  • "What a lovely cottage."

My hosts have thought of everything you could possibly need. I've never stayed in a place so clean, comfortable and well equipped. The cottage is joined on to Danny and Claire's house. They are lovely friendly people but just let you get on with it. There's a big garden which is a bonus with a dog. Really loved my stay.

  • "We really loved this cottage and its very peaceful, rural setting."

The dogs also really loved the well contained garden with lots of room to run about on grass. We have a wood burner at home and used the stove every evening which took the chill off a few of the nights. Although shared with the owner, there was plenty of off-road parking. The kitchen also had everything a short stay would require: with a large fridge with freezer, microwave, cooker/oven, dishwasher and washing machine, and lots of pots, pans, crockery etc. A couple of suggestions though... we found the TV to be too small in relation to the room size and the position of the sofa/chairs. Yes, they could be moved, but with the wood stove, it would be far more appropriate and safer to look at a TV upgrade and possibly a wall mounted one. The free view channel option was a tad limiting given the sky connection with many channels being unavailable. We watched dvds most nights... The double bed mattress was comfortable, but the pillows were a bit thin. We suggest four new pillows are bought along with mattress and pillow protectors. Overall, this is a great cottage. We really enjoyed our stay and toured as far as Melrose Abbey to the east and Drumlanrig Castle to the south west, and lots of places inbetween.

Hi Mr Green…. Thanks for the great feedback, really thoughtful and very much appreciated. We’ve swapped out the bedding and are looking at some upgrade options for the media set up. All the best, Danny Property Owner

The owners Claireand Danny were very friendly and helpful . It was set in the most gorgeous country side in Scotland, one quiet country lane. The main house was the Manse tithe church across the lane, now in private hands it is a very quaint country church, with beautiful grounds as had the cottage. Although only small, just one bedroom it is ideal, all on one level and plenty big enough for a couple, for a quiet time. We shall be back . Thank you Claire and Danny.

Danny was very welcoming & came across like nothing would be too much trouble. Although the cottage is attached to the main house we felt like we were in the middle of nowhere as we were never disturbed. The cottage was very clean & tidy with no problems. A few older reviews state the cottage is not what you see in the pictures but I can say this is not the case. We didn't find a single fault in our 3 night stay. The location is great if you want peace & quiet with fantastic backdrops of the hills & surrounding areas. This is a place I would definitely go back to.

I managed to get a lift to pick up the car and we hurriedly transferred our luggage and set off to Sweetpea and arrived quite late. The worst thing was the car hire could only be arranged for 24 hour maximum period so we were only able to stay one night at the cottage before we had to return home and take the hire car back. As a result my ratings for the cottage are based on only a few hours stay. The owner was very welcoming and friendly and was sympathetic to our unfortunate predicament. The location was quiet and the gardens extensive with good walks nearby which we could only enjoy for a very short period due to our time shortage.

  • "Firstly, your listing is incorrect, this cottage does not have oil fired central heating."

The cottage is extremely draughty (gaps around the door that you can see through) and the electric heaters were inadequate. This meant having to use the antiquated log burner to keep warm. The log burner caused significant problems with the air quality inside the cottage causing my asthma to flare up. This resulted in us leaving 2 days early. Had we known about the lack of central heating we would not have booked this cottage in winter.

First and foremost, i'm really sorry that you weren't able to enjoy your stay. The cottage has never had, as far as we know, oil fired central heating so i've no idea why the listing would state that. I'll make sure that's corrected straight away. The log burner is reasonably new and gets used regularly, so we ensure that it is serviced regularly and shouldn't effect the air quality at all. I've spoken to our chimney sweep that services the unit and he said that the storms and high winds could've pushed some of the smoke back in to the room. Either way, I apologise profusely for the uncomfortable experience. Property Owner

  • "The cottage was clean and easily kept warm."

The owners were very pleasant, as was their lovely dog 'Monty'. It was comfortable and quiet, just as we like it. However there were some issues which we feel will be of value to the owners for their attention. The kickboards under the kitchen sink and cooker kept falling down, which was annoying when washing up especially. The toaster is missing the knob for the right hand side, which determines the level of gradient for the bread to be toasted. Also, very importantly, one of the dining chairs was unusable, as the legs were unstable due to cross pieces being broken.

Hi Martin, thank you for taking the time to provide that feedback, lots of customers aren’t able to so we genuinely appreciate it. I was unaware of any of those issues and I’m so sorry you had to discover them, I hope they didn’t have a negative effect on your break . I’ll get them addressed as soon as possible. All the best. The owners of the cottage were very nice and friendly people. What we missed however was some more information about the facilities and what you can do (without a car) in the surroundings, if you can walk or bike there. Around Wiston were not so many possibilities for walking and biking because there were only big roads. We discovered New Lanard, where we could go by bus, that was a very nice and beautiful place to walk and where we could do all the shoppings ( in Lanard), but we did not know it in advance. More information about were we can walk, do the shoppings, rent a bike, public transport would have been convenient. There was a busstop in Wiston but not a direct connection between Edinghburg and Wiston. We came by bus from Edingburgh, asked the busdriver to stop in Wiston (where he passed) but he didn't know were it was, missed Wiston and stopped 2 miles further. So we were dropped with all the lugage in the middle of nowhere. We could only get some information after we booked and payed and the owner also didn't know everything, because he has a car and is not used to go by bus or bike.

About the location

BIGGAR

Lanark 12.6 miles; Peebles 18.1 miles; Edinburgh 29.6 miles; Glasgow 39.2 miles.

The town of Biggar on the edge of Scotland’s Southern Uplands is believed to have been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the present A702 is on the line of the former Roman road, linking the fort at Musselburgh with the Clyde Valley. The Normans followed in the 12th century and Biggar Burn was finally bridged, providing the first permanent crossing. The town today, with the market place at its centre, retains the linear layout showing the historical importance of the A702. It has many shops, cafes and bars and is particularly renowned for its collection of museums reflecting the history of notable individuals from the area. Visit the Moat Park Heritage Centre in a disused church for a flavour of Biggar’s history. With both the Southern Upland hills, the Borders town of Peebles and cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh all within easy reach, Biggar has something for everyone.
