The staff were all helpful & there asap if you needed anything. Good facilities. Enjoyed a lovely trip to Plymouth by train, station nearby. Kit Hill wonderful views, if you go visit the Cafe, cake yummy. Love Tavistock. We took our filter jug for water. Needs end of season sprucing up & patio gate for dog.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We’re happy to hear you enjoyed the property and surrounding areas. We have now carried out our end-of-season clean and are ready for another busy year. We hope to see you again. Property Owner

  • "Little Jacks was an ideal holiday cottage for our needs."

One of the smaller mattresses was dodgy but the children said this made it comfy. I think for an adult it may be unsuitable but a child it didn’t cause any issues. A benefit of LJ’s is the use of the leisure facilities, which we made use of daily. The information booklet contains some really useful advice on places to visit but it really would benefit from an update. The years have not been kind to it. Mentioned on a previous review, the decking is grubby and I did slip down a step, but I wasn’t wearing my glasses and the roads and pavements had that slippy feel due to the weather. None of this put me off LJ’s. I will happily go back. It had everything we needed and in a good location to explore E/Cornwall + Devon areas. Recommended!

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We’re very happy to hear you and your family enjoyed your stay. All the issues mentioned have now been fully addressed with the Owner and they are thankful for your constructive feedback. We hope to welcome you back to Little Jack’s again soon. Property Owner

  • "Positives are that the lodge has a very spacious living/kitchen/dining area."

However, outdoor space was not clean. Decking was dirty and unswept, not cleaned before arrival. Seating could do with being replaced as picnic bench is tatty. Photo on website shows decking in its “new” state which does not reflect the reality. I contacted the maintenance manager via phone who was very pleasant and apologetic about this and advised he would come the following morning to remedy. He also said he would bring a bottle of Prosecco - a very nice gesture! However, the next day I didn’t feel the clean was thorough (was done whilst out) as the decking was still very dirty beneath the table. Sadly no bottle of Prosecco either, so unsure why that was ever promised! I also rang Sykes to advise the state of the twin beds was not acceptable. The mattress on one is fit for nothing but the skip - it’s clearly broken as it’s sunken and you can feel the springs. It’s fortunate my child was ok to sleep on this as I certainly wouldn’t have been. Neither of the beds had mattress protectors which is basic hygiene practice that I would expect in any rental. The sheets were also threadbare and did not fit the mattresses properly. I was advised that the man coming for the decking would also remedy this issue. The sheets were replaced but were still too small. I can see a comment from 2021 which states that mattress protectors are needed and a mattress replacing, which has been responded to as being addressed by the owners, but clearly has not been. This is quite disappointing. In terms of the rest of the accommodation, I would suggest not mentioning that there are games and books - there are no books and two games, one with no instructions. Folder of information was falling apart and could do with being replaced and refreshed. All in all this location is fine as a base, however I would not stay in this accommodation again.

Thank you for providing your feedback which we spoke with the owner about. We are very sorry the outside area was not as expected for your arrival, however we are pleased that this was remedied for you as soon as it was reported. The outdoor seating is treated annually. The mattresses were all recently replaced and the linen issues have been flagged with the housekeeper, mattress protectors are normally provided and we are sorry that on this occasion they were not. Under the instruction of the property owner we have removed the mention of books and games. Property Owner

  • "The only reason I gave a slightly lower mark for the Comfort score was because, 1 out of the 2 single beds - the one I chose first out of the two to sleep on for the first few days, was so soft that i nearly disappeared in it when I sat on it!"

And it wasn’t great for turning round on in the middle of the night either... However, I swapped over to the other single, the one that was by the window, midway through our week’s stay - and it was superb. That one was nice and firm and much more conducive for tossing and turning - which I tend to do lots of through the night! I would also just like to add though, my mum said her double bed was fantastic. AND the leather sofa and dining table were both stunning to look at and exceptionally comfortable to sit on :) p.s. the food and the staff at The Honicombe Manor Park were absolutely fantastic. So helpful, so friendly, very approachable. And of all the meals I had during our stay on our many excursions out around the Devon and Cornwall area, the best 2 I had all week were actually the 2 meals I ate at the Honicombe Manor Clubhouse on the site! I shook the chef’s hand Sunday night and told him that the food was superb!

  • "We had a lovely time at Little Jack's at Honnicombe Manor."

It is a very well presented little cottage that was very clean and had most things we could want. It was clean, comfortable and well maintained set in a nice location and had easy access to most of the activities on the site. There is a fairly decent internet connection in the cottage although it did slow at peak times of the day and with 3 of us using it (better than most holiday cottages I've been to though). There were unfortunate limitations on accessing things like the swimming pool and gym as well as the games room being closed, but this was due to Covid 19 restrictions which were unavoidable. You had to book to use either pool and the gym as well as having to prebook to go into the restaurant. The location is great with a restaurant/pub on site as well as a small shop. A big Tesco is only 3 miles away and another supermarket in the opposite direction not much further than that. There are a few sites of interest such as Cotehele manor and activity centres such as Tamar Trails within a couple of miles and good driving links to most of Cornwall and Devon. I recommend you go and have a wander to the top of nearby Kitt Hill for a look around. For the mandatory cornish pasties there is a small factory shop in nearby Callington for 'Over the top pasties' that has recently won awards and was absolutely delicious. The only slight criticisms I would make, and these are 'slight'; We could have done with a spare set of towels for us all and a wok to do easy one pot family meals. The water pressure isn't always amazing, but was always good enough and we had no issues with water temperature or the water going off which is mentioned in other reviews.

  • "Could not fault the property."

Really comfortable and spacious. My problem was parking. There is no parking alongside the property or it seens anywhere on the site. There were two spaces a short distance away i was lucky enough to get one when i arrived. I have two disabled people in my party and i have bronchiectasis which makes me short of breath. The property was up hill from the space. I have a lot of kit to unload on my own my wife and daughter can't help. My daughter has a mobility scooter but can walk a short distance. My wife us totally blind with a guide dog. The rest of the week i had to park much further away. So in short. Not suitable for me or anyone with mobility problems. We will not be returning. It was good to have a break after the lockdown but in futute i will make sure i can park by the property when i book self catering

  • "Little Jacks is a lovely clean and modern place to stay with all home comforts."

We did feel that the mattresses were far too soft for our liking and the double bed is on the small side (for our preference) which unfortunately didn’t aid a good nights sleep. The only other issue is the water on the holiday site causes the water to stop at random points in the day and makes showering unpredictable, but this is the water supply and effects all the homes on the park and is unavoidable we were told. We loved the pools on the site but were unimpressed with the food in the on site restaurant. Overall it is a very friendly holiday park and was in a very beautiful part of Cornwall.

  • "On the Thursday before we were due to arrive on the Saturday, we received a phone call to say the house would be unavailable until the Sunday."

This was completely unacceptable to us because of other arrangements based on a Saturday arrival and I protested vigorously. On the Thursday evening I booked a hotel for the Saturday night (not cancelable) so we would at least have somewhere to sleep - only to receive a message later to say the house would be ready for us after all on the Saturday. I shall never use Sykes Cottages again and will not recommend them in any way because of the distress and expense caused to us.

Thank you for your comments, we are sorry to hear that you were so disappointed. The owners advised us on the Thursday lunchtime that due to Coronavirus they were having difficulty preparing the property for your Saturday arrival and hoped that you would be able to delay your stay by 1 day with an appropriate refund. Although you initially accepted, we understand you later changed your mind and advised this wasn’t a possibility. We therefore liaised with the owners and that same evening were able to confirm the owner had been able to make arrangements to have it ready for you on the Saturday as originally booked. We are sorry that this set of events led to such distress on your part and we apologise for the inconvenience. We do hope that once you arrived you were able to settle in and enjoy a relaxing holiday. Property Owner

About the location

CALLINGTON

Tavistock 9 miles; Launceston 11.5 miles; Plymouth 14.6 miles.

Callington is a Cornish market town, rich in mining heritage and overlooked by Kit Hill, the highest point in the area, donated to the people of Cornwall by Prince Charles to celebrate the birth of Prince William. From the top of Kit Hill there are fabulous views across south-east Cornwall as far as Plymouth Sound. Callington is set in the heart of the Tamar Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and offers a good selection of shops, inns and cafes, as well as being the home of Ginsters Cornish pasties. A few miles away, the quaint village of Calstock clings to the steep banks of the river Tamar and is dominated by the splendid Calstock Railway Viaduct, a giant 11-arched stone construction supporting one of Britain’s most picturesque branch lines running through the Tamar Valley. Other interesting places along the river are Cotehele, a beautiful historic house and gardens owned by the National Trust with a small quay and inn, and Morwhellam Quay, a theme park that staged a living history production for the BBC and where visitors can explore the rich mining heritage and watch blacksmiths, potters and craftsmen at work. The pannier market town of Tavistock is only nine miles from Callington and is well worth a visit on your way to a day’s walk on Dartmoor. A splendid base to explore south Cornwall and West Devon.
