"A nice cottage, but there was a lack of storage so everything had to be left out."
We reported the freezer compartment broken on the first day and was told that it had been reported to the owners, so could not use it.
The cottage advertises as being dog friendly but they are only allowed in one room. A suggestion would be to put more netting on the garden fence to make it more secure for the dogs. The garden pod desperately needs some attention.
All in all we had a lovely stay in a wonderful location despite a few niggles.
Thanks for the feedback, it is appreciated. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay.
With regards to the storage, it is a very small cottage with limited storage space, albeit some space in cupboard and draws. Guests are welcome to use the shelves in the kitchen to store items, and also the left hand cupboard under the stairs has some storage space.
The freezer is usable for now, albeit needs repairing. I am on with this. Unfortunately there is a design floor with the freezer compartment and it has broken/been repaired previously.
Dogs are allowed in the downstairs open plan living area/kitchen/dining area, just not in the bathroom or bedrooms.
I guess if you have very small dog they could sneak under the fence, but in the main the garden is dog friendly
I am looking at replacing the garden pod very soon, I know the poor weather has taken its toll on it. It is usable, but nearing the end of its life I know.
Thanks again for the feedback

"This was our second stay at this property, the first being in June 23, as it is in a lovely location for a rural escape."
Whilst we enjoyed our stay we were disappointed to find a lack of maintenance issues still outstanding e.g the door on the freezing compartment was still broken and the outdoor structure is definitely in need of major repair or replacing altogether. The wood is rotting and it is still infested with tiny red insects/beetles.We were pleased that we took our own garden chairs to sit on as none are provided, apart from the precarious benches on the wooden structure.
There were a few other minor issues all of which have been noted by others in the visitors book.
We have used Sykes cottages several times and have always been impressed by the standard, facilities and welcome packs provided by the hosts but unfortunately we were disappointed this time.
Thanks for taking the time to give the detailed feedback, it genuinely is appreciated. Apologies for the issue with the freezer door, it had been fixed previously but has been broken again (bad design I think), I will look to get this sorted asap, thank you for the heads up. With regards to the outdoor furniture, feedback accepted, we did look to replace this year but couldn't find anything similar/appropriate to replace with so put on the backburner for next year. I will review the condition of it and look to try to resolve sooner rather than later.

"This really is a lovely little place to stay; for a small holiday let the living space is really comfortable and feels spacious downstairs."
The only issue we had was the bathroom, the light didn’t work but hopefully that will have been rectified now. It’s worth noting the sloping ceiling is very low, I’m 5’8 and my head touched the ceiling so would be uncomfortable if you are taller. You can’t stand up for a shower which is fine if you are happy to have baths although the water pressure is great so it’s a shame there’s no shower. The beds are really comfortable and the kitchen is really well equipped. The garden fence to the road could do with sheep netting along it, as it’s not secure for curious dogs. The garden structure has started to rot so is not stable but there’s no outdoor table and chairs which was a real shame as the views from the decking are incredible. A bit of TLC and this would be a 5 star accommodation.
Thank you for the thorough feedback, so pleased you liked it. Apologies regarding the bathroom light, it appears to have randomly blown during your stay, now sorted.
Totally agree on the sloped ceiling, I'm 6'3! But it is manageable once you have walked around the house a few times.
I'm currently reviewing the garden area of the house, so will bear your feedback in mind.
Once again, thanks so much for the feedback.

"Positives about the property are the remote quiet location, having parking right outside is a bonus."
The kitchen has all the amenities you could possibly need. Comfortable large sofa and log burner. Although this is a lovely property there are a few things that could be improved. On arriving the house was cold but unable to start a fire as no kindling had been left for us. This is usually something owners provide get one going the first night you arrive. It should be noted that dogs are not allowed on the furniture (dont know why people say dog friendly?) I completely understand the not upstairs part but not allowed on the sofa?! Anyway to finish off the issue was the water pressure. Now only informed on reading this in the book that it could fluctuate not beforehand we had terrible issues to the point you couldn't even wash as it was flowing out the tap as a trickle. Although once informing the owner we had an issue and it was fixed we were already pretty much coming home. I feel some sort of compensation should have been offered as we were having to fill the bath up from downstairs. We got lucky our dog didn't need a wash! Also there was a lot of hair (human and dog) in the bedroom bedding as well. For this reason we wouldn't stay again.
Thank you for the thorough feedback, it is much appreciated. Huge apologies regarding the kindling, you are correct, we do normally provide this. Out of respect for the guests that stay at the property without dogs, we do not allow dogs on the furniture, this is correct. With regards to the water pressure, your issue was not normal, there was a fault with the system. Thank you for noting that this got quickly repaired, we encourage all guests to report any issues/queries immediately as 9 times of of 10 we can resolve quickly to avoid disturbance to your stay. Thank you for your note regarding the bedroom bedding also, I will review this with the housekeeping team, as not an issue we have had previously.

"What a great little find."
Perfect cottage for a quiet and relaxing getaway and the dogs loved it. Everything we could possibly need, very well equipped! Actually preferred not having wi-fi as gave us a real break from work emails :) loved the local area and visited Bude, and Lydford Gorge. Perfect weather too which was lovely. Would highly recommend for a couples get away. The cottage is done out to a very high standard and is very cosy and comfortable. The log burner was divine and made the cold clear nights warm and homely-logs and kindling supplied which was a nice touch. Found some lovely walks nearby and as a runner some lovely, if hilly routes that really take in the views. 5* all round.
The only thing we commented on was that to just finish it off perfectly it would be nice to have some photos or pictures downstairs, may e of the local area/scenery to just finish it off, but cannot fault the cottage in any way and this did not detract from our enjoyment of our stay.
Thank you so much for the thorough and detailed review. So pleased you enjoyed your stay, and some great recommendations here for other guests.
Great feedback on the photos/pictures downstairs, I will discuss this with the housekeeper.

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, such a lovely place and so comfortable."
An issue with the TV having no signal the first night but this was rectified very quickly which I was grateful for. A great location to explore Devon and Cornwall and nice and quiet for my 2 dogs. I would only suggest a floor lamp by the sofa so the main lights can be turned off to make even more relaxing. I will be returning for sure next year, it was one of the best places I’ve stayed in.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback, it really is appreciated. Apologies again about the TV, and I'm glad we could resolve quickly. That is a great suggestion regarding the floor lamp, I will discuss this with the housekeeper, and see if we can get this added to the house.

It has been fitted out to a very high standard. The downstairs gave us absolutely everything that we would need or want. The only issue for us was the bathroom which because of the sloping ceiling made life a little awkward. This is shown in the photographs so no deception.
My only other comment is that whilst there are loads of power sockets there is not one near to a mirror for hair drying, or a mirror near a power socket. But seriously I would thoroughly recomend, it is delightful.

"Last minute break, we realised as per accurate description bathroom had no full shower."
Rest of the property made up for this, very clean, lots of thought gone into providing, condiments, tea, coffee, dishwasher tabs, foil, and 2 disposable barbecues and welcome treats for dogs. From the photos you can see there is a gate to garden and dogs were secure and loved the space. I would definitely say property is dog friendly, I have never stayed anywhere that allows dogs upstairs or on furniture we take their beds and they were well settled. The refurbishment of the stable is tastefully done, and was a perfect base for exploring Devon and Cornwall. We all slept very well. Bed upstairs amazing, I normally miss my bed, but this one was exactly the same, a good decent mattress. I was a little worried that someone had mentioned about fleas previously, but did read other reviews before booking. I am very fussy, the stable was very, very clean. I would 100% recommended it, for us on network 3 didn't have a good signal, which is a bonus, we chose to stay in the middle of nowhere to switch off. Therefore, a lovely quirky building, perfect for dogs and a small family, in the middle of nowhere, to recharge your batteries. Thank you, the Davie family & Paddington & Yogi Bear.

I apologise for the issues during your stay. We did contact you on the 15th March on the mobile number you provided to offer a refresh during your stay, but we didn't get a reply.
I checked with the housekeeper whether you had made contact about any of the issues, and she confirmed she didn't receive any communication from you. If you had contacted would have been able to resolve issues for you.
The housekeeper checked the house post your visit and there is no sign of fleas. We have never had a flea issue, and always received exemplary cleanliness feedback from guests. Being that the house is in an agricultural surrounding, we do get flies and other natural insects that try to stay in the house with you, but if windows are not left open with lights on, food areas kept free of crumbs etc, then this avoids the extra residents coming to visit you.
If you do come and stay again, please immediately contact the housekeeper with any queries/issues and we will get resolved immediately. Regards Downicary Chapel Stable

"Lovely cottage."
Much larger than it appears on the photographs. Excellent facilities, there wasn’t anything I wanted that I couldn’t find. The bedroom was cosy and very comfortable. The garden would be lovely in the summer, it’s a shame it was too wet for me to sit out for long as the views are beautiful both front and rear. There were lots of pretty walks directly from the cottage, many around the lanes so you can still go out, if like me, you choose a week of torrential rain - I didn’t move my car until the Wednesday!
If I was being really picky I would suggest the sofa is reorientated in the room as at no point on it can you sit and face the log burner.
Would definitely stay again.

"We booked through Sykes but found the property on ‘Dog friendly cottages’."
Although the property is beautiful, with outstanding views, decorated beautifully and has absolutely everything you need, we didn’t think it was very dog friendly. Firstly dogs aren’t allowed upstairs, our dog at home is, so we had to put chairs in front of the stairs to stop him getting up there, a stair gate would have been easier. Dogs are not allowed on the furniture, our dog at home is so it made it a bit of a nightmare trying to keep him off. The garden can only be reached via the front door to the side where there is a gate, so if you have a dog that will chase anything, ie, rabbits, foxes etc you have to pop a lead on them to get to the garden. A stunning place but in our opinion not dog friendly.

Excellent finish inside. Had everything we needed in kitchen. Loved the wood-burner. Location was very peaceful. Parking ample. Garden great with lovely views.
CONS: It is in the listing's description, but we missed the fact that there was no wifi. Not the end of the world for looking up stuff online as 4G was fine, just would have been nice to use our Firestick to watch some films in the evening. Instead we had to watch TV, which I hate! Lots of flies from next door farm coming into house. Bathroom is tiny with slanted roof, very difficult and uncomfortable if you're over 4ft tall! Worst of all, mattresses were awful and desperately need replacing, especially the downstairs bedroom single ones. Lumpy springs and when knelt on, the mattress compressed so much that my knee touched the base of the bed (I'm only 80kg!). I had to sleep with a duvet on top of the mattress to get any sleep. Thankfully it was warm enough to do so, but would be horrible in winter.
All in all, it is a lovely cottage. I would stay again if they replaced the mattresses.

Great location for privacy but still close enough to visit local areas and beaches.
Couple of suggestions for the items needed:
• A washing line and an airer (although stated there actually wasn’t one available)
• Outdoor furniture as the pod (although lovely) is inadequate for a family bbq
• A DVD player
The only issue we really had was upon arrival we noticed the previous tenants rubbish/waste was overflowing and had not been collected. We had to look at this each time we went to the garden area and had no room for our own waste/recycling. This also attracted bugs/insects and animals close to the property.
In the end I had to bag all of this waste and place outside the property for collection on the Wednesday but this never happened.
Other than that we had a fantastic week and would very much book again through Sykes Cottages.
