  • "Unfortunately my wife was taken ill the day before the departure date so we had to leave early."

But I do think the departure time of 9 o'clock is far to early and needs to be reviewed, it detracts from a lovely stay.

The book mentioned the shower had a drip but it is far worse than this, the shower continues for about five minutes once shut off. We were left with only one set of towels, i messaged Skyes and they said some would be delivered Thursday but these never appeared. We were also only left with one and half toilet rolls. We were told the garden was secure which it was but the gate is not suitable if you have a small dog. We tried our best to get the sky working but was unsuccessful even though we are quite tech savvy. The wifi details in the welcome pack don't work, you need to use the details on the back of the bt box. Also the instructions for the fireplace in the welcome pack don't appear to match the log burner in the property. I tried calling Skyes before our holiday as i had a few questions but after being on hold for about five minutes i finally got through to someone who was only interested in making sure i had made payments, i was put on hold again and after twenty minutes finally gave up.

Definitely 5 stars for this cottage and its location.

  • "We enjoyed our stay, the location is great for a quiet peaceful break."

Some mention in reviews of nocturnal noises, it's not mice but twigs from trees too close to the windows. I'd definitely recommend investing in a decent mattress and new chair and sofa. Not only do the existing ones look shabby, they are rather uncomfortable. The main picture in the listing is not Cabbage Patch but part of the neighbouring property. I mention this because it gives the impression of lots of light in the apartment. This is so for the lounge but there is very little natural light in the bedroom. Great if you like a pitch black bedroom but if you're claustrophobic like me and a light sleeper it's a bit of a problem. On the plus side, it was immaculately clean, full of character and the secure garden was an added bonus.

  • "Wonderful small cottage, perfect for a break for a few days."

The coast path is almost on your doorstep, along with a lovely quiet beach, and a really nice pub (the food in the pub is quite expensive though). The open fire is a nice addition - very cosy, and easy to maintain. We read a reviewer mention mice - there are none - it's the sound of pipes expanding and contracting in the roof. Would recommend to anybody looking to get away for a few days :)

  • "Very disappointing."

The property is in a fantastic location with breathtaking views and the kitchen area and bathroom were clean, but the property desperately needs some attention and care. Lots of dust and cobwebs and general wear & tear/tired etc. We could have got over all this, however, the WORST thing for us though were the mice! They kept us awake all night in the bedroom roof space. It was so loud and very off putting, to the point we left a day early. Despite 2 nights of literally no sleep! Apparently the pest controller found no evidence of rodents inside or outside the property. We can assure you there is definitely a significant issue in the roof space, so only book here if that won’t bother you. For me though, the property shouldn’t be rented out to paying guests with issues like this and they should listen to customer feedback, not dismiss it as unimportant or lies! I completely understand the property is old and in the countryside and there will be mouse issues at times, but this should be dealt with to avoid customer complaints. Also strange they claim there’s no mouse issue but the property has ultrasonic vermin repellers plugged in both rooms (which I know from experience don’t work effectively anyway!) I definitely wouldn’t book again now due to the way our complaint was handled.

Thank you for sharing your feedback following your recent stay at the Cabbage Patch. We appreciate your acknowledgement of the cleanliness of the kitchen and bathroom along with the location and views. Rest assured we take all comments seriously and aim to support guests pre, during and post stay if any concerns arise. All guest feedback serves as a valuable tool when ensuring property standards are at a high and guests have the best experience when away. We encourage guests to raise any concerns during their stay which allows ourselves or the owner to react and resolve the matter accordingly. Unfortunately, we couldn’t react to the matter due to no contact during your stay and the issues were not raised when we contacted you following your first night at the property. We also encourage guests to submit evidence when issues arise such as images and videos so we can really investigate the issue. This is very unusual for this property as it has never been mentioned previous which made the matter even more important to investigate. Following you raising the feedback after your stay we instructed an experienced pest control supplier who carried out an inspection. Following the thorough inspection, we consider no further action to be taken as there was no evidence of mice being present. We will of course continue to monitor customer feedback in line with our processes as this is always at the forefront of our minds. It is important to stress that due to the property location it is not unusual for properties to have these in as a safety net in case such matters arise. Also, it is pre-empting and reducing the risk of this happening in the future. The Menai Team Property Owner

Also since the letting has been taken over by Menai it all feels a bit bossy and impersonal - having to be out by 9.00 a.m. on the morning of departure rather early - most places it's 10.00 and didn't welcome an email, towards the end of our stay detailing how we should clean up - we'd already read all that in the instructions to visitors.

The only thing I have to say that is negative is that it was such a shame that the beautiful arched windows in the bedroom were boarded up, which made the bedroom very very dark. I assume it is for privacy, but blinds or net curtains could be used. The cottage had incredible views to the sea - we could sit on a morning with a cup of tea outside and look across the beach. The only constructive feedback we’d give would be the check in and out times, 6pm and 9am, whilst we did ask to check in earlier and the owners kindly agreed, we think these should be altered to match other properties and allow people to have more of a full weekend. There were only 2 saucepans the size of my hand to cook a Christmas dinner, and for some reason 3 frying pans and 3 sieves. There was a box with cling film and tin foil under the sink as there was on the previous 3 Christmas's we have stayed at your cottages, however on Christmas day when we went to use the foil, there was approximately 3" of foil NOT enough to cover my joint. When I went to cut my Xmas vegetables with "ALL 5 KNIVES " in the knife block there wasn't 1 which was useable, my veg were either crushed or shredded. The dust on top of the plug sockets behind the bedside tables is thick as it is against the skirting behind the bedside tables. The tops of the bedside tables are both damaged, the lampshade on the lamp nearest to the bathroom is broken and has spikes sticking out of the top of the shade. The seating in the livingroom was uncomfortable last year and is even more uncomfortable this year. There was a smell in the bathroom when we arrived which seemed to linger for the week we were there. Although we have spent the last 3 Christmases at this cottage I feel that this will be our last, I don't like change and once I find somewhere nice I will keep returning, however if standards slip then I'm afraid I will find somewhere that I'm happy with and with high standards.

What I liked: Well maintained - and clear that owners listen to feedback as ‘grips’ from other guests have been dealt with (e.g. there is now a large frying pan - something that was missing for a previous reviewer). Exceptional clean. Well equipped - liked that basics such as kitchen foil, dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid were provided - and welcome tray was very much appreciated. High quality bedding and towels. Views of the bay and mountains in the distance from the large window. Good WiFi and excellent picture on small TV (with basic Sky package) - both a nice touch. Enough space to be more than comfortable, even in the bedroom which was bigger than it looked in the pictures. Secure garden ensuring that our dog could not get out (really important given the number of rabbits and new born lambs immediately outside the property). Fantastic walks / runs on your doorstep (two days we didn’t even use the car). Really nice dog friendly pub five minutes walk away. Super nice locals, including the local farmer who we had a chat with each time we saw him. What I didn’t like: Nothing really - no wardrobe or hangers (although we didn’t really need them and anyway, there wasn’t space for a wardrobe) and the kitchen could do with a garlic press, but that’s about all.

  • "Our sixth visit to the Cabbage patch - our favourite place to unwind and enjoy superb coastal scenery and a great pub."

  • "Really cosy and warm when we turned up which was a lovely touch to the beginning of our trip."

Nice and clean rooms and cakes, tea and coffee provided on the table on arrival. Lovely touches make all the difference. Beautiful surroundings and close to the town centre if needed, situated opposite a beach a 10 minute walk away. The holiday was perfect and the pup loved it also! The only thing I would comment on is the cupboard in the bedroom is I think next to the neighbours kitchen and dining area, meaning I could hear everything happening. It didn't affect my holiday at all, just a thought for future people staying. Thanks so much :)

  • "Lovely location however cottage quite scruffy and in need of some attention."

Dirty scratched pans, flaking paint, dirty windows, messy garden with shrubs blocking what could be a potentially fantastic view. Garden furniture to be ashamed of. on the good side the shower was lovely and the quality of bedding and towels made the stay very comfortable.

  • "In need of end of season deep clean and paint work flaking off in bedroom and bathroom."

A great location but a bit of t l c new shower holders and sink drainers and local maps would help .

About the location

RHOSCOLYN

Valley 2 miles; Trearddur Bay 3 miles; Holyhead 5 miles.

Located on Holy Island, three miles from Trearddur Bay, Rhoscolyn is a small village with a church and primary school and is the most southerly place on Holy Island. Rhoscolyn also offers an excellent pub on the lane down to the beach, which is renowned for its gastro food, and the beach itself with its slipway, ideal for small dinghies and power boats, is a popular family destination throughout the summer owing to the sheltered cove and gently sloping sands. Also excellent cliff-top walks can be enjoyed and an abundance of wildlife can be seen, often including seals on the headland. Just two miles away is the village of Valley, which has a Post Office, chemist, shops and eating places, plus the nearby resort of Trearddur Bay is situated on the western shore of the island and is truly beautiful with a great sweep of low grassy coastline indented with rocky coves and fine Blue Flag sandy beaches. There are shops, pubs and restaurants in Trearddur Bay itself and nearby Holyhead offers a wider range of amenities, including a very good leisure centre, supermarkets, harbour front, a marina, the world’s second longest breakwater and exciting day trips to Dublin on the ferry. Watersports, bathing, sailing, windsurfing and horse riding are the main activities in the summer months, plus golfers will enjoy the excellent Holyhead 18 hole links golf course, and the area is also a great place for nature lovers with renowned birdwatching at the South Stack Lighthouse RSPB Reserve. An excellent location with plenty to see and do!
