  • "The property smells musty, particularly the front room and the bedroom downstairs."

In the front room there was mould on the plasterwork around the window and evidence of damp on the rear wall in the bedroom. Our eldest daughter had an asthma attack, which we think was brought on by the mould. Although Sykes arranged for someone to come and clean the mould, we have been told that we cannot be offered any type of recompense, as the issue is a health and safety one. We have been advised to make a claim against the owner, which will take more time and effort. All in all, very disappointing.

  • "We had a lovely week away and we would stay here again due to the location."

The cottage is situated in a nice area, which is central to most towns and easy walking distance to the harbour. The harbor is very pretty, not overly touristy and has a good range of local shops, pubs and cafes. Food and drinks are expensive but that is to be expected for the area. You can also go on some sight seeing and fishing boat trips that run from the harbour. The cottage itself was nicely decorated, clean and cosy, we appreciated the welcome pack when we arrived, which included teas, coffees and scones. The cottage was well equipped but missing a microwave and I would have preferred this to the coffee machine that was there. The single chairs in the living room are not very comfortable and the staircases are steep and narrow and are quite difficult to climb up and down especially if you have mobility issues. The street is also home to the local Seagulls; they made a lot of noise at night and we had to keep the window open as it was so warm, we managed to get used to the noise after a few nights. They also ripped the rubbish bags open on more than one occasion so I’d recommend the owners purchasing a wheelie bin to avoid this ongoing issue in the future. Parking was also an issue; we only managed to park once within close proximity of the cottage and the street is narrow where some tend to double park so it was sometimes difficult to drive through. Be prepared to drive around looking for spaces and to walk from wherever you are able to park to the cottage; however it was never more than a 5 minute - 10 minute walk and luckily we had dry weather.

We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at Crooked Cottage and that you liked the location of the cottage. Regarding rubbish, a wheelie bin for rubbish, and recycling boxes, are provided. They are located on the pathway outside the back patio, just through the garden gate. All general information such as this is provided in the folder on the coffee table in the sitting room. This also provides information about the area, restaurants etc. And yes there are seagulls ..but Porthleven, like other Cornish seaside towns, doesn’t come without them! Property Owner

  • "The cottage could do with a microwave rather than a coffee machine."

Otherwise perfect. Exceptionally clean and well presented in a quiet street within easy walking distance to the waterfront

  • "After staying at this cottage in February and having 2/3 days without heating or hot water, I complained to Sykes."

The property smelt musty, probably due to the amount of rain and lack of heating. The property had not been cleaned properly, pine needles left from Christmas tree in the lounge area and down the stairs to the kitchen, very dusty on the bedroom floors and crumbs on kitchen floor. Sykes seem unable to manage customer complaints. I have stayed in many Sykes properties Sykes customer service on this occasion is terrible. I will say that the cottage is situated in a great spot, for visiting Porthleven and that overall the standard of accommodation was good, but our holiday was spoiled, so would not be able to recommend.

  • "A lovely cottage for our autumn visit - beautifully appointed and we made great use of the wood burning stove!"

Great location too - walks around Porthleven and only a quick drive to places like Penzance and St. Ives.

About the location

PORTHLEVEN

Helston 3 miles; Penzance 10 miles; Hayle 11 miles; St. Ives 17 miles; Falmouth 17.5 miles.

Porthleven is one of south west Cornwall’s hidden, coastal gems, located near Helston, famous for it's annual Flora Dance Festival. Situated between Lizard Point and Land’s End, Porthleven retains the feel of a traditional Cornish fishing village, enjoying uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean and the beautiful Cornish coastline. The iconic clock tower sits on the harbour entrance and the pubs, shops, cafés and restaurants cluster around the historic picturesque inner harbour, where there is plenty of boating and marine activity. With a warren of streets lined with classic Cornish, granite cottages, an extensive beach manned with lifeguards, the chance for alfresco dining in one of a number of well reviewed restaurants, and crabbing off the harbour, there are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy, all year round. Porthleven is building a reputation for eating out with a popular food festival established in the spring. Out of season, Porthleven has one of the best surf breaks in the country where you can sit down and get lost for hours watching the energetic surfers riding the waves. There are some fabulous hidden coves along this stretch of coastline, including Praa Sands, Poldhu Cove, and Rinsey, a magical setting for the more energetic. You may have even seen pictures of Porthleven on television, being one of the best spots in the UK for storm watching, with the crashing winter waves often being used as the backdrop to weather forecasts. Walkers will enjoy the South West Coast Path, adventuring west past Rinsey Head with spectacular views, or south across Loe Bar to Penrose Estate with it's National Trust cafe, and on to Gunwalloe Church Cove. Take a trip to the Isles of Scilly by boat or plane and marvel at the display of sub-tropical gardens at the stunning Tresco Abbey. The Eden Project near St. Austell offers an interesting day out. Porthleven is the ideal base for discovering the delights of west Cornwall and the Lizard Peninsula.
