  • "A nicely decorated cottage but a very small size."

There are three bedrooms so it can sleep up to six people but it should not be advertised for more than four. The sitting room can not accommodate more than four and the kitchen would also be a squeeze for more than four people. Well equipped kitchen other than the plates. There were only five big plates so we had to wash them all the time. There is a very wobbly wardrobe in the main bedroom. Please fix it to the wall as it is very dangerous. The biggest problem though is that there is no recycling. There are signs everywhere to put all rubbish in the black bags with all the other rubbish and in to the green bin outside. Everyone in the village has different colour bags for different materials except this cottage. We bought our recyclable waste home as we couldn't bare to just send it to the landfill. Please recycle.

Hi there, thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed the cottage’s decor and charm, and we're thrilled that you got to enjoy the beautiful North Cornwall surroundings. We’ve already ordered new plates, so they'll soon be on hand to make things easier. We’ll also have a look at the wardrobe to ensure it’s safe and secure – thank you for flagging that. With regard to waste and recycling, we completely understand your concerns. Cornwall Council doesn’t provide a waste collection for holiday lets, so we currently work with a commercial waste collector who unfortunately doesn’t offer a recycling option. There are recycling facilities nearby in Pendeen and St Just, and we’ll provide information about these options in future. Thanks again for helping us improve, and we hope to welcome you back to Cornwall soon! Property Owner

  • "We had a really lovely stay at miners cottage."

The house was in a beautiful location close to lovely cliff top walks and short drives away from some stunning locations. We loved the house and found it very cosy. However we were disappointed about the comfort of the mattress in the master bedroom, particularly as I see this has been bought up in past reviews. The mattress was very springy, creaky and very worm out. Also the curtains in all of the rooms were very thin and didn't keep any light out. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay, the kitchen was well stocked with utensils and was a small but pleasant space to cook in. Thank you for our stay. We hope to be back again one day!

  • "I feel really bad for the owner of this property as the recent feedback does not reflect the stay we had at all."

The cottage was as expected for a period property on the coast priced at less than £100 per night. The cottage is lovely and full of character. Upon arrival the ut had clearly had a good clean and we were given lots of fresh towels, bedding and blankets. Yes, there are some drawings from previous little artists on the walls and furniture from previous holidaymakers, but it did not affect our break in any way at all. The cottage is in a perfect location for exploring the cornish heritage coast. The local pubs are fantastic with really friendly staff and locals who make you feel really welcomed. The mining area surrounding the property is fascinating and well worth a sunset walk (pack a torch!). Great for the dog too. We loved the special touch of providing some tea and proper cornish biscuits. If you expect your accommodation to not have cobwebs, the odd fly, or some felt tip scrawlings may I suggest you choose an adults only new build in the city as opposed to a family friendly cottage in an industrial village on the coast?

View spoilt by kitchen windows need replacing, seals broken, all smears. Uneven concrete in back yard. Weeds a foot high. Tumble dryer absolutely filthy, didn't want to use it. Pile of dirty towels left on floor by washing machine. No hanging space in double bedroom. Twin bedroom used for storage for hoover etc. No table and chairs to sit outside to eat. Cleanliness not great. Looks overall shabby. That being said, nice cosy compact cottage. Well equipped especially the kitchen. Great location to Trewellard Arms at top of road. Meadery 2 minute walk. Fantastic for coastal walks. Cleaners need to pay attention to detail not just the basics. Cottage just a bit of a lift. Won't book again

As notedin previously reviews ... Oven/hob instructions absent. Fridge freezer badly needs defrosting. Wifi TV problematic. Apps require user logins. No 'live' TV (does property have licence?). Not a fan of Sky but streaming without dish now a possible option.

The fact sheet said there were instructions for the cooker in folder - they werent. 3. We were only given one dish washer tablet for a four day stay. 4. • "Our family of two adults and three children enjoyed our stay in the cottage over a period of three nights."

The cottage was very private and we didn't meet any neighbours. We enjoyed our stay and the facilities in the cottage were very good although we did find the wooden log fire in the living room pretty ineffective as a source of heat; and since there was no other form of heating in the living room then we were a bit chilly. A fan heater is supplied but since the whole house runs only on electricity and energy prices are rising fast then we spared the owners the expense, otherwise they'd be making no profit from our stay! The cottage was draught-free but bring a warm jumper and slippers in the cold months as the tiled floor in the kitchen feels cold if you're one of those families who take their shoes off when you enter a home. All the bedrooms had a heater but one was broken. The washing machine and tumble dryer are in an out-house and we didn't use them. In the kitchen we had most things. The knives were good quality and there was even a knife sharpener and sharpening steel. If you like to wash up using a sponge and brush then bring your own. Towels were provided in both the kitchen and bathroom. The beds were comfortable and the whole cottage was cosy. There's a TV connected to WiFi. The Samsumg TV has apps for Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. so all you need to do is login. There's no DVD player. Some books and games are supplied. Make sure to read the black folder before you move in because it has tips on where to find important electrical switches (eg. emersion heater) otherwise you'll have no hot water or shower. The small village of Pendeen has one small Spar shop, which also sells logs for the fire. Local pubs do meals at London prices. There's an old-fashioned petrol station in the village too, selling petrol as motorway prices. We recommend a visit to Geevor tin mine in Pendeen. We would happily stay in the cottage again. Thanks to the owners for a very pleasant and comfortable experience.

Lovely wood burner in the inglenook fireplace and a comfortable kitchen diner which was a nice sociable space with a view of the sea off in the distance. Downsides: The stairs are awkward and doorway low from living room through to kitchen (walk through under the stairs) but that was mostly an issue for my 6 foot + son and husband. My daughter did knock her nose coming down the stairs when she wasn’t paying attention but she is also very tall. It’s a cottage over 200 years old so understandable but it is worth a mention as it could be a real bother for some less agile. Overall though it is a charming and peaceful cottage with a lovely seascape and I would certainly recommend it.

  • "A lovely, cosy cottage, close to the coast path - just what we wanted."

Wood burner great, although no kindling provided at all, so we didn’t have a fire on the first night. We liked the kitchen-diner too, which was light and a good place to spend time. The kitchen was very well equipped and well lit. Speakers in the dining area was also a bonus. The neighbour parked a large van at the back of the property though, which obscured our view of the sea when we were in the dining area, which was disappointing. The bedrooms were all lovely, with great views from the bath bedroom particularly. Very comfortable master bed too and plenty of storage space upstairs. This was a last minute escape for us, which I booked quickly and hadn’t logged that the bathroom is downstairs and the stairs are very steep to negotiate in the middle of the night. The bathroom however was clean and modern (although only one toilet roll was provided). On balance, a lovely bolt-hole but the downstairs loo may stop us booking again.

We are really pleased that you appreciated the sea views and found the beds very comfortable. We want all of our guests to have a comfortable stay and enjoy the beauty of West Cornwall. Thank you for this feedback, it is helpful so we can improve the experience for our guests. I have passed on your comments to the housekeeping team so we can improve the things we can change. • "Absolutely awful!"

! The Miners cottage was so unclean that it made me cry. There were layers of dust on all the many niknaks around the property and clearly visible under tables/ chairs (Covid!!) why are there so many unnecessary things around. The sheets appeared to be nice and clean but the bed throws and pillows felt almost damp and clary to touch, I was not convinced that they had been washed and again, just another unnecessary item to risk the spread of germs. The shower was appalling, a trickle of water. There are walls crumbling on the staircase. The heating was almost non-existant, there are a few old storage heaters that didn’t give off much heat and a log burner with enough wood for one fire which lasted just a few hours. (We stayed in January) The whole place made me feel unclean, I would never go back and would never recommend. It should be removed from the site until they give the place a complete overhaul, it needs cleaning from top to bottom. The location of the cottage is fabulous and it could be amazing if the owners addressed the issues. This completely spoiled our stay in Cornwall and has made us reluctant to use Sykes Cottages if they allow places like this on their website! I very rarely complain about things but this really upset me.

We are sorry that the cottage made you feel unclean and your stay was spoiled. Like you, we think the location is fabulous and we love West Cornwall and all it has to offer. We take cleaning very seriously and your comments have been passed on to the housekeeping team who work incredibly hard to make sure guests enjoy their stay. As this is an old cottage we have provided heaters where necessary and will ensure the storage heaters are turned up when it is chilly. We provide guests with a bag of logs when they arrive at the cottage so they can enjoy the wood burner but unfortunately, this cannot be an unlimited supply. We take feedback seriously because we want people to love the charm of Miners Cottage as much as we do and we will work to make sure we can improve where we can. Property Owner

The Cottage is very cosy and has lovely features. It was very quiet, both in terms of the neighbouring properties and the area, we found it very peaceful. Having views of the sea from all the windows was gorgeous too. The back courtyard is nothing to look at, but was perfect for letting the dogs out. We had not informed them so they must’ve known about it in advance of our stay. A week with a split toilet seat is not acceptable and is a health and safety issue. We had my elderly mother and a young child with us. We ordered a replacement from Amazon and exchanged it. I expect to be reimbursed and will forward the invoice. Please tell me where to send the invoice. We really appreciated the sea views from every bedroom window, decor was lovely and beds really comfortable.

We are really pleased that you and your family appreciated the sea views, the decor of the cottage and found the really beds comfortable. We want all of our guests to have a comfortable stay and enjoy the beauty of West Cornwall. I am sorry that the toilet seat was a problem during your stay. Please use the phone number in the welcome pack to ring any time about any issues and we can respond straight away. In this case, the management agent had been informed of the broken toilet seat and had booked maintenance to fix this. Had they known that you intended to buy one they would have updated you with progress. Going forward, I have asked them to be proactive and contact guests if there are any maintenance issues outstanding to keep everyone in the loop. Possible difficult for those with difficulties walking, as the sea/ cliffs are at the end of the road, but that road is very downhill and therefor very uphill on the way back. It's only 15 mins from Penzance if you need anything, but there is a small shop just up the road. The place itself has everything you need. It's beautiful, it really is, I'm VERY ocd and thorough though and I'd be making some improvements if it were my place. Nothing major, just bits to tidy up and perhaps make a little cleaner/ more presentable. I'd happily go back, without quesiton, great for us with the dogs on a walking holiday. Beware the coastal path, it's so up and down it takes a lot of effort and time to traverse. To Lands End from the house is about 6 hours, we stopped for the dogs a lot as it was hot and explored a little, so you could probably do it in 4-5 at a march.
