  • "We spent two nice weeks at Pencoys."

A new cooker was delivered. When we arrived there was milk in the refrigerator, also eggs, potatoes, cookies,… thank you very much! Everything (except small details like windows frames) was clean and we felt very comfortable. The shower is new, very large and very clean. After a week we received new towels. For foreigners like us, it would have been useful to know how the garbage is seperated in the shed. The different bags are there. Thank you again very much for the lovely time at Pencoys.

  • "Every summer in the last seven or eight years we have stayed in Cornish Cottages holiday lets in Mullion."

We book again and again because of the high standard of the properties which, we assume, you at Sykes also inspect regularly to ensure your high standards are maintained. We have always really enjoyed staying in CC properties. This year, however, we stayed in Pencoys, Glenmoor Lane via Sykes. Individually the issues below are not particularly worthy of comment but, taken together, are indicative of a neglected, poorly maintained property. The property is in a less than satisfactory state. • None of white goods were adequate – the casters on the dishwasher trays and during our stay the dishwasher stopped working altogether; two of the hobs on cooker were not working; the fridge light was not working and the fridge is clearly near the end of its life; the washing machine needs servicing – it did not washing clothes very well; • There had been amateur efforts to cover up the mould on the bathroom walls, ceiling and window blind. There has been no effort to deal with the big patches of mould in the living room (above the French windows) • The decoration hasn’t been refreshed in many years • The kitchen window needs replacing as the double glazing seal is broken and you can’t see through portions as it is obscured by water. The DG seal on the twin bedroom window has also broken • The soft furnishings in the living room are past it - especially the armchair where the cover is in a particularly poor state • Battery needs replaced in kitchen clock - clearly not been working for some time • Several of the gutters are blocked by large bit of turf! • There were virtually no clothes pegs and those that remain broke as we tried to use them as the plastic was so old – and the rotary dryer doesn’t turn because of it overgrown with vegetation • Several of the plates, bowls and glasses were chipped and the crockery was so old it looked like it had come from a charity shop • The chopping board was dirty and stained – it needs replacing • The sun shade with the table on the back patio not secured so it is unusable • The dining table mats are sticky – not clear of this was from age or poor cleaning The housekeeping is carried out by neighbours who are clearly not able to provide a professional service: • Some of the towels were musty, smelt unpleasant (the neighbours do the washing, not a professional service as set out in the information provided at the cottage) • Although we had booked two weeks there were no toilet cleaning or other cleaning materials – especially poor for a summer let (we have never stayed in a let where no cleaning materials were provided) • There were no replacement kitchen bin liners • There was no hand soap of any kind - not helpful on arrival • There were bit of food in the cutlery draw and a couple of the plates in the cupboard were encrusted with food • The vacuum cleaner is in desperate need of a service – does not work well and leaves a smell of dog! • In other CC properties there is always a welcome of a cream tea/hand-made biscuits/bottle of wine. Here there were just a couple of packets of Tesco’s own brand biscuits – frankly, better not to bother The owner, it seems, is happy to take our money but unwilling (or unable) to maintain the property to an acceptable standard. The property did not represent value for money and we think we are due a refund of some of the cost – 25% seems fair recompense. When we raised these issues with the housekeepers/neighbours there was little they could do (we did get replacement towels on our last day, they provided some cleaning materials and, apparently, the white goods are being replaced as a result of our comments). They spoke with the owner who asked us to get in touch via you, as our agent, to discuss further.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We can confirm that the cooker and dishwasher are in the process of being replaced. We would also like to mention that all light fixtures, cleanliness issues, repairs, and replacements have been made in relation to the comments made here. The rotary drier dryer is in good working condition, and the sunshade with patio table is secure. As usual, there is a starter pack available with essential products, and updated instructions available in the welcome book. Property Owner

  • "The property was well maintained and well equipped, including quite a few nice touches that were unexpected."

It was a pleasure to stay there. Giving more feedback below to help make it even better. A few suggestions: - Need to provide better instructions on how to use the oven. It is a relatively complicated model. - There were cars parked in the road leading to the house twice during our visit, blocking the way. Letting you know about this nuisance behaviour from strangers. - An extra frying pan would be helpful - Some instructions on how to use the washing machine would be useful. It is a bit of an old model, and wash settings are not obvious. - An outdoor tap, or footwash arrangement, in front of the house would be handy to avoid tracking in sand after beach visits.

  • "The good points are comfortable beds, quality linen, very good shower."

Well equipped kitchen. The location was quiet but as said in the information the non made up road is in a terrible state. Over all the property the needs a paint job and some TLC. The T V is small and very old, remote needs attention. The fore court needs a tidy up with dead plants in pots and weeds, the back garden was private with grass cut.

  • "Thank you for a lovely stay, the house was really well situated and walking discount to everything we needed."

We travelled with our 20 month old twins and found the place ideal for the whole family. The garden is lovely to sit and relax in but isn't the most practical for little children to play in as the shrubs are very bushy and not a huge amount of grass. We spent most of our days out at the beach or in the local park.

  • "Quite frankly this was a miserable and alarming experience, made worse by the complete lack of meaningful response from Sykes Cottages."

Despite contacting Sykes during my stay to report a catalogue of issues at the rental property, they have refused to do anything. Issues included equipment not working, unhygienic facilities, seriously uncomfortable bed and lack of privacy. Three days into my stay I looked out of the rear window and was alarmed to see a man wandering around the garden. He remained for nearly 2 hours, effectively stopping myself and my dog from using the garden. No explanation, no apology. Two days later I returned to the house to find that someone (presumably an agent of the owner, but who knows ?) had been in the house, including upstairs. I had left my laptop, purse, tablet etc in the lounge. No permission had been sought or explanation given. This is quite appalling. I have stayed in numerous holiday places. This was the worst I have ever been in. I was highly relieved to get out.

I had read reviews about the lane, need not of worried the lane is fine for all cars, few divets watch where you drive. Chocolate shop, local pubs and fish and chip shop are all worth a visit but boom first ad very popular. Mussels amazing at the Mounts Bay Inn. 3 beaches/coves to choose from a hidden gem where we will definitely be returning with our pet. Nice to have caretaker up the road who was around if you needed him. 10 out of 10

The Lane is bad, even for an unadopted road! My local council provides road chippings free of charge, it might be worth the owners approaching the council to see if they do the same? The stair gates were great, I set them up at the bottom of the stairs and to the living room, so it kept the dogs on the hard flooring only, they were crated at night anyway. Could do with some oven proof dishes eg Pyrex to cook with, other than that, lovely comfy, relaxing house, would book again.

  • "Nice property in a great location for exploring western Cornwall, however the garden is overgrown and not tempting, the parasol is broken, the microwave is from circa 1970 and is very low powered, the TV is small and there is no second TV for kids/gaming etc."

the beds are very cheap and uncomfortable, you can feel all the springs and the bedding is the cheapest available, we had to buy sets of pillows just to sleep. The decorations are fair but in places are in need of a refresh particularly in the house bathroom. The driveway/private road to the house is so badly potholed that I would not have wanted to use it with my last car, and had to put my range rover on high suspension setting, for £100 of crusher run shared among the houses on the street this could be fixed.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are glad you found the property to be in a great location. We will shortly be cutting back the shrubs, when the flowers have gone. The Tv with Sky is in good working order and there are no plans to replace this. We do however have plans to upgrade the bathroom at some point in the near future. In regard to the lane as mentioned previously, driving at a low speed is recommended and sign posted accordingly. Property Owner

  • "We arrived and it was very cold."

No heating inside for over 24hours. Couldn’t contact the owner or housekeeper! Issue finally resolved by a handyman. A neighbour then decided to just park on the drive making it difficult for our learning disabled adult with mobility issues to negotiate the drive and on the final day the cleaner arrived at 9.30am and wanted to start cleaning! Facilities were ok but could do with some updating! It was nice to have a whole house though. Enclosed garden for the dog was good. The property is in a good location but we probably wouldn’t stay there again.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are sorry that the property was cold, this is because the boiler had been serviced the day before and the engineer had forgotten to turn it back on. As you are aware, my handyman attended as soon as possible to rectify this. Guests should contact Sykes/Cornish Cottage Holidays if they encounter any issues at the property. Apologies that our neighbour parked on the drive, he was not aware that the property was occupied. The housekeeper did arrive a little early on this occasion and once she knew that you had not left, she retired until you did. Property Owner

Good base to explore the far end of cornwall. The private unmade entrance lane is a bit of a challenge but as long as you take it carefully (and slow) you can get in and out ok. Easy walk to village with several good pubs, supermarkets and other small shops. Nice fish and chip shop although pubs also do good food at lunch times and in the evenings. We had an excellent home cooked sunday roast at the Old Inn. All the locals are friendly and happy always speak - even to us holiday makers. Would highly recommend this place and we would be happy to stay here again.

It’s a shared track and very rutted and has holes that need to be sorted out it’s like a rollercoaster to drive on and not very good at all.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. The track you mention is an unadpoted road which is jointly owned by a number of properties (all need to agree before maintenance can be arranged). There is a 5 mph sign at the entrance so all users of this road should be travelling very slowly. Property Owner
