  • "The property is very well equipped, not sure I can think of anything that was missing, and in a beautiful location."

We were greeted by the owners, who were lovely and gave us directions to walks etc.. The large fully enclosed paddock was perfect for the dog. There are many walks from the property including my favourite, along the canal to the village, stopping at the post office to buy freshly baked cakes! It was a perfect break.

The property

This delightful cottage is set in the grounds of the owner's cottage in a rural location near the canal side village of Great Bedwyn on the Kennet and Avon Canal.

The cottage has been lovingly and imaginatively converted to create holiday accommodation of a very high standard in beautiful Wiltshire countryside.

On the ground floor are a superb fitted kitchen and an impressive sunny conservatory sitting and dining room with views across the owner’s three-acre paddock, woodland and impressive countryside.

There are two bedrooms on the ground floor, plus the ingenious use of space has meant that the spacious and luxurious master bedroom suite has been tucked into a space on the lower ground floor.

This room benefits from a further sleeping area with a sofa bed, as well as an en-suite shower room, all cleverly ventilated by full warm and cold air conditioning.

The cottage has its own private patio area as well as shared access to a three-acre paddock, a wonderful area for exercising the dogs.

Just a short walk takes you to the tow path of the lovely Kennet and Avon Canal, where you can walk for miles admiring the colourful narrow boats as they leisurely chug their way through the picturesque Vale of Pewsey.

Locally, visit the Crofton Beam Engines, the world's oldest working beam engines, which regularly hold 'steam up' days, when visitors from far and wide come to admire the magnificent machinery.

Take the short drive to Savernake Forest and spend time strolling along the forest trails or enjoy browsing the antiques in the Hungerford Arcade.

The nearby historic town of Marlborough is just a short drive away and offers a vast array of interesting shops and restaurants.

Should you tire of all this, then drive to regal Bath or ancient Salisbury, both of which are easily accessible.

A superb, rural Wiltshire escape at any time of the year.

Where you’ll be staying

GREAT BEDWYN

Marlborough 6.5 miles; Hungerford 6.5 miles.

The charming village of Great Bedwyn is set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Wiltshire. The village boasts good local shops, a Post Office serving fresh bread and sandwiches, a pub and a main line railway station. It is situated on the banks of the Kennet and Avon Canal which gently winds its way through the picturesque Vale of Pewsey, providing peaceful walks along its tow path; whilst a canal boat trip from Pewsey Wharf or the nearby town of Hungerford is a must. Close by is the 200 year old Crofton beam engine, the world's oldest working beam engine, which was built to pump water up to the highest point of the canal, and the regular 'steam ups' attract visitors from all over the country. A visit to Savernake Forest which borders Great Bedwyn is not to be missed, where over 2500 acres of unspoilt woodland has been preserved, and is an ideal spot for picnics, country walks and cycling, as well as being a haven for wildlife. Within an easy drive is the impressive town of Marlborough, with one of England's widest high streets. Also close by is the stone circle at Avebury, or browse the numerous antiques stalls in the colourful Hungerford Arcade. Take a day trip to the magnificent cities of Salisbury and Bath, visit the Great Western Museum or Longleat Safari Park. Wilton Windmill, the oldest working windmill in the Country and Littlecote House, a famous, haunted stately home, are also within easy reach. There's so much to do and see in this interesting area.
