  • "The cottage was quite clean; however, the bedrooms, especially the twin one, smelled of a dump."

It would be good to provide a cleaning spray so the guests can wipe the kitchen tops, table and the cooker. Also, please wash the blankets - they are not very fresh :/

Welcome pack could be better. Garden was nice and enclosed. Bathroom whilst nice is tight due to the stairs protruding into it. One of our party caught his head in the edge of this and cut it quite badly. Suggest it’s covered for health and safety reasons and warning signs erected.

The cottage is in a perfect area for shops, beaches and nice walks. We had fantastic weather and had a great holiday. Fantastic power shower and nice clean beds and towels. We did cancel our mid stay clean, I tried to contact someone to let them know, I ended up leaving a note outside saying we didn’t need it as we did it ourselves. Lovely washing machine, looks new. Unfortunately the cottage has a very bad smell of damp especially in the bedrooms. As you get to the top of the stairs there is also an awful smell that I couldn’t actually work out what it was. Not nice. There was not enough plates and cutlery if you are going to use the dishwasher, as when you have had dinner and put the dirty stuff in to be washed there isn’t anything left to use. We couldn’t wash up by hand as there wasn’t a plug in the sink. There was a bowl in the sink that was disgusting. We did not want to use this. Needs throwing away and a new one bought. The oven was extremely dirty with burnt on food from previous occupants. Baking trays were also very greasy and dirty from previous use. Only £1.50 to buy new ones in B&M or the Range. Cutlery in the drawers dirty and needed washing before use. The cleaner needs to be much more attentive. The two leather chairs in the living area are very uncomfortable, the only comfort was the settee. We didn’t like that we couldn’t lock the front door on the porch from the outside. The only door we could lock was the middle door. We have stayed in many areas in cornwall and found where Trehan is situated has been the best so far. I used to live in cornwall, but have now been travelling back twice a year for many years. Your cottage is beautiful, but the damp and the other smell upstairs and your cleaner let it down massively. This is the only reason we would not stay again or recommend to anyone.

My only "negatives" (just added so they can be addressed by owner and takes nothing away feom our enjoyment) - no coffee maker (we had to go and buy one), no info on whether we could yse real fire (I rang Sykes to ask) or where to put ashes - no equipment provided for this, bath towels a bit small. It had everything we needed to make our stay very comfortable. Loved the upside down living. It was great for the dogs with an enclosed garden and large porch to wipe them down before entering the property. The property was located in a quiet area but easily accessible to St Ives by car, bus, train or foot. Would highly recommend the property which is a credit to the owners.

  • "There is no doubt that the property is quaint, in a great location and well equipped for all your needs."

The garden is lovely and dog friendly. The double bed is most comfortable. BUT there are some very important points that are not mentioned in the marketing. The downstairs bedrooms (the twin in particular) have a strong musty/damp smell which makes it very uncomfortable. We slept in the double with the window open all night, which also causes an issue as the oil fired boiler is outside the window. When sitting in the garden the fumes are released from the boiler right over the sunny seating area (bad design and H&S issue). Appreciate that this is an old property, but it should have some sort of humidifier to alleviate the damp smell in the bedrooms and the boiler fumes filtered in a different direction. The photos of the bathroom are also misleading, as it is very small and the toilet is under a low slanting ceiling (watch your head)!

Thank you for your feedback. Trehan is a traditional Cornish cottage, which requires both heating and ventilation. We will certainly investigate the concerns you have raised. Cornish Cottage Holidays Property Owner

Spotlessly clean… we even received a lovely thoughtful welcome pack (locally sourced and sustainable packaging) very dog friendly, lovely secure garden to let them out, it was totally clear of any other dogs mess too. Close to the beach and shops for supplies. We’d love to book again for next year, we’ll have to go earlier as it’s Easter the same week next year, pushing the price up…. But to be fair, it’s very reasonably priced anyway? Could just do with a lighter duvet, thought there was one in the wardrobe, turned out to be a mattress protector, on the plus side, it’s a really toasty place. Everything was in good working order and it was great to have an enclosed garden for our dog and two good sized parking spaces. Main issue was that the bedrooms had feather cushions which really set our children off. We had several days of sniffles and sneezes before we clocked what the issue was and stored the cushions in the porch out of the way. It would be a good idea to replace these or ask potential guests if they are ok with feathers. Better instructions about the rubbish i.e. where to leave waste for compost and bin men would be helpful as well as that the dishwasher has a cutlery shelf right at the top (for those of us who have only used cutlery baskets before). Other suggestions would be changing the bedroom door handles as they make rather a noise opening them if you need to visit the bathroom in the night and leaving some logs for the stove if guests wants to use it on their first night. I stayed with my 2 friends and our little dogs (3 dogs in total). The cottage was really clean, warm and really nicely decorated with plenty of storage space. I was a bit concerned about the beds given the previous reviews but as promised by sykes cottages the beds had new mattresses and were really comfortable, The kitchen had all the facilities and pots and pans you would need and there was an additional fridge in the porch if you needed extra fridge space. The garden is really nicely done with plenty of space for the dogs to potter around and it was totally secure so they couldn't get out of the garden. As the cottage is in a lane with a just a few other properties it was lovely and quiet. The location is about 5 mins driving time from Carbis beach. With the cottage comes membership of the Carbis bay hotel C-spa and you get two passes to use each day. We loved the spa with the roof top pool and jacuzzi and sauna. The cottage also comes with washing machine and tumble dryer in an outside shed which was so handy when we came back from the beach. We also had a welcome gift of scones, cream and jam when we arrived which was a really nice touch. The cottage has a small bathroom but great shower really hot and spacious. The cottage also had two dedicated parking spaces which was great. I will definately be booking again. Thank you for a lovely stay :-) I would sincerely recommend this cottage.

I only scored it low for comfort because the main bed is a small double and as other reviewers have noted, the mattress is knackered! Could do with replacing, preferably with a king size bed. The hot water was also a bit hit and miss - we had a few cold showers towards the end of the week. Otherwise the cottage was well equipped and very warm and cosy, we never needed to light the wood burner even in late december/early january! But then we are northerners and the climate in cornwall is sub-tropical by our standards.... I found the instructions for dealing with the waste and recycling a bit confusing... not sure what to do with the bagged waste and which day to put bags out as instructions said thursday night but then there was another notice saying bins out saturday?

Thank you for your feedback, we appreciate you taking the time to let us know your thoughts. I am pleased to let you know that the owner has taken your comments on board and replaced the mattress in the master bedroom. The information regarding refuse has also been updated. That said, the cottage is beautiful and extremely warm and well kept - one of the best we’ve had. It’s peacefully situated and Carbis Bay Spa was a welcoming experience one evening. The safe garden was great for our dog, cooking facilities and WiFi were better than anticipated- just need some larger mugs and a corkscrew for my personal taste. We had read the other reviews about the mattresses and having travelled extensively thought they couldn’t be that bad - they were. I cannot believe this has yet to be addressed by the owners for a relatively small sum of money, I suppose I was hoping they would read and action customer feedback. Decked out beautifully, and not twee. Love the Mousehole Cat touches in the children's room. Old stone cottage which does mean things can feel a bit damp after a while, but this wasn't helped by a really wet week weather wise. We had everything we needed. Brilliant secure garden for our dog, which well maintained. A washing line in the garden would have been useful for wet towels. The double bed in the 'master' bedroom was very creaky and not that comfortable. I mention this as I can see other comments have been made about this. I think it is quite old and due for replacement. The single beds in the other bedroom were fine. Locally, the fish and chips at Becks was fab. La Casita restaurant also great. All of us (dog included) enjoyed Porthkidney beach. We had to take our recyclable rubbish out and find communal bins, neighbours were putting out their recycling, so being able to do the same would have been appreciated. The garden was perfect, enclosed and safe for your dog and the kids. BBQ in the shed and also beach buckets, and some chairs to take the beach. My only criticism is the double bed mattress it is really uncomfortable, you can feel all the springs. The location is good too, a few mins drive to St Ives and walkable to carbis bay. ST IVES

Penzance 6 miles.

One of Cornwall's prettiest harbour towns, St Ives offers narrow streets, tight-packed cottages nestling around the quayside, the Tate Gallery and Barbara Hepworth museum, fabulous beaches, superb shops, a thriving community of artists, great pubs and restaurants and much more. With its semi Bohemian lifestyle and romantic air, it's easy to see why this is the county's premier holiday resort. The surrounding area has much for the visitor to see and do with abundant wildlife, fabulous coastal walks, top quality surfing and the Celtic mysteries of the Land's End Peninsula are all within easy reach. A superb destination!
