  • "After many, many years of happy and enjoyable visits to holiday properties in Anglesey, this break left us both Disappointed and Concerned – On arrival, we were greeted with a thoughtful pack of scones (nice) – and a vase of dead flowers - which may have been an indication of things to come!"

One of the selling points of this property, especially at this time of year, is the open fire, however, after is proved somewhat smokey in use (when was the chimney last cleaned?) our thoughts went to the smoke alarms and we found to our deep concern that the upstairs alarm had been removed (and the lounge has a beamed double height ceiling with open wooden stairs to the upstairs bedroom) and the downstairs alarm stated – ‘replace unit by Jul 2013’ and would not even test!! Frankly this is a genuine safety issue and potentially dangerous which we registered at the time with the agent, but as we received no concerned call-back or visit to address this safety issue meant we felt we could not risk using the fire anymore. Especially, given that whilst it had a child guard it did not have a spark guard for safety either at the end of the evening. Regarding the gas hob, after cleaning the dirty burners thoroughly we finally managed to get an even small flame on the smaller three, but they were not variable, and the large ring has an uneven flame which flares to one side – this hob needs replacing, along with the oven which only works on full and we had to regularly test the heat of the ‘only meal’ we ended up risking cooking for the whole week. The dryer (although an unusual but appreciated bonus item) was also on its last legs and sounded like a cement mixer in action (probably the bearings are wearing out)? Whilst the property offers peaceful seclusion, the bedrooms are nice and there is plentiful hot water, however, some of the décor lets it down (curtains hanging off, bathroom blind broken, bedside lampshade broken, dirty rug in the lounge and a good clean throughout required) and some TLC would be suggested. Finally, the note about ensuring the gate was securely closed to stop the cows getting in was almost funny when the sliding gate latch/rusty pipe holder itself is hanging on by a thread!! J & L

  • "This is our 4th annual visit, the peace and quiet and surroundings keep us coming back."

The living room is feeling worn down and although its a dog friendly accommodation the rug is marked and dirty, Bedding is always immaculate but somethings have let it down this year, there were curtains hanging off and unable to close properly and a broken blind in the downstairs toilet, things are feeling old and worn. The kitchen we have always struggled as to cook for 5 of us is a task with the slow oven. When we arrived I did a walk around of the garden just to make sure it was safe for my toddler to let loose and I had to pick up 6 dog messes that I presume had been left by previous holiday makers. Now I know that lies with tenants but it was really disheartening starting my holiday cleaning up after them. Gate is difficult to open and close and the latch is so stiff and one of my dogs escaped underneath due to a hole in the netting. I just feel it needs some TLC and updates.

  • "Very clean and tidy."

Lots of pots, pans and cutlery. Short of space to store ambient temperature food stuffs (bread, crackers, crisps, drinks, breakfast cereal.) Shower a bit rickety but worked perfectly well. Slightly odd not to have frosted glass in the downstairs bathroom window but cottage is isolated so not really a problem.

  • "Lovely cottage - nice and quiet and not overlooked by anyone else."

Great secure garden for the dogs to run round in. Nice and peaceful while being easy to get to beaches and sites across Anglesey. Also very friendly and helpful housekeeper who came out to re-tune the tv for us on a Saturday evening!

  • "Wonderful welcoming property ."

Just what we needed after the hectic run up to our daughter’s wedding the day before. Quiet, secluded, comfortable and the ideal layout for our family, loved the privacy of the upstairs. AND the outside tap so handy when the dogs found the reed bog! Will definitely stay again.

So glad you had a great stay we look forward to welcoming you back soon. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is as warm and well equipped as we remembered from our previous visit, and we enjoyed staying there."

It would be extremely useful if there were details of the wifi code left in a prominent position. We did not use the upstairs of the cottage and that is where the box was placed, in an unobvious position. Visitors should be advised to bring their own devices to watch tv on as BBC channels, ITV1 and C4 were unavailable. And although it’s not crucial, we booked the cottage in the belief that we would be able to relax in front of the tv at night. Finally there are no details on recycling. We did find somewhere to take ours during the course of the week but had no time on the morning of departure as we had to vacate by 9am.

Thank you for the feed back, we are new owners of the cottage so are making sure it is constantly upgraded to ensure everyone has a great stay. I have asked the agent to update the listing to specifically let guests know the WIFI is upstairs. Additionally, I have now replaced the TV equipment so you can receive all channels. I do hope you will come again and I am glad you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "Very enjoyable stay at the property, ideally located."

Clean & tidy. Everything was as expected. Was a little worried regarding the reviews and the track leading to the property, but this had all been resurfaced and was fine. Only downside is, departure at 9am. With a child, this was just impossible. We cut our stay and came home a day earlier to save the stress in the morning. Cleaner popped in to say hello, and ensure everything was ok which was nice. Near an RAF base, so noise was expected….. but the sight of the planes going over was incredible! Was very much enjoyed by us all, fascinating to see…. & daughter loved it! ‘noisy planes!’ Insisted on sitting outside every morning to watch!

  • "We stayed here last October and decided, with a few reservations to return."

The track to the cottage has if anything got worse since 2022. There is one section where the car actually drags on the central area between the two tracks. This scraping noise was quite alarming when we first encountered it. On entering the cottage the first thing we discovered was the light in the entrance hall wasn't working. As this area has no windows this was a bit of an inconvenience and must have been obvious to the person who had only earlier that day cleaned the cottage. Overall, the cottage is looking tired. We are looking to return to Anglesey again in 2024 but we'll avoid Sykes as we get the impression they don't check their listing.

Thanks for the feedback. Since we took over the cottage in September we have had the track completely resurfaced so it is now easily accessible to all vehicles. We are also undertaking a program of updating all appliances and décor. I do hope you will come back soon to see the progress. Property Owner

  • "Lovely property in a beautiful location, couple of down points old food left in microwave probably meant cleaning hadn't been done properly and we had to spend 1st morning unblocking en suite shower, so again no simple checks pre letting carried out."

More local information would be helpful, but none of this detracted from our stay and we would return.

I am so pleased you loved Rhyd Y Bont Bach and got the opportunity to enjoy such a special location. I hope you will come back soon and thank you for the feedback. I have asked the housekeeping team to triple check the points you have raised. I will make sure some more details of local attractions are made available. Property Owner

About the location

RHOSCOLYN

Valley 2 miles; Trearddur Bay 3 miles; Holyhead 5 miles.

Located on Holy Island, three miles from Trearddur Bay, Rhoscolyn is a small village with a church and primary school and is the most southerly place on Holy Island. Rhoscolyn also offers an excellent pub on the lane down to the beach, which is renowned for its gastro food, and the beach itself with its slipway, ideal for small dinghies and power boats, is a popular family destination throughout the summer owing to the sheltered cove and gently sloping sands. Also excellent cliff-top walks can be enjoyed and an abundance of wildlife can be seen, often including seals on the headland. Just two miles away is the village of Valley, which has a Post Office, chemist, shops and eating places, plus the nearby resort of Trearddur Bay is situated on the western shore of the island and is truly beautiful with a great sweep of low grassy coastline indented with rocky coves and fine Blue Flag sandy beaches. There are shops, pubs and restaurants in Trearddur Bay itself and nearby Holyhead offers a wider range of amenities, including a very good leisure centre, supermarkets, harbour front, a marina, the world’s second longest breakwater and exciting day trips to Dublin on the ferry. Watersports, bathing, sailing, windsurfing and horse riding are the main activities in the summer months, plus golfers will enjoy the excellent Holyhead 18 hole links golf course, and the area is also a great place for nature lovers with renowned birdwatching at the South Stack Lighthouse RSPB Reserve. An excellent location with plenty to see and do!
