  • "I would not recommend staying at Chi Lowen, whilst the location is perfect in a lovely little village close to the coast."

The cleanliness really does let this accommodation down. Upon arrival we were met with cobwebs all over the ceiling in the entrance hall, thick layers of dust everywhere including surfaces of furniture, rotten food left in the bottom of the dishwasher and mould in the washing machine drawer. Not to mention the fridge was filthy dirty with a distinct smell of spilt milk or similar. The bedroom with en-suite had black spots of mould all over the ceiling in the bedroom itself and the shower cubicle deeming that bedroom unuseable. The small front garden was unkept and the grass overgrown - this would take 5 minutes to mow if that so why wasn't it done? The brambles from the neighbours garden overhang making the very narrow pathway leading to the main entrance door unusable. Furthermore, the outside security light is so dull that you cannot see where you are stepping at night and as a result my sister fell flat on her face leaving the cottage one evening to head out to dinner. I did message the owner regarding the cleanliness, she informed me that prior to our arrival the housekeeper had spent 6 hours cleaning. I am sorry to say I am unable to believe this. The owner did arrange for the housekeeper to return but it was only to address the issues I raised above, it still remained dirty. As I say, a real shame as with some care and maintenance it could be a lovely holiday home.

Thank you for your feedback. I am very sorry to hear that you would not recommend our lovely tradtional cottage. The orginal exposed granite stone walls add authenticity to the cottage, and can leave a small residue of grit. We do endeavour to keep this clean, however, when brushed against it can leave a dusty finish. Unfortunately , due to the recent downpours in Cornwall and across the UK, we have been unable to cut the grass, or the neighbouring climber which is intertwined through the trellis. It was nice to see you thought Chi Lowen was a lovely holiday and home, and we can ensure all future guests that any problems will always be addressed. Property Owner

  • "Excellent location."

However the cottage lacked general maintenance and cleanliness eg access to front door via the path was limited due to overgrown bushes. The cleanliness of the cottage was poor. Surfaces had not been wiped down, cupboard doors were unclean, hairs in bath, base of shower cubicle was mouldy and hadn’t been cleaned and there was splashes up several walls. Also, a feeling of dampness ran throughout the property, especially the bedding.

  • "Family of 4 with a dog spent a lovely week here late July."

I'd booked with 6 people in mind but glad it was just the 4 of us as it is a compact cottage! Location is perfect. Pendeen is a great base for the our favourite part of the SW coastal path, 20 minute walk to the best (dog friendly) beach Portheras and on the bus route for the open top bus between Penzance and St Ives. Best pasties in the area just along the road at the Geevor mine cafe and the local pubs are welcoming. We brought our Ooni and enjoyed pizzas in the back garden to wonderful sunsets. Neighbour very friendly. We were, however, disappointed to find the cottage not cleaned thoroughly on our arrival: the floors hadn't been properly swept or mopped (indeed there wasn't a mop to be found, but the owner – who was very responsive – reimbursed me for a few purchases I made), and the back garden felt a bit spartan. Storage is a major issue inside the house: very little kitchen cupboard space and there was nowhere to put away clothes in the bedroom with the shower. I missed not having a bedside table. Not sure what we'd have done had we brought the bikes with us: no external access to the back garden, and nowhere safe to store items. An outside tap would be a useful addition for hosing down wetsuits; a bbq would be a nice touch. We lost count of the times we banged our heads going up and down the stairs and also leaving the living room. The lounge is simple but comfortable, good tv and big sofas. Heating was easy to use and effective (we didn't light the wood burners), but the hot water ran out after 3 showers each day, which might be an issue if 6 people using? The upstairs sink is just a hand sink really, so we all used the downstairs bathroom off the kitchen. Upstairs shower is good, but it's in one the corner of one of the bedrooms. The back bedrooms with the double beds are better arranged and the sea view is lovely.

  • "The cottage overall was lovely."

We were a group of four friends and we found the cottage to be perfect for us, we had everything we needed. We did find that the beds were a bit soft and not the most comfortable. The heating was efficient and we were quickly able to make the cottage cosy. The back garden was nice and we enjoyed the sea view. The front garden could do with some TLC, we couldn't use the path due to the climber growing over. Small things though and overall we were happy. Thank you.

Thank you for your feedback it’s very much appreciated We were waiting on the neighbour trimming the climber as it’s actually their plant ( as you identified ) and didn’t want to be responsible for killing it by just cutting the interwoven stems That said it has now been trimmed by the neighbour and access is much improved Sorry for your inconvenience I’m pleased you otherwise enjoyed your stay Property Owner

  • "1. We found the cottage dusty and cobwebby, the floors in bedrooms especially, when anything dropped dusty."

The windows behind the shutters dust and cobwebs .Bench in Kitchen behind table not been cleaned, very dusty in the light of Covid not good. Bedrooms small very little to no space to put clothes or anything else, ie book, drink, glasses etc and as against the wall meant one of us had to disturb t he other to get out of bed. Not ideal Doors needed oiling as creaked so getting up at night to the toilet a noise thing disturbing others. Recycled rubbish not clear what was recyclable as all Local Authorities differ on what they recycle Or which day recycling was put out. Also the Food waste bin, clearly not a council one so did not know what to do with this. Lounge chimney smoking? needed cleaning. It felt as if with 4 double beds , one in each small room leaving little other space a holiday let maximising profit at the cost of comfort. Some basic kitchen items ie cheese grater not provided. I certainly wouldnt recommend for more than 4/5 people On the upside a lovely position in a lovely part of Cornwall. my favourite area West Penwith and otherwist comfortable

I have waited sometime to respond to this but it has clearly affected bookings moving forward so am responding now It’s a shame this review was the last of the season as many previously had been very complimentary The cottage is over 100 years old with natural granite walls and beams inside, this is its charm. There are 4 bedrooms two with K/S beds and two with double beds this is not to facilitate maximum profit but our own family requirements as we use the cottage when it is not rented out 3 of the rooms have a clothes rail , 1 a number of hanging hooks and 2 have shelves or drawers in addition. We make the most of the space available but it is a granite cottage, that said we manage to provide 2 toilets , 2 showers , a bath, and 2 woodburners which also unfortunately might contribute to a little extra dust but wouldn’t be without ,large smart Tv, washing machine, dryer, microwave , coffee machine , soda water maker ,and a kitchen/ dining table which will seat at least 6 plus outside table and chairs to seat 6 under a verandah with sea view !! The chimneys are swept each year and the manuals as to how to operate are available to read Basic items and not so basic items are available unfortunately these sometimes ‘ disappear ‘ between bookings ( cheese grater , upstairs toilet mirror , small pan, remote control ) and it is not always possible to replace immediately Rubbish and recycling I thought was obvious but can always write more detailed instructions I believe there are photos on the website of the interior of the cottage but anyone reading this access to the beds is generally only from one side. There are 3 pubs in walking distance , a shop , fish and chip shop, and the open top bus to St Ives passes the front door What else can I say …. Property Owner

Pendeen is a very nice village with 2 pubs and a little shop. The only thing which is a bit complicated for children or ederly people are the stiff stairs. I would rexommand this cottage anyway.

Enclosed front and back gardens ideal for dogs and children. Within easy reach of Sennen, St Ives and Penzance. On coastal bus route. Well equipped kitchen, four double bedrooms ( furniture rather sparse if that sort of thing bothers you). Effective heating in all rooms if coming out of season. Owner very friendly and responsive. Would stay again if coming to this part of Cornwall.

  • "Certainly value for money, this cottage suited us for its location near to the coastal path, and easy parking."

the bedrooms were cramped, with no bedside cabinets and little storage space, and the stairs were uneven and odd. we got fed up with banging our heads on the beam going up and manoeuvring to get down, so if you are tall, be aware. one bedroom had a shower unit accessed from beside the bed, which was strange, and the ‘main’ bathroom was only accessible through the kitchen. so, a bit odd really, however, an excellent water and heating system, plus a nice wood burning stove helped, but our over all impression was a bit make-shift. we were a small party and coped, but a full house would be quite a squeeze. Pendeen has basic but good facilities. 5/10

Thank you for your comments. I would like to highlight that the property is a 19th century building which is over 200 years old. The property has been fully renovated. Going up the stairs and entering the kitchen, you may have to duck, height depending but there are visible signs displayed to that affect. We are pleased to see you had enjoyed you stay. Again, thank you very much for your comments and for taking the time to let us know your thoughts. Customer feedback is very important to help us continually improve our standards. Property Owner

  • "Cottage was lovely, clean and well equipped and we totally enjoyed our stay."

The following are recommendations/suggestions that may or may not be useful, that may help other guests staying at the cottage. The ceilings are quite low on the stairwell to the kitchen and up the stairs and three of our party hit their heads many times!. I wondered if it would not be possible to put up some kind of visual warning on the lowest parts to remind taller people to remember to lower their heads before using the stairs/steps, we eventually did remember but do think this would be helpful to taller guests. Key to rear gate would have been useful to allow access rather than going out roadside all the time, but perhaps this is locked for a reason.

Thank you very much for your valued comments and glad to see you enjoyed your stay. You will be delighted to know that we now have such signs displayed in the relevant areas. Property Owner

The cottage comfortably fitted 5 adults and 1 teenager. We enjoyed having meals at the table, chilling in the cozy sitting room and sitting outside watching the amazing sunsets. We loved discovering Portheras beach and exploring the mines. Pendeen is within easy access of St Ives and Penzance. Would definitely recommend a stay here.

The cottage was spotlessly clean, good amenities, and our highlight was the wonderful view of the sea in the back garden. It’s a great location for exploring this part of Cornwall if you have a car, there is so much to see within a 20 drive of the property. Finally the owner was thoughtful enough to leave some nibbles for our arrival which was a lovely touch and much appreciated. We would love to return!

The property

On a road that many consider to be one of the finest drives in the UK, you will find on the south-west coast of Cornwall the village of Pendeen, home to this delightful holiday home Chi Lowen.

A traditional granite cottage beautifully renovated to bring it perfectly into the 21st century, it is host to four bedrooms and features outstanding views out to the sea, perfectly suited to a couple or group of avid walkers because of the proximity to the coastal path.

Enter the cottage after a fun-filled day and move into the sitting room to put on the woodburning stove, set in the middle of a vibrant orange fireplace, complementing the rooms decor and the sofas beautifully, a great place to unwind with a glass of wine.

When it's time to prepare the evening meal, follow the chef into the kitchen/diner and sit at the long farmhouse style bench oak table and be impressed when dinner is served.

The kitchen is equipped with every appliance you will need, and looks out of the back of the property overlooking the sea.

An enclosed gravelled patio area lies to the back with seating, so you can come out and enjoy your morning coffee and watch the world wake up as you do before this gorgeous vista.

When it's time to rest your head at night, the first-floor is home to four bedrooms; two king-size, one of which has an en-suite shower, and two doubles, each with rustic exposed granite stone walls and wooden ceiling beams.

all of which are served by a first-floor WC and hand basin, and the family bathroom found on the ground-floor with a WC, hand basin, bath and shower over.

Being in the centre of the quaint coastal village of Pendeen means you have pubs and shops on your doorstep, as well as various small local businesses with fresh local produce.

Take advantage of the proximity to the coastal path and walk alongside the sea to experience some stunning scenery and landscapes, and stop along some of the most picturesque coves and landmarks.

You are near to the famous Land's End where you can enjoy a great day out with the family, or head over to the popular town of Penzance, move further to Marazion and walk up to St Michael's Mount when the tide is out.

Chi Lowen is a beautifully presented traditional cottage that you will love returning to after exploring the amazing Cornish coast.
