Also red squirrels and hare. Lovely welcome pack , bottle of wine , biscuits, caramel logs. Wood fire for when cold, or in our case wet. Lots of little things like loo roll and bin liners meant you did not feel had to buy lots of bits on arrival .mother in law fell in love with Pal the pony… if there had been space in the car she would have smuggled him in. Fantastic, thanks Nigel and Lindsay.

Comfortable cottage with great facilities for self catering. Everything we needed as a family for our short trip. Children loved the horses and the wildlife spotting. Hosts were brilliant, and nothing was too much trouble. Some minor decoration and maintenance needed in some areas of the cottage but would definitely go back.

We will definitely be returning as soon as we can! We didn’t actually want to leave! From being in 13+ airbnbs this is the best place to be! We were able to feed horses carrots, it was so quiet and private and the walk near by (rob roys grave) was amazing! (A walk that’s in walking distance from the place) Nigel was the best host and was so incredibly kind. We have encountered some really nasty hosts and it was just such a breath of fresh air! Thank you Nigel and family for making it so comfortable for us. Also the welcome pack and cleanliness was top notch!

Set in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park the village lies at the head of Loch Voil.

Rob Roy MacGregor, a 17th-century Scottish outlaw, has a close association with the glen and his grave can be found in the grounds of the small local church.

Inside the church, which is open to visitors, you can learn about the history of the area.

The village has connections back to the stone age, with a number of pre-historic sites that can still be seen, including, cup stones and the Puidrac Stone.

Balquhidder is popular with hikers and walkers, with the Rob Roy way running through the village and trails up through the forest to Kirkton Glen and Creag an Tuirc, where you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the glen and its lochs.

For the more energetic the Munros of Ben More and Stob Binnein lie at the end of the glen.

To the west of the village, you will find Loch Voil, an 8km freshwater loch which you can explore by canoe, kayak, or paddle board all available to rent locally.

Small fishing boats can also be sourced for use on the loch.

The area is ideal for cycling on the quiet roads or lanes, with the number seven cycle route close by offering safe predominantly off-road cycling.

Mountain bikes, road bikes and e-bikes can all be hired locally.

A long winding single track road hugs the north shore of the loch for 6-miles to the remote location of Inverlochlarig.

ideal for walking, cycling or a short car journey taking in the splendour of the glen.

About the location

CALLANDER

Stirling 14 miles, Loch Lomond 30 miles, Perth 37 miles.

The popular tourist town of Callander, in the Stirling region of Scotland, sits on the River Teith and is known as the Gateway to the Highlands. Located on the edge of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, and surrounded by beautiful scenery, Callander has been a favourite stopping point for tourists on their way to the Highlands for over 150 years. There is evidence of a settlement here reaching as far back as the Neolithic period, and to demonstrate this, a little way east of the town is Scotland’s largest chambered cairn, along with several Iron Age forts to the west. A disciple of Columba of Iona, Saint Kessog preached in this area in the 6th century and there is a knoll, Tom na Chessaig or Hill of Kessog, named in his honour, set near the River Teith. The town today is brimming with shops, bars, restaurants, cafes and supermarkets, providing plenty of amenities. There are many walks and cycle paths around the town as well as the many lochs and hills of the nearby National Park. Callander is within easy reach of Stirling and Perth, and even Glasgow and Edinburgh can be found for a pleasant day trip either by car or train from Stirling.
