  • "Lovely comfortable cottage in a super location."

Very clean and tidy. Oven not quite as clean inside as mine at home. Kitchen contained everything we needed, thank you. Bathroom very clean despite rather elderly grouting in some places. Good range of books and games. Very comfortable beds and super-clean bedding, thank you, that's so important. Information about appliances very clear, thank you. Everything worked well. Nice garden if a bit overgrown - unfortunately it was too wet for us to sit out! Kirkcudbright information very comprehensive, ditto the walks etc - we did a couple of them, thank you. We were grateful for the tea, coffee, sugar etc that was there when we arrived - and the wine was a lovely touch.

The house was especially well equipped and had two places to sit and eat outside to catch the sun lunchtime and in the evening. We appreciated the wine, milk and biscuits.

  • "This is a lovely house and garden, and we very much enjoyed its homely feel."

The owner had provided most generously the sorts of things that you often have to go out and buy if you didn’t think to bring - like a non slip bath mat, kitchen roll, tin foil, salt. There was milk in the fridge for a cup of tea after the journey, and biscuits to go with it. We even had wind up torches beside each bed in case of power outages. We would love to return some time.

  • "A lovely cottage!"

Three large bedrooms, with comfy beds and plenty of towels, loo roll, kitchen equipment etc. The hosts were friendly and welcoming (they popped round to take the bin out in case we were too frail!) and had very kindly supplied things like tomato ketchup, tea and coffee as well a basic cooking materials. The only minor negatives were that the rooms were quite light so we tended to wake up quite early (maybe not a bad thing?) and the shower would be a bit cramped if you were 6 foot tall. The garden is well maintained and is a bit of a sun trap. Overall we were very happy with the property. It's very convenient for shops, art galleries, museums and walks and of course Kirkcudbright is an excellent base for exploring Dumfries and Galloway. Red Kite feeding and Wigtown bookshops are especially recommended!

  • "This is the second time I have visited Kirkcudbright and myself and my friend could not praise the cottage enough."

It's a wonderful base to visit all that Dumfries and Galloway has to offer. This part of Scotland is so overlooked and it has so much to see but in a quiet and understated way. We love the cottage so much, it has always been immaculately clean, lovely cosy beds with everything you could possibly need for your holiday. We even loved the nesting pigeon in the back garden- though we were disappointed not to see the babies before we returned home. We can't wait to hopefully return again next year.

Everything we needed was available and it was nice to have the lovely garden. The supplies provided including milk, biscuits and wine saved a shopping trip on arrival which was very welcome. We had a really relaxing week and hope to return.

  • "The cottage was warm and spacious with comfy beds, the kitchen is OK but the fridge/freezer and microwave are in a small outer lobby with no heating, also the bathroom needs some work, the shower is difficult to access as its tucked under the stairs, the tiling needs regrouting and the bathroom needs a general makeover."

All the house has the original sash windows which were drafty. We had to double up the quilt in the main bedroom as it was cold at night. The small upstairs toilet is unusable at night unless you want to wake the whole house up as it’s a noisy macerator type! The wood burning stove is a nice addition for the cold winter nights. The house is in a good location for accessing all the surrounding area. We enjoyed for the milk, wine and biscuits left for use by the owners!

  • "We liked the cottage very much & hope to stay again!"

Very comfortable, spacious and very homely. It's not the most up to date in terms of decor, but we prize comfort and a cosy feel over that. Location is very handy for the town centre, so gallery, pub, eateries & lovely places to wander all nearby, yet quiet & pleasant. Parking was not a problem all week. We had a query and the owner, despite being away on his own holiday, pulled out all the stops to help & all was well. Slightest of caveats in that the property info on the Sykes site mentions the gas fire in the dining area & wood burning stove in the kitchen, neither of which were functioning, hence the slightly lower mark for facilities, but the gas fire is to be back soon apparently and we weren't cold. The dining area is a really pleasant, sunny room in the morning. The garden needs a good pruning, but it was too wet to use during our stay anyway! Have to go back to finish the books we borrowed off the shelf...

Loved the wine left for us thank you. Lots of information on places to visit. Only slight issue is the low ceiling in the shower, we were aware of this but it was awkward for a couple in our party. The provision of hand rails was very useful. Although we did little cooking, preferred to eat out, I think that the frying pans should be replaced. Loved the garden and we were able to enjoy some sunshine.

  • "The holiday cottage was particularly dirty."

However, when I fed this back to Sykes they were very helpful in addressing the matter. They fed back our concerns to the owner who came to visit us at the property so we could show him what we were concerned about. Thank you Sykes for acting on our behalf.

I take very strong exception to the comment that the property was "particularly dirty". During the four years I have let the cottage I have never had any complaints of this nature, direct or via Sykes , about lack of cleanliness or anything else. The cottage was cleaned to the same very good standard for the week in question. I visited the house to hear what the guest had to say. The issues she raised were trivial. For example she was unhappy about one of the oven gloves ; she stated that the fridge should be cleaned with bicarbonate of soda, and not another cleaning liquid. ( It is, in fact, cleaned with bicarbonate of soda.) She then turned the conversation to money. It was, all in all, a very odd experience. I have since discovered from the local holiday let "community" that this lady is a serial complainant - complaints made with the intention of trying to get money back from owners or letting agents, evidently successfully in some cases. She has been banned by one letting agency for this behaviour. I have brought this to the attention of Sykes for their future reference. Property Owner

We enjoyed our stay very much in this back street of Kirkcudbright. We would happily stay there again. We didn't use the back garden but it was a secluded space with seats and table available. The downstairs bathroom was fine - a toilet was also upstairs, should a night -time visit been necessary. The town's health centre was opposite the house and the only issue about this was a bit more traffic and cars parking during the day. However we were mostly able to park directly outside the house, or move the car there in the evening. We were able to air the house by opening windows in the bathroom and kitchen. I would have liked to have been able to open windows elsewhere in the house but this didn't seem possible.

The only negative comment (and we struggled to find something) was that the shower facilities are not good enough. We were exceptionally lucky with the weather and enjoyed beautiful summer evening strolls around the lovely town and along the river. There are plenty of walks to do from Kirkcudbright itself and in the surrounding area. We were very grateful to Paul our host who not only made us feel exceptionally welcome but also as provided us with loads of information from walks in the area to places to eat. He was very friendly, kind and couldn't do enough to help. The town is full of great art and beautiful crafts. We found everyone really friendly. The cottage is spacious, cosy and very well equipped. The most comfortable beds we have ever slept on! A great location in Kirkcudbright, handy for all facilities and super walks, beaches and coastline close by. Others have mentioned the parking but we had no issues, only had to park away from the house once during the week and it was only a 50 metre walk. We were blessed with glorious weather so did not need the heating but the house would be very cosy in winter with the woodburner. The garden is delightful and a lovely place to sit in the evening. The shower is tight for space but hubby is 6ft2" and managed! Water pressure is good and water is nice and hot. We look forward to returning to this lovely cottage and exploring the area further. The local authority need to sort out their recycling efforts, glass bottles can be taken to bottle banks at the harbour. I only mention this as if visitors raise it local residents can use the information.

About the location

KIRKCUDBRIGHT

Dumfries 25 miles.

The historic and picturesque town of Kirkcudbright sits on the banks of the River Dee on the north Solway coast. Established as a Royal Burgh in 1455 this small port town has always been supported by a busy fishing trade and is home to a blue flag marina. Behind this working harbour, its wide streets and pastel-coloured houses, a mix of Georgian and Victorian town houses make for a very attractive town centre. Particular places of interest are the Tolbooth Museum, Broughton House and Gardens (National Trust for Scotland), the Stewartry Museum, MacLellan's Castle, and the newly refurbished town Art Gallery. Kirkcudbright is also known as the 'Artists' Town'. From the 1870s onwards the town has both produced and attracted a wide range of talented artists and crafts people, and there is a fine collection of art galleries and arts and crafts shops. If you want your holiday to include some breaks from cooking you will find plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from, including the historic Selkirk Arms Hotel, and, near the harbour, Polar Bites, a very good fish restaurant as well as being a takeaway. Throughout the summer the town organises a wide range of activities including the four day Arts and Crafts Trail, four-day Jazz Festival, a weekly Scottish night with pipe band and dancing (especially for children), weekly town tours, farmers markets, a vintage car rally... the list is endless. Visitors can also use the town's swimming pool, bowling club, golf club and tennis courts. Further afield there is the Galloway Activity Centre on beautiful Loch Ken, which offers a range of water sports, or perhaps best of all are the opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing, or just driving along the coasts and in the hills and valleys in some of Scotland's loveliest unspoilt scenery.
