  • "The Old Post Office was a decent base for our family break."

I wouldn’t class it as outstanding if I’m honest. Yes the decor is nice and in keeping with a coastal theme. But it does feel a tad tired. Like other posts you will experience noise from the cottage above and sometimes from the Chinese next door. It didn’t deter our stay. But you need to be prepared. And perhaps not choose this cottage if you want complete silence. As it’s child friendly I do recommend more plastic cups, plates etc for those who are travelling with your children. It would be nice to have a better welcome pack, rather than a boxed with mixed bits and bobs. Felt unwelcoming. Also a toilet roll holder in the en-suite would be great. It was a bit awkward. Overall I’d give this property 3/5. It’s a great base for everything on the door step in Porthleven.

  • "Having read some of the reviews a couple of weeks before we went we were a bit apprehensive about our stay."

But everything was good and we really enjoyed our stay. Our only criticism was the noise from the upstairs flat which was irritating at times. Perhaps carpet could be laid upstairs which might help with the noise issue. Although we enjoyed our stay we wouldn't book again because of the upstairs issue, indeed we have already booked a property nearby for next year. Regards Chris.

  • "Parking at a local public car park is recommended but even though we stayed in September we found parking impossible some days and costly!"

There were 4 teaplates 1 of which was chipped. 4 dinner plates 1 was badly chipped. 4 mugs 1 chipped. It is also next to a Chinese takeaway which on occasion was noisy. Worse was the noise from upstairs. There are wooden floors and every step and conversation can be heard.

  • "This was our second visit to the old post office."

We love the location and area of the old post office . Tge attention to detail was not the same as our first stay . The property was a little tired compared to our previous stay 2 years ago, cracked floor tiles , marks on carpets, marks on sofa’s . Bedroom 1 smelt musty /damp . The bathrooms were lovely and clean as well as the kitchen . The log burner was unable to be used as kept filling the room with smoke, so we were unable to use wood purchased. Previously this was already in the property. I also had to clean the glass before attempting to use. We had to purchase cleaning equipment, additional toilet roll, to keep the property clean during our week stay. Previously this was all available . We were disappointed that we were unable to adjust our stay by one day even though the property was empty without having to pay £71.00. Hopefully you will address these details as we would love to return.

  • "A great property in a central location in the village."

A couple of minutes walk down to the harbour. We go down to Porthleven a couple of times a year, so know the village well. Lack of private parking is the only downside with this property, and what would stop me booking for the summer, but in the low season this isn’t an issue as the nearby Kittos Field car park always had space. The apartment was very comfortable and well equipped. A small chest of drawers in the front bedroom would have been useful as there was no storage apart from the bedside tables. As other reviews mentioned in the guestbook, there is noise from the upstairs apartment, not the fault of the guests but you can hear every step on the floor - maybe some extra rugs are needed to deaden the noise? The heating in the apartment is very unusual, radiators are mounted on the ceiling in the living area and on the walls in the bedrooms which are designed to look like art prints. It was fiddly to adjust and get right throughout the apartment as there are separate controls for every single room. We would definitely come back to the Old Post Office for a low season break & are considering Rock Pool House for summer 2025.

  • "I was hugely disappointed with this booking for two reasons: 1."

I am serving in the Army and in Jul 23 having booked the property to return home to see my Family I was told I would be required to be on duty over the period of Christmas and thus attempted to reduce the length of my stay by two days.Given that this was 5 mths prior to the booking I assumed there would be some flexibility on pricing and yet I was advised this was not the case and if I cancelled I would love my deposit which was excessive and therefore I could not afford to, 2.Having paid a MASSIVE premium for the Christmas week booking I was astounded to learn on enquiring that there would be no Christmas decorations in the property - the explanation being that the Owners did not live locally and therefore could not put a Christmas tree up for us!,,What an absolute joke. The owners probably don’t live locally as all these holiday properties are owned by non locals but the cleaner obviously does! So having paid hundreds of pounds more for the Christmas week for myself and my Daughter there was no sight of a twinkly light or bauble…I think this is outrageous frankly.I stay in Porthleven most christmases as am at home visiting family from the Army and every property via Aspects etc has made the effort to decorate for Christmas. I shan’t be booking this property or via Sykes again It’s a complete insult to people who use their hard earned cash to support local tourism…

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave your feedback, we are very sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your stay. On the first point, we're sorry that you felt it unreasonable that amending the length of your stay didn't result in the price changing. As we hope you will understand on reflection, the length of the stay you still wished to occupy the property for covered the entirety of the popular Christmas period and the same changeover costs are incurred regardless of length of stay. On the second point we apologise for the miscommunication as although the owner is not local, the property is managed locally and that management team can certainly arrange for it to be decorated for Christmas - we are so very sorry that you were advised otherwise. We do hope though that the special Christmas welcome pack, including mince pies e.t.c was enjoyed and that you overall had a happy time at The Old Post Office. It's our genuine hope you will reconsider as we'd welcome you back in future when we hope we'll get everything right for you. Property Owner

Furniture has moved in main bedroom, showing mould in the carpet now. Stains on sofa cushions, marks on other furnishings. We will 100% try again next year, as we love the area and are attached to this property, but it is sad to see it go down hill each year. Also, for the first time, the people upstairs were so loud. Maybe we came at the wrong time of season, as usually stay in May with no issues but chose October this year. Prices for next year are definitely overpriced given what the property is now looking like, no work has gone into it since it opened for stays.

It’s a delightful accommodation with all necessities only lacking a garden space. The location of the Old Post Office is excellent in all aspects. Suggestions: To owners - it’d be advisable if there were a frying pan with a lid. To Sykes Cottages - adding info re parking is vital as it can become awfully frustrating to find parking nearby. The best parking spot would be just up the non-central narrow road leading to a cemetery. Thank you

  • "Whilst the property is very well presented with comfortable beds, quality bed linen and in a good location we did experience a few issues."

There are now mirrors in the bedrooms as previous guests have requested, however the one in the back bedroom is very small and was too high. However, the main issue is that we had to keep the blind down in this bedroom as the apartment above has steps that pass the window meaning that the occupants could see directly into the bedroom whenever passing, a one way blind like to ones on the lounge and front bedroom is definitely needed! Also a blind on the back door is needed, on one occasion I had just had a shower, luckily I was wearing my bathrobe, as just as I came out of the bathroom a strange man, who turned out to be the barber from down the road, had appeared at the back door, he had apparently gained access by lifting the gate latch through a hole, this was most embarrassing! However the main issue was the HORRENDOUS noise from the apartment above, which was almost non stop when it was occupied, at times it was so bad that we thought there was an aerobics class being held up there!!The ceiling/floor needs soundproofing as it became unbearable at times, forcing us to stay out far more than we would have under normal circumstances. We did think the apartment was lovely in other ways but the lack of privacy and the excessive noise would prevent us from booking the Old Post Office again.

Thank you for your feedback and we are delighted you enjoyed the superb location and interior presentation. In response to your experience we have fitted a privacy blind in the bedroom (the same as in the lounge and front bedroom) and also added a blind to the back door, we are sorry they were not in place during your stay. We have added rugs to the upstairs apartment to reduce noise. We hope you choose to return to Porthleven again to enjoy the fantastic restaurants, harbour and beach. Property Owner

  • "It's a beautiful flat."

The location is perfect. We enjoyed reading the history about the old post office. It is clean and the beds are very comfortable. We appreciated the welcome pack, including tea, nice coffee, biscuits, washing up sponge, bars of soaps, laundry washing powder and washing machine tablets and the information left. We were surprised to find team towels too as it asked to bring your own. What we didn't expect is the coffee machine shown on the photos, to be put away as not possible to use it. It looked on the advert that not only it was part of the rental accommodation but few capsules would be provided with it. I think we were glad not to have to use the heating, but I'm sure we would have worked it out with the instructions. The only not so positive thing is the internet connection. The BT box is nowhere to be seen, which made us believe we were connecting on someone else's box. This also because it is very easy to loose it and find out you are on 4G/5G when you are in the flat, but, passed 10 pm, you definitely loose the connection, meaning if you are watching something on Netflix, Iplayer etc... and haven't finished your program, you will have to wait until the following day. We felt if providing such level of quality and a smart TV with a variety of access, including for your phone, it shouldn't be so restricted. But really, it was a very enjoyable stay.

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your stay, though sorry that you experienced difficulty with the WIFI on occasion. The property is supplied by Business Broadband with unlimited WIFI, supplied by an optical fibre direct to the house and is backed up by automatic 4G which only activates in the event the fibre connection is down. Therefore, we assume our broadband provider was experiencing issues during your stay or undertaking maintenance. We apologise for the inconvenience as we were not made aware of this and are following up with the provider. The WIFI router is located centrally in the property above as both properties (The Old Post Office and Rock Pool House) are available to rent together to accommodate 9. When both properties are rented together the rear courtyards are opened-up to enable free-flow between both properties. We hope you choose to return to Porthleven in the future to enjoy this delightful area of Cornwall. Property Owner

Thank you for your feedback. The heating can be controlled within each room from wall thermostats, with quick-reference cards available in the console table. About the location

PORTHLEVEN

Helston 3 miles; Penzance 10 miles; Hayle 11 miles; St. Ives 17 miles; Falmouth 17.5 miles.

Porthleven is one of south west Cornwall’s hidden, coastal gems, located near Helston, famous for it's annual Flora Dance Festival. Situated between Lizard Point and Land’s End, Porthleven retains the feel of a traditional Cornish fishing village, enjoying uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean and the beautiful Cornish coastline. The iconic clock tower sits on the harbour entrance and the pubs, shops, cafés and restaurants cluster around the historic picturesque inner harbour, where there is plenty of boating and marine activity. With a warren of streets lined with classic Cornish, granite cottages, an extensive beach manned with lifeguards, the chance for alfresco dining in one of a number of well reviewed restaurants, and crabbing off the harbour, there are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy, all year round. Porthleven is building a reputation for eating out with a popular food festival established in the spring. Out of season, Porthleven has one of the best surf breaks in the country where you can sit down and get lost for hours watching the energetic surfers riding the waves. There are some fabulous hidden coves along this stretch of coastline, including Praa Sands, Poldhu Cove, and Rinsey, a magical setting for the more energetic. You may have even seen pictures of Porthleven on television, being one of the best spots in the UK for storm watching, with the crashing winter waves often being used as the backdrop to weather forecasts. Walkers will enjoy the South West Coast Path, adventuring west past Rinsey Head with spectacular views, or south across Loe Bar to Penrose Estate with it's National Trust cafe, and on to Gunwalloe Church Cove.
