  • "I wouldn’t know where to begin with the story of our holiday stay."

The home was everything it states but if there is a problem the Menai Holiday agency is hopeless. There was a very distressing incident during the holiday. Without going into it fully as this matter will be taken further, but the caretaker called, we were in the back garden, my grandchildren were in the front living room. Apparently they knocked but thought no one was in so they let themselves into the house, where they then banged on the living room door where my grandchildren were. They were petrified and frightened that this stranger was stood there and asking where there parents were, the children starting shouting as the caretaker had blocked the doorway so they were unable to run out, in all the commotion and shouting my son stepped out of the shower ( half undressed ) to open the bathroom door to find the caretaker had then walked down the length of the hallway to the kitchen. She said the owner had asked her to call to check the model of the fridge and staining damage on the worktop. By this time the children are crying with shock and needless to say I had come in from the garden and was in complete shock at the commotion and trauma to the children. I contacted Menai letting agency straight away and ( this was a Monday morning ) I explained what had happened and they said they would contact the owner. 24 hours later there was no contact from them. I had to ring them several times, left on hold for ages, or cut off , I did have a ring back at one point to which they would just reassure me it wouldn’t happen again. They didn’t seem to understand the fact that a complete stranger let themselves in ( thinking we were out, which is even worse ) o our privately rented holiday home. It ruined the holiday for the children, my son took my grandson home on the Tuesday evening as he was to upset he kept talking about it. He just couldn’t understand how someone had let themselves in ( thinking we were out ) Our cars were in the drive and the grandchildren were in the living room. I have sent several emails, with the full distressing story but they have all been ignored. I think it’s disgraceful what happened but it seems the agency and owner think it was ok. I have been inundated for feedback since arriving home. Well if this is the only way to get them to realise the distressing effects on my grandchildren then I have no hesitation in putting this story out there so it won’t happen to others. Appalling Service.

  • "Property is in a great spot and close to loads of things to do, places to eat, beaches."

Views from all angles are stunning and the garden areas are large and useable. Kids really enjoyed playing outside in such a big area. The property itself needs heavy maintenance and investment. We couldn’t use the conservatory at all because of the amount of mould in it (the blinds are covered in it) and there were mouldy areas in both of the bedrooms at the front of the building. Several things were broken including the toaster (we bought our own and left it for the next people), the lock on the bathroom door (stuck open) and the push button on the master bathroom toilet. The front door is not fitted properly and jams every time it is opened or closed (this is more of a minor issue though) There is also an area of serious water ingress in the utility room on the right hand side by the back door to the garden. The brickwork is saturated (when you touch the wall your hand comes away wet) and if I owned the property I would investigate that as a matter of priority before it becomes a structural issue. On rainy days we had to move all our things out of this room due to the water ingress. It did us ok for a short stay, due to the proximity of it to places we wanted to visit during our holiday and the fact we only really returned to go to bed, but I wouldn’t recommend it or entertain staying there again until some investment is made getting it back up to scratch. Properly renovated the place would be an absolute gem.

Dear Mr J, thank you for your comments, I'm glad you enjoyed the large garden and stunning views. It is however a shame that you experienced some issues with the house and it is an even bigger shame that you did not contact the housekeeper or Sykes Cottages during your stay to address these problems instead waiting to leave a negative review and demanding a refund. You also had the opportunity to point these issues out to me when I popped round for 5 minutes to put some things in an outbuilding ready for our stay the next week. Perhaps a good moment to tell me about the numerous issues was when I was handing 2 bottles of complementary wine to you (offered as a gift to offset the terrible inconvenience of watching someone go into an outbuilding) Upon inspecting the blinds in the conservatory we have found some do need cleaning, as they are usually rolled up and reserved for sunny days I fail to see why you would unroll them in the wet weather you experienced and also why this issue would make the room unusable. There was no mould in the bedrooms, the best we could find was a skirting board that needed vacuuming. We have advised the housekeeper to pay closer attention to this in the future. The 4 slice toaster was fully functional before you arrived and I find it odd that you would feel obligated to replace it when a simple phone call to our excellent housekeeper could have resolved this issue in a way that did not necessitate you purchasing and then burdening us with the cheapest 2 slice toaster available from Tesco. The lock on the bathroom door was also fully functional before your arrival, upon closer inspection I found that it was not broken but had been dismantled and reassembled incorrectly it has now been fixed. The front door was indeed fitted correctly many years ago but unfortunately the extreme weather which can be experienced on Anglesey has taken its toll on the door latch and it needs to be shut forcefully. We are looking into getting this repaired or replaced. The small lean to at the back of the house where coats can be hung can become cold as it is of single skin masonry and upvc construction. To suggest it was necessary to remove everything from this room is extreme, we arrived the next week had similarly very wet weather and used this area for our coats and wetsuits 100% of the time. • "The property is well positioned and sits in a lovely area of Trearddur."

It's a bit tired looking though, so while the bathrooms, bedding etc were clean, it appears a bit dirty overall. Things like skirting boards and window frames were dirty. The kitchen is well appointed. The toaster does work properly. The TV in the conservatory didn't work and the furniture in the conservatorywas all over the place so not inviting. Loved the massive sofa!

Dear Mrs G, thank you for your comments. We discovered the television aerial lead needed attention and also a re-tune. In the future if you do have any issues like this or with the cleanliness of the property please call the housekeeper and she will be happy to put things right as soon as possible. With regards to the furniture in the conservatory, we do offer this space as a multi use room for relaxing, working, gaming etc this does mean things frequently get moved around. I will remind the housekeeper to reset the furniture after each letting. We have noticed some carpets are becoming tired so we are planning new floor coverings in the hall, sitting room and some bedrooms hopefully to be completed in October 2023. I'm glad you enjoyed the massive sofa! Property Owner

  • "This was one of the best holiday cottages that we have rented - beautifully situated at the end of a quiet lane, very spacious, light & airy, & well equipped."

It was a very pleasant surprise to find that house towels were provided as the Sykes listing said that we needed to bring our own which, for 6 adults & 2 children, took up a lot of space when also bringing beach towels ( hence the lower rating for accuracy of the listing) - please amend your literature. Clear instructions on how to recycle waste would also be useful. Our grandchildren loved playing in the garden & thought that the rabbits were delightful. Very convenient for our family who came over on the ferry from Ireland - we definitely hope to return!

Dear Mr F, thank you for bringing to our attention the towel issue, I think this was caused by the Covid instructions which stopped us from issuing any towels at all. We have instructed Sykes Cottages to change the listing. With regards to the recycling all the rubbish at Moorside goes into the red bin and recycling is sorted at the depot. We have added a notice to this effect. I'm glad that you and your grandchildren enjoyed the house and garden, we also love watching the rabbits. Property Owner

  • "Unfortunately we were plagued by ants during the stay, they were all around the kitchen area, on worktops and the table."

To be fair,I rang Carole and she came & put some ant powder down within the hour, but it made no difference. Also, when stripping the double bed in the front bedroom, I could not believe the state of the duvet. It was so stained and old, it made me feel ill and I had to wash my hands straight away. I would not let a dog lie on it, it was disgusting. Unfortunately, I am struggling to send a video/photos of this, but I did speak to Carole again. I would like to know the owners comments please.

Dear Mrs C, I must apologise for the issue with the ants, I think it has occurred because of hotter summers we experienced lately in Trearddur, we have now found the nest and eradicated the problem thank you for bringing it to our attention. With regards to the bedding issue we asked the house keeper to find the duvet in question and she did find a one which I would describe as having a tea stain on it. We have now replaced it and asked the housekeeper to make a closer inspection of all the bedding in future. Property Owner

  • "Good position, poor signage, gate -- house name -- obliterated."

Very comfortable. Sadly lacking information regarding central heating (outside temperature 10 - 12 *) and the induction top hob. Had to call out the caretaker. Nowhere to hang anything in the bathroom. Shower base very slippery, no rubber bath mat. No extra waste disposal bags. No leaflets or local information. TV and WI-FI very good.. We did however enjoy our stay on Anglesey.

Dear Mrs L Thank you for staying at Moorside, I am very happy to hear that you found Moorside comfortable and enjoyed its great position. Thank you for your comment about the house sign, we have now changed to a slate one which hopefully will brave the Welsh elements! The central heating works via a digital thermostat in the hall and the temperature can be adjusted using the plus and minus buttons. The instructions for the hob can be found in the kitchen drawer next to the cutlery. There are hooks in the main bathroom and I find the towel rail in the en-suite is useful to hang things on. With regards to the shower we have never found it to be slippery, it is a standard white shower base. However in the future we will be happy to provide a rubber mat for those who wish to use one. There were some local information leaflets at Moorside but unfortunately we were instructed to remove them because of the possible COVID risk. We will be replacing them now the situation has improved. Thank you for all the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay on Anglesey. Property Owner
