  • "This is one of those properties that is even better than the listing makes out!"

I booked this property for a celebration of my 30th birthday and we had a great time. I noticed some other reviews mentioning that the property wasn't clean, but we did not have that experience. A beautiful property with lots of comfortable communal areas, great bedrooms, and great countryside surrounding. The drive way is a real squeeze for three cars but there looks to be more parking available on the street. About 15 mins drive from Chippenham station, and less than 10 minutes from Lacock.

  • "We arranged a family get together to celebrate a birthday and had high hopes for this accommodation."

Unfortunately there were several issues with it which were so disappointing. On arrival we found there was a large number of bothersome flies in all the upstairs rooms, particularly in the window casements. In one bedroom there was a huge number of earwigs. There were also a lot of cobwebs and a musty smell throughout. Overall, the house did not feel clean. The oven was absolutely disgusting. There were masses of different pots and pans but no microwave cooking dishes. The hot tub had been warmed for us which was nice but the area around the hot tub could have been so much more pleasant. Also the hot tub had a leak so we could only use it one day. The conservatory was a big bonus and a pleasant room but unfortunately it leaked. All in all, it seems that this very quirky house has much to offer but definitely requires vast improvement and rigorous cleaning and maintenance.

  • "We recently stayed at this property, and unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations."

The biggest issue was the cleanliness. For the price, we expected much better standards in terms of cleanliness and responsiveness. I would not recommend staying here unless improvements are made.

  • "Good location with enough space for our extended family to stay close to a wedding venue."

The maintenance of the property both inside and outside is very poor. The downstairs bedroom had a terrible smell making its use very unpleasant (probably from a large rug). On arrival the general cleanliness of the property was poor with cobwebs and spiders present in most of the bathrooms and living areas. A disappointing feature was the overgrown garden. The patio areas were covered in tall weeds and the “lawn” was overgrown and there was a large amount of animal poo on it. A visit from the gardener was mentioned in the information documents but this didn’t happen. Another unexpected problem was the driveway which was quite narrow but easy to access the house. However turning round and leaving was a massive problem for the 4 largish cars we had. Sadly we cut short our stay in the property and left after 2 nights there.

  • "The night before our arrival we had read that the property was not very clean and there was a smell in some of the rooms ."

I would like to say this was not the case for us. The property was clean and tidy and was very welcoming . The lovely touch of biscuits and bread was very nice. There was everything there that we needed . The beds were so comfortable and plenty of hot water . We loved the hot tub too. The conservatory was great as it had bi folding doors which let the outside in. The only criticism was we had the gardeners Saturday morning early and we were not told they would be there but apart from that everything was good.

  • "A really lovely and beautiful cottage."

We loved the conservatory and was perfect to enjoy with the nice weather. The hot tub was lovely however the hot tub area could be maintenance better, the old exercise bike was a bit random and lots of Amazon parcels stacked up on the side took away from it abit. The outdoor space was great and lovely to have, The utility room had a weird smell to it smelt like wee? So this could be looked into. All in all we had a lovely time and would come again!

  • "We had a lovely weekend at 9 Velley Hill as a family of 12 adults (3 generations)."

The property had everything we needed for the weekend and was clean overall. The shower pressure was good and beds comfy. What made the property for us was the conservatory with the large table which gave us the space to have dinner together and spend time together - this is where we spent most of our time during our visit.

Thank you very much for these comments. We always have a wonderful time at Gastard for family gatherings and I love it to give pleasure to other groups. Property Owner

  • "The house was not clean."

The level of dust and hair was not just oversight it just had not been cleaned in every room.. The kitchen is well equipped . The sitting room inadequately furnished for any comfort over 2 people and there were 12 of us. The conservatory saved the experience. It was really frightening when a rotten window frame blew off and another window handle had been left untepaired before our visit. The house is amazing. Quirky and large. The garden is messy...paving stones, rubble, clutter and mess just left. No information on where to leave rubbish. The cleaner had left wheelie bins at the end of the drive that blew open and spilled in the road repeatedly. We had to keep gathering it all and putting bins upright again. The house itself is awesome. The maintenance is not good enough. The window frame piece fell directly onto the path in front of our eyes...it was pure luck nobody was underneath at the time. The cleanliness needs addressing. The downstsirs bedroom was thick with dust and cobwebs and spiders. Something was in the bed and caused abrasions to my shoulder and back on the first night. Such a shame as the house is brilliant in size and intrigue. And dituated in a great place.

  • "The lounge areas were dirty, had not been vacuumed for probably weeks, the bedrooms were poorly cleaned and the areas under the beds may never have been vacuumed as far as we can see."

There were cobwebs everywhere. No wood for the wood burners, told afterwards wood in the shed, what shed?? 5 of our party have become ill after using the jacuzzi, we are raking legal advice for next steps. Avoid this property at all costs. Sykes seem happy to pass on all any any liability to owners, owners appear not to care.

  • "Property was lovely & a nice place to say with a large group of people."

Lots of room for us to all hang out. The main problem was a dreadful smell in the downstairs bedroom, which did not get better even with the window left open. It was a very unpleasant room to sleep in for one of our party.

Very cosy and homely .lots of space .very clean . Hot tub clean and temp perfect. Only issue we could not use bottom garden as grass to long and previous renters left dog mess. But put that aside great location great property.

  • "I reported a problem with the property cleanliness."

The dishwasher was disgusting and there were spiders and cobwebs throughout the property. There was no toaster which was a major issue for us. Nothing was done about it whilst we were there so overall we were disappointed with our stay.

  • "We had several issues: 1."

Cleanliness - whilst the bathrooms were clean, the rest of the living spaces were not cleaned to acceptable standards. Some of the bedroom linen felt damp and mouldy, the one bedroom in the loft had dust coming off the ceiling onto the bed. The downstairs bedroom had a consistent smell that could only be partially managed by opening the windows. Spiders and cobwebs all over the house 2. There was a water drip from the ceiling in the kitchen when the shower in the room above was used. There was also a drip in the living room which landed on the metal table...generally a dark and dank room. 3. We had the fuse blow in the conservatory on our first night - informed Sykes, no response received, no emergency number to call in the information file. The kitchen, conservatory, utility room and the outside spaces made the property livable. We appreciated the excellent collection of books and curios.
