  • "We have stayed in a lot of cottages over the years."

I’d like to start with positive. The cottage is very well positioned for exploring beautiful Boscastle and the bedrooms were lovely with extremely comfortable beds. We were a little disappointed by the level of maintenance, cleanliness and lack of attention to detail at Pencliffe in general. There were a lot of cobwebs and dust downstairs. The lamp shade over the stairs has come apart. There were no oven gloves, the tea towels were damp and stained. The kitchen in general was not very clean - the cooker top was greasy and the sink very stained and there were crumbs on the counters, the kick board by the cooker doesn’t stay on because the clip is broken and the pedal on the bin doesn’t work. The sink in the bathroom continuously leaked and we had to keep kitchen paper under the pipe. I suspect that the cottage is struggling with damp downstairs largely due to the lack of light and close proximity to the cliffs. I appreciate that this is a difficult problem to solve. We were very cold on our first night in the cottage but there was no wood for the fire. This is a shame as the cottage was advertised as logs being provided. We just felt like the property would benefit from a really good clean downstairs and a little more attention to detail and maybe a review of how it is listed because it wasn’t quite what we expected. We are really not complainers at all and intend this review to be informative rather than viewed as negative.

Thank you for your honest review. We were extremely concerned by your feedback and have discussed all points raised with our housekeeper. The presentation of Pencliffe you encountered falls way short of what we would expect, and believe by far the majority of your issues can easily be fixed. As you can see from the majority of our previous reviews this is not the normal standard, and we are very sorry that your stay at Pencliffe was not up to either your or our expectations. Thank you for your understanding. Penny and John Property Owner

  • "Our stay at Pencliffe was really nice."

This is the second time we have stayed here and love Boscastle, the atmosphere, the walks and the scenery. Our only comment was the comfort of the bed, which was a little to soft for us, the choice of pillows. Also the shower was not too good. These points are down to individual tastes and does not take away the lovely stay in Boscastle. We will certainly book this location again.

  • "Another lovely and relaxing week at Pencliffe and Boscastle."

The more we stay at Pencliffe, the more we want to stay which is why we will be back in December. We had a bit of an out of hours issue towards the end of the week, but the support model offered by the owners and Sykes resolved this; communication was excellent throughout. This, however, did not spoil the relaxing and very cosy time we had there; a walk round the harbour, a meal in the Cobweb then back for a glass of wine in front of the slowly flickering fire just couldn`t be beaten.

  • "Unfortunately the cottage was not clean and also in the back bedroom there was black mold on the wall, so we had to move bedrooms."

Other people in the notebook had made complaints as well on the cleanliness of the cottage and some of the complaints had been torn out of the notebook provided. We think the owners should be aware of the mold.

Thank you for your comments. We're very sorry that Pencliffe was not well presented for your stay. We will definitely discuss your feedback with our housekeeper. We maintain a housekeeper's notebook, and ask guests to assist us to identify minor maintenance issues as we go. This helps us address any issues raised by guests, between changeovers. When issues are dealt with, we ask the housekeeper to sign them off in the book. This has always worked well in the past, however, we will review this process to ensure we continue to maintain the highest possible standards at Pencliffe for all our guests. Thanks again, Penny and John Property Owner

A beautiful cottage in a beautiful location. On arrival the cottage was immaculate and we were very grateful to find a bottle of Prosecco waiting for us. The rooms were comfortable, and when the evenings did het a bit chilly we had the joy of the wood burner to keep us toastie. I would wholeheartedly recommend Pencliffe and we shall certainly return.

Would recommend leaving a few umbrellas for general use and also perhaps a couple of blankets for use on the beds in warmer evenings, when duvets are too hot.

Thank you for your review. We're very sorry you didn't have good weather whilst in Boscastle, we know how that can affect your stay. We will definitely consider your suggestions, we want everyone to enjoy Boscastle as much as we do. Thank you Property Owner

We`ve been coming to Boscastle for a number of years and have stayed at various cottages, one of which we had as our favourite (staying there 6 times). We`ve now decided that Pencliffe is our favourite and we will be coming back again this year. The living room is lovely and cosy; we loved settling down on the sofa with a glass of wine – while the fire was flickering away. Bliss. We loved everything about Pencliffe and can`t wait to get back to Boscastle again.

One problem was no were to hang wet swimwear so also as there for 2 weeks hard to wash and dry cloths area great for walks and surf all in all a good holiday.

I’m glad you had a good holiday. There is a Sheila Maid in the kitchen over the radiator and is a very efficient and there is also a clothes airer under the bed in the downstairs bedroom, we find this adequate for drying clothes. The heaters are all thermostatically controlled and used correctly should provide sufficient background heating, we have provided detailed instructions, in the welcome pack, on how to use them. • "Lovely cottage, however there were some defects such as door handles with screws sticking out and dodgy lights in the living room."

We noticed many other residents had made these same comments in the visitor’s book for several month prior to our stay but nothing had been done to resolve these issues before our stay. Quite dark when inside as cottage is virtually built into the hillside so having the lights on is must if bad weather and when the lights in the Livingroom don’t work it’s very dark inside.

Thanks for your comments. We do provide contact details at the property for our management company who would have been only too happy to help. We were under the impression that this had been dealt with and have already contacted the management company to ensure the handles and lighting are rectified as soon as possible. This quirky property is a 19th century building which is built into the cliff and has a lot of character. There is also occasional lighting at the property to enhance the overhead lights. The cottage was clean, well equipped and comfortably furnished with lots of character and thoughtful touches. There is a well stocked Spar shop two minutes away in the village. The Wellington Hotel is just across the road and we had a lovely meal there. There are other pubs, cafes and a chip shop in the village. There are loads of beautiful coastal and countryside walks accessible from the cottage without having to drive anywhere. We also visited 5 different beaches nearby, the nearest being only a ten minute drive.
