  • "Most important thing I'd like to mention, as a warning to others: do not shut the toilet door or you will be locked in, unless you have had the foresight to bring a screwdriver in with you."

Could be quite terrifying, especially for a child or lone traveller and needs sorting out immediately. This, I now see, was mentioned in a review on booking.com in May 2024. Second thing, despite check out time repeatedly advised to us by email as 10am, the cleaner arrived at 9am and then we received a phone call from Sykes telling us we were at fault by failing to leave by 9am and arguing the toss with me. Whatever happened to "the customer is always right"? We stayed here last year and were happy to book again, as generally it is a good property.

  • "We were happy with our stay at Enderleigh but, in reality, this was largely due to the fact that it was nice weather."

We also had friends staying in a house nearby so we did not need to spend much time there. The location of the property is great and so convenient. The property was clean and fresh when we arrived and the check in instructions were very clear. Kitchen is well equipped/stocked. Fridge is not big enough to store more than a few bits, which was fine. We used the freezer box to cool drinks to free up the fridge space. Some things, however, have been mentioned by several previous reviewers and have not been fixed - door handle on the landing cupboard and the shower door, for example. The property is very small. This published information is somewhat clear on this but we felt that being a party of two adults (5ft 7 and 5 ft 1) and a seven year old, we could not have envisaged enjoying our stay had we had a second child with us or had we been taller/bigger. The property has a three seater sofa which should indicate that it is not suitable for accommodating 4 people and believe this should be made much clearer. Our seven year old slept on the top bunk in the second bedroom on the first night but banged his head on the beam so wouldn’t sleep in it again. I would estimate the clearance between the top bed and the beam running across could not be more than about 40 cm which is tiny, even for a child! Unsure what we would have done if we had been travelling with two children. We would also like to make the owners aware that the property next door is undergoing works at the moment and the drilling which was ongoing on for a substantial part of the afternoon of Saturday 24th August and between approximately 6-7.30pm daily during the week we were there impacted our stay considerably unfortunately. I have timestamped videos of the drilling on different days should you need to see it.

  • "On the positive side the cottage was clean, well decorated and well furnished."

It is also in a very good location. Before we begin on the real issue which affected our stay (heating) I would just like to mention some minor issues. 1) MIRRORS - There is one wall mirror in the shower room. Also a small movable full length mirror. There were no other mirrors although there was space for one in the lounge, one in the hall and also in each bedroom. It would have helped to be able to comb your hair when the shower room and the only mirror is in use. 2) WARDROBE FACILITIES There were no facilities for hanging clothes,(wardrobes) whatsoever, and I had to hang my clothes on the end of the bunk bed the small room. There would have been space at the bottom of the bunks for a small wardrobe. Or even a hanging rail. In the double bedroom there were pegs on the outside wall for hanging but the wall was damp/wet. Clothes handing there became damp and had to be moved. (See more below regarding this particular wall) SPACE IN SHOWER ROOM - The access to the sink in the shower room could be difficult for larger residents. There is only about a 12 inches between the shower and the wall and its difficult to get past the shower to the sink unit. THE MAIN ISSUE WAS THE HEATING We were without heat from Sunday evening/Monday. This lasted for the whole of the week. The radiators were cold all over the house. The electric boiler had stopped working. We had numerous telephone calls to the letting Agents,. (Sykes) and also Pure Management - a number given in the Welcome Book. We also left messages with the owner on the telephone number provided in that book. There was never any direct response from the owner. We tried for two days with the other numbers but they were either unresponsive or unhelpful. I spoke to Sykes Cottages once earlier on who said that the wall heater was showing 23 degrees. (It was but that could have been due to using the electric heater we had had to buy). The only people involved who I spoke to positively were Pure Management, who were trying to speak to the owner but not having any response. They eventually left a message to say the owner had finally contacted them and authorised for someone to look at the boiler on Wednesday evening (he didn't) or Thursday morning. He did come early on Thursday but he was expecting a gas boiler and the boiler in the cottage is electric. He was a gas boiler man/plumber. So that was a waste of time. He confirmed that he could do nothing, but mentioned several parts of the boiler which he felt needed repair. He said he would pass this on to the Management/owner. As mentioned above we had to buy an electric heater to keep warm, moving it around the cottage, It was far from satisfactory. As above, in the double bedroom the exterior wall had some pegs to hang clothes on. However that wall was extremely damp, and actually wet. Consequently, clothes placed on these hooks became wet. Further along the wall near the window on the same room there was black mould and the curtains were damp. The cushions on the window seat were wet. I have photographs which I will send separately. This is a cottage in a very good location, and should have been perfect but I think the heating issues and the poor response to solving them, marred out visit, if not resolved would mean its unsuitable for occupation in the winter. The thermostat in the lounge which showed at 23 degrees when we arrived, gradually decreased, when we weren't using the electric fire and on leaving read 15 degrees on Saturday morning. Mostly being at 16/17 degrees prior to that. I am feeding similar information to Booking.com,. Trip Advisor and St Ives Tourist Board. I will also be writing to Sykes Cottages separately and attaching photographs.

Thank you for your feedback, the cottage was clean and functional when you arrived, the thermostat is set to 18 degC by default. You have set the thermostat to 32 degC during your stay. After property visits by both a plumber and an electrician, the boiler was not functioning properly and we offered a full refund should you have chosen to shorten the stay for that reason but this was declined. The guests have plugged in an electric heater without acknowledging the owner for the rest of the stay at full power. After departure our housekeeper reported shocking property conditions - very bad mould on walls and fixtures, furnitures because the property wasn't vented for the whole week. Specialist plumber reported the internal fuse in the boiler was gone probably due to overriding safety settings. I apologise that your demand for a future free stay for another week has to be declined. Property Owner

  • "Good location and adequate for 2 adults for a week."

We had all we needed downstairs. Main bedroom was fine, very comfortable bed but otherwise rather squashed. You need to be able to get through an 18 inch space to access the bathroom. No wardrobe for hanging clothes, only pegs on the bedroom wall. The toilet seat was loose, as was the tap on the bathroom basin and the upstairs cupboard door had a handle hanging by only one screw. Our biggest problem was having to vacate the property by 9am on the day of departure. This meant we left a day early and caught an afternoon train home. So glad we didn’t come by car as the parking arrangements are a long way from the property and we weren’t made aware of this when booking. Also, what size is a medium sized car? Dimensions of the parking space would be useful.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We have made arrangements to change the check out time to be 10am. The dimensions of the garage size is included in the message sent to guests before arrival. Property Owner

The bus up and down to the carpark where we parked our car was so convenient.. We didn’t use the free parking as it was too tight for our car, it is only big enough for a small car. It would have been better to have had a washing machine than the dishwasher as being there two weeks it would have been more useful. You don’t need a dishwasher with only two people. The iron was good but no ironing board so had to use a towel and iron on the table. Overall a lovely place to stay.

  • "We have just had a lovely week at Enderleigh."

The cottage is lovely and the owners have left a very helpful welcome pack and a lovely bottle of wine (& milk for tea) on arrival! The cottage is in the perfect street - very close to everything, yet not very much traffic comes down at all making it nice and quiet. We stayed with our 2 children age 9 and 12. The second bedroom is very small, but as long as you know that when you book then that’s fine. One thing that we were a tiny bit disappointed about was that the photos show a washing machine which would have been far more useful than the dishwasher that has been put in its place. On closer inspection we realised that the property details do say ‘dishwasher’ - but that’s not what the photo shows. Overall we had a wonderful week and would highly recommend this lovely cottage!

Thank you very much for your feedback and we are so pleased you have enjoyed your stay at Enderleigh! Really sorry about the washing machine, as we have recently replaced it with a dishwasher according to the feedbacks from our previous guests. There is actually a launderette 3 minutes walk away on the North Ter(B3306). We will make sure this information goes into the welcome pack. Thanks again for staying with us and we look forward to receiving you again if you are visiting St Ives in the future! Property Owner

  • "We really enjoyed our stay here."

It is an old, very small cottage which might not suit everybody. The location is excellent; 5 mins from harbour & 2 mins from shops. Doorways are 2 feet wide by 6 foot tall. There is a 'squeeze' of 1 foot wide past the shower to get into the bathroom. The 2nd bedroom is only really suitable for 1 or 2 small children. It is great that there is now parking included (25 min round trip) But it is only for a small car. We have an old style Clio which only just fitted without folding mirrors. The actual size should be put on house info website to prevent people with medium sized cars from being disappointed. We would happily stay here again.

Thank you very much for your review and we are really pleased that you have enjoyed your stay at our cottage. The newly refurbished private garage is 2 minutes drive or 10 minutes walk from the cottage. The garage is a standard single with entrance door max height: 1.99m (6’6”) max width: 2.22m (7’3”). We can get our Q5 into the garage without the mirrors folded. We look forward to your visiting again in the near future. Property Owner

  • "There was no welcome pack so dealing with the heating was difficult."

Would have liked to have been furnished with a j cloth for wiping down surfaces. A shelf in the shower would have been useful and a extractor in the toilet would again been useful. For 2 adults and two small children would be okay but if renting for 4 adults that would have been very very cosy! on the good side location was very good although no parking facility.

Thank you very much for your feedbacks. There is definitely a welcome pack in the cottage with all instructions (normally in the entrance hall) . Our apologies if the house keeper hasn't made the welcome pack obvious to been seen. Property Owner

  • "This property was very disappointing."

First thoughts upon arrival were that it was small, as we had expected, but so small that certain things should be highlighted more. For instance a grown adult can barely squeeze into the bedroom with bunk beds, which makes it difficult when putting children to bed, the ceiling is so low in this room that my 5 year old banged his head numerous times on the beam above the bed when sitting up. Also, the space to walk between the shower to the sink in the bathroom, if you are above average size you would not get through the gap. The second bedroom with the bunk beds had no curtains so the only way we could block out light was to stuff a pillow in the gap, absolutely ridiculous!! How do you expect children to sleep with no curtains??? The only mirror in the property was a mirror over the sink in the bathroom!! No full length mirror nor a mirror near a plug socket, so the whole time you stay here you will have to dry/style your hair using guesswork! Good luck with that! The biggest issue we had was how dirty the property was, as soon as we arrived you could feel the dirt/crumbs under foot in the living area so we hoovered throughout straight away. We started to lay the table for food, but as we did there were still crumbs/sugar old food all over the placemats from previous guests, again I cleaned all this before we could use the table. The next morning I came down stairs and the kitchen was teaming with ants, we cleaned them up and had to throw away some food that was part opened as the ants were all over the food. That night the ants were back and again we spent ages spending more time cleaning and trying to remove them all. We called the managers and explained, told them it was dirty but all they said was they would send out someone to look at the ants, which they did the next day but as we had removed them they were not visible but the maintenance man did leave ant powder. I showed him the photos I had taken of the ants the day previously. The bathroom was also filthy with hairs all over the cupboard and what looked like sick stains on the wall by the sink. We decided to just put our toiletries on the window sill as I didn’t want to have to spend yet more time cleaning the cupboard! The view from the windows were of damp and mouldy walls of the property opposite with very powerful mould smells in the bedroom at night. There were also damp patches on the ceiling on the stairs. The smell from the drains and when you open the door to the storage cupboard where the Hoover is in the lounge was awful! Another point to note is there is no wardrobe! A small cupboard with 2 shelves above the stairs, but that’s it! The only good point was the central location. I would never return and would not recommend this property.

We regret that you didn't throughoutly enjoy your stay in our cottage. In response to your comments we would like to make the following notes : 1. You have checked yourselves in early and refused to let the housekeeper in, who was fetching tools from her car, despite being told that the cleaning was not completed. This could have also contributed to the ant incident, which has never been complainted about before. 2.The property has been throughoutly renovated early this year. There should be curtains in the second bedroom as shown in the photos on the website. There has never been damp issues as the cottage is south facing and there is always plenty of sunshine through the windows. Our property manager will investigate further and if there has been damages during the previous guests stays, we will ensure that is fixed. 3.We apologise that the upstairs of the cottage is compact. We have a double sofa bed in the lounge with spared beddings just in case any guests feel uncomfortable in the second bedroom. These have been detailed in the welcome pack and made explicit on the website. 4. We have a big cupboard on top of the stairs, another in the main bedroom, storage ottomans as well as two big drawers under the double bed. It might not be abundant but should be sufficient. 5.The cottage shares the backwall with a restaurant kitchen at the back. There could be some smell of food leaked in the downstairs cupboard at some specific time. However with the cupboard normally closed we have never smelled anything in any part of the cottage. At the end we are pleased that you have enjoyed the central location of our cottage in St Ives! Property Owner

Ives yet quiet even in peak season. A few steps away from the Main Street and a minutes walk down to the sea with a choice of beautiful beaches within 10 minutes walk. Loved being able to go to the beach and walk back wrapped in a towel. Lovely little cottage. Ideal for 2 adults or a small family. Beautifully decorated and clean. Basic kitchen equipment but ok to cook a quick meal. Help at the end of a phone in the occasion we had a question regarding rubbish. The upstairs is compact-certainly no complaints from us but I wouldn’t recommend it to people requiring more space-the narrow opening to the shower room would not suit someone of a larger build or mobility needs. No parking but we pre-booked St Ives secure parking at the top of the hill and had a space for the week which worked well with a nice walk to get there and back. Fantastic holiday in St. Ives-would highly recommend and look forward to returning once there is availability to book again! Many thanks.
