - we had amazing weather for September for the full week. Beds were comfortable and everywhere was nice and clean.   It could not have been more perfect for our needs as a group. The house was as described - very comfortable with outstanding views. A real home from home. For those looking for perfection and/or a luxury hotel, look elsewhere. This is a well used, charmingly old fashioned house whose walls I am sure could tell some amazing stories. The house is well stocked with all you could need. Both Menai Bridge and Beaumaris are within a 5 minute drive and have some lovely pubs and restaurants. All very low key and surprisingly excellent. As a party, we all agreed that we would happily come back! Thank you.

  Our entire family group from teenagers to a 75 year old loved it. The location and the views were stunning. The house is very well equipped with everything that you could possibly need. Perfect for relaxing or for being active and taking up all the opportunities that Anglesey has to offer.

  However, there were quite a few ongoing maintenance issues- one shower not working, lightbulbs missing, remnants of previous holiday makers, only one tea towel (to name a few!).... Despite all of this, we appreciated that this house was a shabby chic, lived-in house- we could look past the issues and enjoyed the location of the property and the opportunity to spend time as a family.

  There are one or two shabby bits and dusty corners,flaky paint and loose wallpaper, but on the whole it was great. Lots of comfy chairs and kitchen utensils. Shame that the kenwood mixer was broken and that quite a few of the cooking utensils and mugs needed a wash before we could use them.

• "This was a lovely very large property in a beautiful location , it had an efficient heating system and plentiful supply of hot water all essential to a large multigenerational family group."

  However the kitchen should have been better equipped for a property catering to larger groups with more (and new) crockery and cutlery needed (although there was a plentiful supply of glasses, cooking pots and pans and serving dishes), better organised and less cluttered (every single kitchen drawer was full of useless bits and pieces including old creams, ointments and medication most unsuitable to be left in a property rented to families with young children) and was not terribly clean. Dining in the billiard room (as shown in pictures advertising the property) may be an option for a special occasion if caterers were used but was not really a functional option for everyday dining especially with the equipment provided. We were generally more than happy with the 'shabby chic' style of the property however nearly all of the seating in the large formal living room was uncomfortable with broken springs and webbing making it virtually unuseable. Overall we had a thoroughly enjoyable family christmas at Tan y Coed and the positives outweighed the negatives - however the negatives outlined above were significant although they could be very easily rectified and would improve the rental experience enormously.

• "A brilliant place for a large family gathering."

  Not immaculate, but everything needed for a brilliant weekend get-together. Pity the open fire in the large living room smoked so much that we were forced to entertain ourselves in the kitchen. We hope to return in the summer!
