  • "Well I won't book there again ."

There was a lot of do and don't a bit skimpy on the tea /sugar/ milk when we arrived. Bedroom very cold and damp. All my clothes were damp.and dint like the idea where they have a door on to the cottage that leads on to there's.

Thank you for your review, which I have to admit surprised and disappointed me. In 18 years we have never been accused of being skimpy on our welcome 'goodies'. We supply tea bags, coffee, sugar, fresh milk and, in addition, homemade-style cookies and chocolates. When guests bring pets we provide dog treats as well - which we did for you even though you did not appear to have booked to bring your two dogs. Our do's and don'ts relate to things like reminding guests to respect the fact that we are on a septic tank system and not to put things down the loo or sink that might potentially block it. I have stayed in cottages myself and I don't think our information list is at all out of the ordinary. The cottage is not damp and, whilst we do have a dehumidifier, in the summer (as we point out) this helps if the weather is damp, to dry towels etc. We go out of our way to be as helpful as possible and it is a shame you did not raise any concerns directly with us at the time. The interconnecting door is locked at all times and only ever opened with our guests’ permission. The fact that the studio is attached to our main house is fully detailed on the website if you choose to read the description. That door is used by our cleaner when she does the changeover and the studio is separated by two storage rooms and is therefore very private. Property Owner

A pub, the Miners Arms was a stones throw away and served good food. Close to St Agnes and its lovely beaches. There was good walking along the nearby coastal paths and the property was conveniently located so that it was easy to reach the South Coast and St Ives. I would highly recommend it as a base for exploring the area.

Shower needs replacing. Upstairs warm but downstairs very cold even with heating on.

Thanks for your feedback... I am not sure what is meant by 'shower needs replacing' as it is a perfectly functioning rain-head shower and is clearly described as such at the top of the property listing summary. We have tested the pop-up plug in the basin and can only assume it may not have been fully depressed. With regard to the heating, we offer guests complete flexibility over the timing of the heating controls. We always explain (both in the cottage 'manual' and verbally if/when we meet guests - as we did yourselves), that the thermostats on all radiators are pre-set at 3 - it gets very warm in the upstairs living area (where the main thermostat is located) and so that main thermostat may need turning up for the bedroom radiator to come on - and that rad can always be turned right up. Guests have different requirements in terms of levels of bedroom heating and the individual thermostats allow for complete control. The hallway and bathroom rads are also thermostatically controlled. We have never had any complaints about heating before - guests generally comment on how cosy it is overall. Property Owner

  • "The property , although beautifully presented and very well stocked with all home living needs, proved to be unsuitable for elderly people with mobility problems."

Lounge and kitchen were upstairs and bedroom downstairs which resulted in my wife painfully negotiating them more than once each day. The owner was very welcoming and friendly, offering any help we needed. A cautionary note by Sykes for elderly / limited mobility clients would save any future misunderstandings.

Thanks for your feedback Fred. It was a pleasure to meet you both. I'm happy that you loved the cottage in all other respects than the stairs concerning your wife's mobility issues. We do try to be clear in the Property Description (re steps etc.) but I have passed on your comments to Sykes and they have now added a line, at my request, in the Property Summary to reflect this. For any future guests reading this, there are 5 wide stone steps down to the property from your own private gate and, once inside, 11 wide wooden steps up to the living area and kitchen. Both the bedroom and bathroom are downstairs and immediately adjacent to one another. Property Owner

  • "This is an ideal place to stay for two people."

Whilst compact, it has been designed extremely well, making the most of the available space. And the kitchen was well equipped which was great for us as we like to cook most evenings. The owner was very welcoming and friendly. The local pub was excellent - good food and friendly staff. Whilst no parking available at the property itself, there is an arrangement for parking in the pub car park where there was always space and only a few yards down the road. So never a problem. This is certainly a property I would happily return to if we wanted another holiday in this area of Cornwall.

Thank you Sally for your lovely review. We have tried to make the Annexe as much of a home-from-home as possible and so it is always appreciated when guests find it so. :) Best wishes, Rebecca Property Owner

  • "Very disappointing!"

This is not a studio, it is an annexe at best! We booked a weeks stay for 2 adults and our 2 dogs however, we returned after 4 nights. The property has an adjoining door to the rest of the house, which the owners like to use!! This we found to be a real invasion of our privacy. You can only have access to the WI-FI if you sign an agreement and share information regarding the devices you wish to use it on, if you do not sign then the owners turn it off! Regardless of the fact that Sykes advertise the property as providing WI-FI There are lots of do’s and don’t s which again you have to sign a document to say that you agree to. One of which is to take all of your recycling with you when you leave. The bathroom is in need of work, there’s lots of rust on the towel holder, the soap dispenser was dirty and rusty, the shower door was broken etc. etc. We have contacted Sykes on two occasions to discuss the matter however, we have not had a response.

Response from Sykes Cottages: Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments, which are in stark contrast to previous feedback received about Mithian Cottage. The property is clearly described as a 'studio-style extension to the owners' own residence' in our listing. Your booking was for two adults only, however we understand that your two dogs did accompany you on the booking and you liaised with the owner directly in relation to payment for this. With regard to the adjoining door, the owners are extremely careful not to use this at all when guests are staying in the property as they wish to preserve guests' privacy at all times. This door was used once during your stay, with your express written permission, to add items making the property dog friendly and the owner knocked on that door a second time when you had not returned the Wi-Fi form more than 48 hours after being asked to do so following your arrival. The owner did not enter the property on that occasion. The Wi-Fi agreement is in place in case the authorities ask the owners to provide them with information regarding any incident traced back to their network. It is not a legal requirement, but guests have always been happy to sign this. As the owners were told by you that you had no need for the WiFi, it was turned off for around an hour and then turned back on again. Similarly with the check-out procedures, the owners find guests are agreeable and understand why these procedures are in place. With regard to the bathroom, this has recently been redecorated and we understand that the owner was not aware of any issues until after your departure. These issues will be rectified. You contacted our Customer Relations team on two occasions: following the first conversation we awaited photographs that you wished to share with us, but these were not received. The second conversation we understood was purely to log your complaint, no further actions were requested by yourself. Property Owner

  • "Hi Whilst the venue is in a great location, the description is a little miss leading."

The "Cottage" is not a Cottage it is an adjoining annex with an internal connecting door: The owners who live in Mithain Cottage are charming and helpful. However, on arrival, they describe the “cottage” as a studio. It is neither Cottage nor Studio it an Annex. The bedroom is located downstairs and is very tight for space, indeed one of us ended up sleeping on the sofa bed upstairs in the living room most nights as the bed is a small double to say the least, although I’m not the smallest of people. Overall, the venue was Ok for week, but it would have been claustrophobic in the tight space for more than a week. The other issue was roadside parking, it is against other holidays / lived in properties and we were asked to park in the pub car park 50 meters away no issues here as the Miners pub is great. Would I stay here again , for me it’s a no, we were expecting a Cottage, with a garden etc, not an two down -one up annex.

Thank you for your feedback. I have reviewed the description on the Cornish Cottage Holidays website and, in fairness, I do not believe we have been misleading and all the issues you have commented on were well described in the existing property information. The first paragraph describing the property is very clear: 'The studio-style extension to the owners' own residence, a pretty stone cottage, features reversed accommodation offering seclusion and comfort' This is exactly what it is. :) Again, the size of the bed is overtly described as a double (4'6) bed - we would not wish to mislead in any way and I think it is important to provide clear information in order to manage expectations. The bedroom is angled and a larger bed cannot be accommodated - otherwise, it would have been. All our guests are welcome to park directly across the road when there is space...but as the property is on a corner leading into the village, and there can be many cars looking for parking nearby, we have an arrangement whereby our guests may park more safely in the pub car park without any need to use the pub (although most do as it is a lovely pub with great food!). I also repeat this information in my welcome email to our guests. There is a small private patio area (also accurately described) that basks in the afternoon sun complete with a pretty table and chairs. I am sorry that Mithian Cottage Studio was not exactly to your liking but it may be that you did not read the details carefully enough. I do hope you enjoyed your holiday nonetheless. Property Owner

The location is great, and the village pub has the best staff we’ve ever met, plus the food and atmosphere are really good. The bed is a standard double, about which we were aware, and comfortable. However, the sofa in the sitting area is dreadfully uncomfortable. It’s a sofa bed and the seat and back cushions move so that we had to rearrange them all on a number of occasions. A firm, two seater sofa would be a great idea. Minor jobs required include both kitchen and bathroom taps which are loose, as is the toilet seat. The very pleasant owners told the to let them know if anything needed to be done, but we didn’t feel these were sufficiently problematic to interfere with our holiday.

Having said that it is in a lovely location and in easy reach of the many fabulous beaches and coastal walks and all the attractions the area has to offer. The only real downside was the bed as it is a small double and this is not noted and my husband is 6ft 5 so posed a bit of an issue but also the bed was very soft so I got little sleep and spent much of the night on the sofa. The listing states a shop is in the village but this was not open at all so if you needed supplies you had to drive. The pub was excellent and provided lovely food and drinks. Whilst the owners were welcoming, the accommodation and facilities within were sadly tired and in need of some TLC. The studio is very compact which we expected however it was not particularly clean and attention to detail throughout was lacking. The shower door was broken and the freezer compartment in the fridge was sealed with a message that it could not be used, information available at the cottage for days out etc was dated.
