  • "We had a lovely cosy 4 night stay at Greystones for a relaxed and quiet Christmas."

The cottage was very comfortable with everything we needed. We loved the woodburning stove and there was plenty of wood to keep us toasty warm. Waking up to the sound of crashing waves was wonderful and having our morning coffee whilst looking out to sea was very relaxing. .....'What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to 'sit' and stare'! Despite the storm we still managed to get out to the Mull of Galloway lighthouse (as you'd recommended) where we enjoyed a lovely walk with great views (without getting wet). Thank you for our stay in your lovely cottage.

  • "This is the most homely holiday rental I have ever stayed in."

This charming character property had everything we needed on a practical level; everything in the cottage was both thoughtfully and tastefully appointed. We didn’t use the garden much but it was well kept, the lawn mowed mid week, and there were chairs and a table for use if needed. The bedding and soft furnishings were lovely and the overall impression is of a well loved, well used and well cared for cottage. I very much hope we have the opportunity to stay at Greystones again in the future.

Thank you so much for this lovely review, it is much appreciated! When we furnished and equipped it, we were hoping for a "home from home" feel to the house (definitely not minimalist!) and finding the right bits of decor gave me a lot of pleasure, so great to hear you loved it! The upper part of the garden is still a work in progress but you do get lovely views from the bench at the top. The weather is often warm and sunny in May and June, so it's a good time to visit, which I hope you will do again! With best wishes, Vivienne Property Owner

It is comfortable and the views from the front room and upstairs bedroom are amazing. During our week we saw beautiful sunsets, experienced a storm and, explored the area. The house was clean, well equipped and warm. The log burner was a bonus with heat from it permeating throughout the house. The local residents were very friendly and ready to chat.

Thank you for this great review! The sunsets can be amazing all year round and being so close to the water at high tide a storm can be pretty unforgettable too! I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay at Greystones and hope to see you back again sometime. Best wishes, Vivienne. Property Owner

  • "Quaint and quirky has the Port William old school charm."

But too many downsides to this property compared to others in village. Kitchen cluttered and no room for any food or worktop space. Living room fine for 2 or 3 people but no seating for any more as layout again cramped and cluttered. Bedrooms good but did not even unpack as very little storage. Biggest issue is living area is infested with fleas or other biting insects as all left with dozens of bites after stay. No pets allowed so hard to understand! Note left on arrival indicating kitchen drains blocked and use Mr Muscle to unblock if required! A simple cleaning out of plug filter sorted that! Perhaps overall poor cleaning regime? Cleaners at door 10am sharp ushering us out. Not a very inviting or hospitable stay.

Thank you for your review. I was disappointed to see the issues you had with our lovely little property. I have had a strict No Pets policy in place during my 6 years ownership (also No Smoking inside the house!!) so I doubt the insects were fleas but you could have been bitten by midges outside or coming in through open windows. No-one before or since has mentioned this. I'm sorry there wasn't enough seating for folk you invited in. The property has adequate seating in the sitting room for 3 people (+ window seat) and there is a picnic bench seating 8 on the back patio, plus 3 garden chairs. The kitchen "blocked sink issue" was advisory only. This is an old cottage with narrow drainage pipes which can be slow to drain if cooking fat, for example, is poured down. With best wishes Vivienne. Property Owner

Accommodation was very well equipped with everything you could possibly need for a short stay. Beds were comfortable and the wood burner gave off an incredible amount of heat. The window seat in the bedroom was ideal for looking out over the water watching the world go by. A very good location for exploring this part of the country.

Downside was the bathroom which was at the back of the property with very steep stairs to contend with. The view from the upstairs double bedroom was amazing. However the beach was inaccessible and very stony. Overall enjoyed our stay even with the atrocious weather!

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay despite being there during Storms Dudley and Eunice! I am always happy to make up the downstairs bedroom with 2 single beds. There is a photo on the website of the steep stairs up to the double bedroom. Directly opposite the property is a low sea wall. 200m approximately along the road to the right is "Second Sands", with parking, picnic tables and access on to a stretch of sandy beach (except at high tide) for people and boats. Thank you again for visiting. Property Owner

The kitchen and bathroom could also do with a good clean, things were grimy. It may seem we are being petty but with the current situation surely cleanliness is a must, however the lady who owns it was very informative and helpful and may not be aware of the situation if she doesn't visit often.

In this case I needn’t have worried. There was plenty of space. The directions were good and we had no difficulty finding our cottage. The views from the upstairs windows are brilliant. We had a good view of the sunset and, later in the week, of the rough seas. Very impressive! Wigtown is the Scottish book town and we got quite a few bargains. Parking in the town is ample. About the location

PORT WILLIAM

Wigtown 10 miles; Newton Stewart 17 miles.

Dating from the end of the eighteenth century, the fishing village of Port William sits on the east side of Luce Bay on the Machars peninsula in the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland. There is much history in the area from early Christian sites through to more recent smuggling activities. The picturesque harbour that dates from the 18th century offers sea angling and is ideal for sailors too. There is a statue of a bronze otter erected in memory of Gavin Maxwell, author of ‘Ring of Bright Water’. His family home, Monreith House, is nearby and Maxwell used to exercise his otter on the beach below the house. Oscar Kokoschka, one of the twentieth century’s best known expressionist painters, spent time here during the Second World War. Today Port William is an attractive fishing village within easy reach of sandy beaches, a 9 hole links course just 2 miles away, walking and cycling in the Galloway hills and the cafés and shops of Wigtown, designated as Scotland’s first Book Town. Carnival Week is traditionally held in the first week in August with a wealth of events and attractions. Nature lovers will be drawn to the many nature reserves in the area as well as the childhood home of Gavin Maxwell at Elrig, just along the coast.
