10 Customer Reviews

  • "Unfortunately we encountered numerous issues during our stay at Ceris Lodge and I have hesitated to write a review to give Sykes and/or the homeowner a chance to respond but we have not even had an apology from either."

The issues I initially had with the en-suite shower room door which locked itself and the upstairs toilet bulb were promptly dealt with by the lovely housekeeper - the bulb was replaced and the shower room door was opened although rendered unusable as the lock completely malfunctioned so the door had to be propped open at all times to avoid anyone getting locked in or out. 1. The lower decked area outside is quite simply dangerous, there are large holes in it where it has rotted away with a 2-3 foot drop underneath - it is completely unsafe. 2. The downstairs area of the property where the bedrooms are located is incredibly damp, most plug sockets have got air fresheners in them in what I imagine is an attempt to mask the musty/damp smell which is actually overwhelming, particularly in the en-suite bedroom. I think the humidity levels are likely well above a safe level to sleep in. 3. The bed in the master bedroom is broken on the right hand side - I fear someone may fall through it before long I could go on as there were other minor problems but I risk sounding ridiculous however these issues did spoil our holiday - I have never felt the need to write a bad review of a property before but other potential holiday makers need to be made aware, this property need serious attention and is not in a fit state stay in currently.

  • "The moment we entered the house we could smell a sour smell."

When we explored downstairs (the bedrooms) the smell was much stronger. Other reviews have mentioned a damp smell but this was something else on top. I knelt on the bedroom floor to use an extension cable that was under the bed and the carpet stank of urine. That bedroom (the one with the shower ensuite) was impossible to sleep in because the smell was so strong it was nauseating. We contacted the housekeeper and explained that we needed two bedrooms but one of us was having to sleep on the two seater sofa in the living room. She phoned us back to say that she had tried to contact the landlord but was not getting a reply. We then emailed and whatsapped Sykes, who did not reply until we were on the journey home after a week, and even then it was just to say that our 'query' had been passed on to the customer relations team. We have stayed in many holiday cottages over the years and have never written a bad review or made a complaint. This house has such potential for being a really amazing place to stay, but it smelt like a cowshed, and opening windows and plugging in the diffusers that are all over the house (showing that the landlord was aware of the smell) didnt help at all. I think the smell was a combination of damp, poor drains (the sinks and toilets all gurgle when you flush) and perhaps an animal had been shut into the lowest bedroom? A much needed holiday was completely spoilt and we only stayed because we had made plans with family and friends in Bangor. Please could the owners 1. Remove the smelly carpet and clean the floorboards before replacing with new, so that nobody else has to have a horrible holiday. 2. Provide us with a refund.

  • "Another pleasant week at Ceris Lodge, welcomed with a nice bottle of wine."

Glad to see the loo seat and tap have been repaired from last time. The property is a bit shabby but is made up for in the views over the Straits which we love. Sadly the weather didn't encourage us to sit outside.

  • "The owners had left a bottle of wine for us which was a nice touch, unfortunately as our stay progressed things went down-hill."

The property was not to the standard expected. On arrival the toilet seat in the en-suite bathroom was not fixed properly, and one of the basin taps was at right angles to the sink, facing the other tap. Excellent response from the housekeeper who had the issues resolved in an hour. The property was very cold, and the downstairs bedroom area was damp. The wall at the bottom of the stairs was wet to the touch, and the en-suite bedroom had an ill-fitting external door which was drafty. The instruction book for the property contained incorrect information. It specified laundry bags to be used, but these were not provided. The instructions on how to use the central heating were incorrect, specifying a hive control which was not connected the the heating system. There was no ability to recycle, as all rubbish had to be placed in the single black bin outside. We actually vacated the property a day early, and would not be happy to recommend it. The place needs some updating, especially to resolve the damp issues, but also to ensure the instructions are correct for future users.

Thank you for your feedback. We value guest reviews to enable us to monitor the quality of our properties. We have taken your maintenance notes on board and rectified these issues. The black bin is supplied by a private waste collection which is depot-sorted to allow ease of use for guests. Thank you for taking the time to bring this feedback to our attention, we hope you continue to choose us in the future. The Menai Team. Property Owner

  • "A very well-equipped and beautifully-located cottage with glorious views of the Menai Strait."

Very conveniently located for many attractions including Plas Newydd, Castell Penryn, Bodnant and Plas Mawr. The en suite bathroom is tiny and the loo seat is broken. Would it take so much to fix it? The cold tap is prone to pouring on to the floor if not held in place. Fortunately there are two more loos and hand basins. The beds were huge and comfortable and we slept very well with no noise from the bridge. The welcome fizz was a nice gesture - thank you. All in all a comfortable stay. We would come again.
