"This property was very disappointing as there was a lack of basic facilities, such as clothes horse (there was a washing machine), a tin opener that worked, dustpan and brush and basic microwave oven."
It should not be assumed that everyone knows how to use an induction cooker. A set of do's and dont's ought to be provided. eg cleaning of the top should be done using a cloth dampened with a little CLEAR water only, otherwise the top will not "induct". Incidentally, the drying function on the washing machine does not work. It does wash and spin, but the use of the drying function prompted a message saying something like "maintenance required". Also I do feel that the proprietor should make a point of speaking to guests IN PERSON, preferably when they first arrive and ouline what I have called "Do's and Dont's" at that time. Do not assume that everyone is familiar with the technology provided. On the plus side, the owner did respond to our calls, visiting the property on the same day. However, her intervention had mixed results. After her departure we found that the television worked, but the sound had gone, and no amount of efforts by ourselves would restore it. The beds were warm and comfortable.
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed. The owner advises that they do provide a clothes horse, a working tin opener and a dust pan/brush. Appliance instructions are in the welcome folder. We are sorry that you did not find these. Please do check the property listing for larger amenities provided in a property. We are pleased that the owner was able to visit in order to help you. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

"Although a small property it has many facilities packed into it, such as a dishwasher and washing machine."
It is decorated and furnished to a very high standard and perfect for a couple. It is ideal for hikers as very close to a number of walks over various commons with great views. Stroud centre is only 20 minutes walk away and I would particularly recommend the Saturday market. The car parking space is very close by. This is definitely one of the best properties I have rented. Only drawback would be it is on a steep hill which may be a bit of a problem for some. But it does make for good views from the property and its outside seating area.
Thank you for your lovely feedback. We are delighted you had a lovely stay at Butterrow Gate and had a wonderful break away with us. We would love to welcome you again for another stay in the future. Kind regards Manor Cottages. Property Owner

"Lovely property overall, great location for local walks."
Having a tv was nice and it was nice opening the stable doors into the outdoor area. I also didnt think the propertywas small at all, as other reviewers mentioned, for instance the bathroom was quite long, shower was very powerful, lounge was fairly large. Only things I would have liked would have been a microwave and some sort of artificial grass in the outdoor area, as my dog wouldn't do his business out there. Also found the bed slightly short.
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We have passed your suggestions onto the owner for consideration. It is helpful to hear what guests would find useful. We are pleased that you liked the property and enjoyed the local walks with your dog. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

"We had a lovely week!"
The cottage is so beautifully and tastefully furnished & presented. We enjoyed the Stroud Saturdays farmers market, the slaughters , Tetbury & Cirencester etc. I have read ‘Cider with rose’ and loved visiting Slad and seeing the ‘Woolpack’ Laura Lee’s stomping ground!

"Overall very nice, but for us a little too small for us."
Thank you for your feedback, we are glad that you found the property nice, albeit too small for you, and that the cleanliness and facilities met expectations. Hopefully we can welcome you back to the Cotswolds in the near future. Kind Regards, Manor Cottages Property Owner

"A wonderful little gem!"
Really enjoyed my week. The cottage was beautiful and very well equipped. The walk into Stroud was superb along the canal and I managed to spot the otter family on several mornings! So many previous guests had mentioned the Saturday market in Stroud - wow! A must visit for anyone - loads of fresh tasty produce and friendly people.
Thank you for this lovely review which is much appreciated. We're delighted you enjoyed your week and managed to make the most of all the local amenities and attractions. We hope to welcome you again. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

"Lovely stay at Butterrow gate."
Although tiny it has all you needed for a stay. Bed very comfortable and lovely large fluffy towels. Parking is in the road opposite as road outside very busy and small but is easily found and safe. Lovely walks and national trust properties nearby. Kitchen needs a little negotiating but that's the price you pay for this little gem. Cosy evenings in front of the log burner after busy days. View from upstairs garden area is stunning although it was a little cold to use it in March when we went.. if your looking for quirky and a little history and don't mind a little squeeze in the kitchen then Butterrow Gate if for you. Clean, modern with a twist. Of history. highly recommended. .
We are delighted that you had a comfortable stay and enjoyed this quirky historical property. Thank you for the recommendation of the walks and national trust properties nearby. We hope we can welcome you back again. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

"The property was really lovely and very well equipped."
It suited us well as a base for visiting family, friends and places in the area - always so warm and comfortable to come back to. We both feel the cold so the underfloor heating was great and we enjoyed the additional option of the woodburner for extra cosiness. We thought the accommodation deserved its Sykes award!
Thank you so much for this lovely review! We're delighted you loved the property and found it to be so warm and comfortable. We hope to welcome you again. Best wishes Manor Cottages Property Owner

"Outstanding renovation/adaption of original toll gate house on a at times busy road leading up from Stroud to Rodborough Common."
Splendid base to explore and enjoy the local area which has pretty much everything one could desire. Recommended.

"We had a wonderful stay in Butterrow Gate fabulous quality fixtures and fittings so comfortable wanted for nothing."
Loved the area and found lots to do and see. Our little dog found an escape route I spoke with the owner and this will be addressed as it hadn't been mentioned by anyone else. Plan to return. Really felt like relaxed on return to home.
-
"Absolutely stunning property and very well furnished and maintained."
Definitely recommend for a cosy couple of days away for 2. We had a stay of 14 days to support family and I would not necessarily book Butterrow for a long period again due to us having our dog etc. Just different needs for us. However, each couple will decide on their own and it is a fabulous wee place once you rest into it. If you want to hide from the world for a couple of days then Butterrow Gate is for you!!!
Thank you for your amazing feedback, It's wonderful to hear how much you enjoyed your stay at Butterrow Gate. We would love to welcome you back again in the future. Kind regards Manor Cottages Property Owner

"Very enjoyable few days, explored Bath, Cirencester and Bourton on the Water."
Friendly hosts in The Prince Albert and great burgers and beer at The Brewery.
-
"Beautiful cottage."
We have had a wonderful week, fabulous walks. Rodborough Common a must then the ice-cream parlour. Farmers Market on Saturday was amazing and lovely street food from the indoor market. We visited a few places but Cirencester and Nailsworth were our favourite, very pretty. A wonderful enjoyable week.
-
"We so enjoyed our stay at the unique Butterrow Gate."
Everything you could ever need was on hand. We ate out at The Crown in Minchinhampton and The Old Nelson did us proud. We managed to visit Bath, Bristol and Gloucester. We enjoyed watching a game of bowls in Stratford Park and rode on the GWR steam train from Winchcombe to Cheltenham Race Course. A fun filled week for two oldies. Thanks for having us!
-
"We had a lovely stay in a delightful cottage."
Despite being quite small, the facilities were great and Stroud is a lovely place to visit. The weather was perfect and we were able to sit out on the sun terrace and enjoy the view.
We're delighted to hear you had a wonderful stay at Butterrow Gate. The outside terrace is diving in beautiful weather. We'd love to welcome you back. Best wishes, Character Cottages Property Owner

"Expensive for what it is."
Noisy road with no immediate attractions. Nice property but not ideal location.
Thank you for your feedback and taking the time to share your comments. We’re pleased to hear that you liked the property which is indeed furnished to a high standard and has lovely views as described on our website and as featured in The Telegraph. Butterrow Gate is situated on the edge of Stroud which is a very short drive away or a 20 minute pleasant stroll along the canal. The owner leaves recommendations of things to see and do in the area including many pubs/restaurants within a mile of the cottage. With a variety of walks from the door into Cotswolds AONB, National Trust, Rodborough Common a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is behind the house. We do hope that you had an enjoyable Easter break and return to explore the area again. Best wishes, Character Cottages Property Owner
-
"Unique and good property."
Only downside was the property was located on a dangerous junction
Thank you for your comments. We can confirm that the property is not located on a junction. There is a side road close by with access for parking. Best wishes Character Cottages Property Owner

"We really loved this property, it was a pleasure to stay somewhere so unique!"
We loved settling down and getting g cosy with the great log burner in the evenings. The bedroom was beautiful and very comfy bed. It was also a great base for wonderful days out. We would love to stay again one day!!

"We loved this cosy cottage - it's such an unusual property which has been beautifully restored to a very high standard (including having high-end appliances)."
It has all the modern amenities but still retains charming period features. We really enjoyed our stay here and were sad to leave.
Thank you for this lovely review. We're delighted you enjoyed your stay and hope to welcome you again. Property Owner

"A simply stunning cottage with 1st class location and amenities."
The instructions sent via email about how to access the property and where to park could not have been better. On arrival, the cottage was spotless, the facilities were simply superb and the information left by the owners about every question anyone could have had (e.g. heating, working the induction stove, opening the velux windows, local walking routes) was hugely appreciated. Our one quibble was that the house could feel a little damp on an evening, making bedding a little cold initially - we could not quite work out how to increase the heating to offset this (our error I am positive). However, do not let this dissuade you - we would book again in a heartbeat and intend to do so for next year! Five stars - simply superb.
Thank you for providing us with such lovely feedback on your stay at Butterrow Gate. We are so glad to hear that you plan on visiting again and please know that we are available 24 hours a day if you need any assistance with amenities such as the heating, or anything else during your stay! We can't wait to see you again soon. Many thanks, Character Cottages. Property Owner

"Stunning property - beautifully decorated and ideal for a romantic break."
Views from the upstairs windows are lovely on a misty morning. Is on a busy road but we barely noticed and the bed was very comfortable. Well equipped kitchen and great shower-love the electric windows above it that open to the sky. Great base for walks and exploring the cotswolds. Ideal for walkers. You do need to be fit enough to cope with steepish hills. Owners have done a fantastic job renovating, fitting and furnishing. Very prompt to deal with tumble drier issue even if not able to fix it during the stay. You do have to cross a busy road to reach the parking but it is not an issue if you travel light. Would highly recommend a stay at The Tollhouse.
Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay at Butterrow Gate. It's lovely to hear you enjoyed the property and made the most of the lovely walks. We hope you enjoyed the stay and we would love to welcome you back again in the future. Property Owner
-
"Great little cottage which was very well placed and had everything we needed for our short break away."
Would recommend a couple of pint glasses and gin glasses for those who like to enjoy a drink in on the terrace. Also it would be good to have summer weight bedding for the warm summer months. But all in all an absolutely lovely place to stay. And yes we will be back
Thank you for your lovely feedback with regards to your stay at Butterrow Gate. It's really important to us to get your feedback. We have checked with the owner and she has advised that there is a lighter duvet and some gin glasses availalable at the property. She will purchase some pint glasses. We hope to welcome you back again in the future. Property Owner

"Lovely location for visiting and walking"
Pleased you had a nice stay and enjoyed the location. Property Owner
-
"Having read some reviews prior to our break away, a few people commented that the property was smaller than described."
The property is compact but well equipped and comfortable for its size and ideal for a 2 person (+ dog) break. The kitchen area only allowed 1 person to use it at a time, but this was not an issue. The garden patio was well maintained and provided a stunning view over the valley below and hills on the other side. We would certainly recommend it for a break away. The only warning we would give is if you have a dog, beware that the underfloor heating may unsettle them, but each room is controllable through the heating controls and once we lowered the temperature in the lounge our dog was her usual self.
Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. So pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay and you were happy with the cottage and how it is equipped. Brilliant that your dog settled once the underfloor heating was at an appropriate level. Property Owner

"We absolutely loved the layout and decor of the place."
It had some absolutely stunning views and we loved eating our breakfast and dinner on the balcony each day. The only suggestion would possibly be an update in the email on the parking, we couldn’t see which exactly we were supposed to park in other than the sign as there didn’t seem to be the yellow thatched area or red box, so we may have been parking in the incorrect space (our apologies). Other than the slight confusion on the parking, we could not have stayed at a better place and highly recommend
Thank you for the feedback. Amazing to hear you loved the layout and enjoyed breakfast on the balcony. Apologies for the parking confusion. Fantastic you had a lovely stay! Property Owner

"The property was very cute/bjoux, website photographs were 'creative' belying actual size."
Details of parking sketchy, stumbled across our space on a dog walk. Walk to nearest pub mostly on unlit road without pavement. Property situated on a busy steep road, for someone with limited walking (hubby) walking anywhere from Butterow gate out of the question. Just needs this detail in description. However we did enjoy our stay and the property is quirky & historically interesting. We've stayed in many cottages and a welcome pint of milk or something would be nice.
The cottage is in a wonderful location and has so much character. We believe the pictures show the cottage as it is and given it only sleeps two people, the size is lovely for two. You now have off street parking for one car, plus on street parking is still available near the cottage, so this makes it nice and convenient for off loading your luggage. With regards to pavements and street lights, most country villages don't have them, it's a wonderful experience to actually see the stars, but if this is important to you, please advise us when booking and we will try our best to accommodate this request. Again if you don't want to be near steep roads or hills, please advise of this prior to booking, as we could have suggested an alternative, that might have suited your Husbands needs more. The owner does provide tea, coffee, sugar and other items in the kitchen like foil, kitchen roll and lots of other items for guests use, but i will suggest milk to the owner for future guests. We hope you still had a wonderful stay and enjoyed your time spent in the Cotswolds. Property Owner

"Lovely quirky cottage, very beautifully decorated."
We've stayed for 6 nights! Had everything that you need, close to the village and to many walks around. We've enjoyed the log fire on the colder nights. The terrace has beautiful views from the hill, it will be great for a summer stay. Many thanks, Nicoleta and Andy. February 2022.

"We had a cosy relaxed stay at Butterrow Gate thoroughly enjoying the stunning views looking down towards Stroud."
The under floor heating was a winner for warmth within this authentic Cotswolds stone building with stylish accommodation throughout. The cottage is gorgeous- loved the views and the garden terrace .

"Lovely little place, immaculately decorated, especially loved the bathroom and the bedroom."
There was some roadworks going on whilst we stayed there which I think helped with the traffic outside, and never had a problem with parking within 100 metres, regardless of what time we arrived back to the property. Would stay here again, although next time maybe in the summer so we could of enjoyed the outdoor space.
-

We will definitely recommend this place to our family and friends!

"This little stone cottage has loads of character and history, as it used to be an old Toll both for horse driven coaches."
It's immaculate inside and fitted with many mod cons. There is everything you would need to stay completely self contained for as long as you needed. The roof terrace with BBQ, seating and wood burning chiminea is a nice touch as it over looks a beautiful view of the Cotswolds hills. The bed is very comfortable! The local surrounding area has plenty to offer if you like country walks or cycle rides. It's not far from Stroud Town centre with lots of shops and nice restaurants. We ate out at Toni's Italian restaurant which was particularly good!.

The property
Butterrow Gate is an eye-catching property which sleeps two guests, in one lovely bedroom, with a ground floor bathroom.
This unique Grade II listed property was constructed in 1825 as the toll house to service the turnpike road linking Stroud to Cirencester, and is one of the few toll houses in the UK to still have the original wooden toll charges board fixed to the front of the building. An early example of Gothic architectural revival built from Cotswold stone, Butterrow Gate retains many character features including stone mullion windows, exposed Cotswold stone walls, flagstone flooring and a Cotswold stone fireplace with a woodburning stove.
Modern facilities such as wireless internet access, a Freesat TV with DVD player, and underfloor heating complement the traditional features, and there is an elevated patio garden with stunning views. The front door leads to an entrance hall which contains the washing machine and is a useful speace to store coats and muddy boots.
Located off the entrance hall is the bathroom with a walk-in shower, toilet, wash basin and heated towel rail. On the ground floor is the living/dining room containing the sofa, armchair, a drop down wooden leaf table with two chairs and a Cotswold stone fire place with wood burning stove. Completing the ground floor is a small but well-designed kitchen. Stairs lead up from the living/dining room straight into the master double bedroom with an abundance of character features including original elm floorboards, exposed Cotswold stone walls and stone mullion windows, this room has panoramic views of Stroud and the beautiful countryside.
The stable door from the bedroom leads out to the enclosed patio garden, the patio has a small glass walkway, three stone steps lead up to a terrace with spectacular views of Stroud and the fields beyond.
Butterrow Gate is located on the outskirts of the bustling market town of Stroud, famed for its independent shops, galleries and cafes.
Stroud hosts an award-winning Farmers' Market every Saturday, and there is an organic farm shop just a short drive from the property.
The town has a wide range of restaurants and pubs, the closest to Butterrow Gate being The Prince Albert Inn which is dog friendly and often has live music nights. Surrounded by the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with a variety of walks from the front door including onto the national trust 'Rodborough Common, which has spectacular views across Woodchester Valley and to the River Seven on a clear day.
The River Frome flows through Stroud itself and has a pleasant towpath which follows the course of the river, passing by the Stroud Brewery, just a half hour stroll from the property.
Stroud is well placed for visiting the many historic towns of the South Cotswolds, including Painswick, Nailsworth, Minchinhampton and Cirencester.
Further afield destinations such as Bath, Cheltenham and Oxford are within easy reach for day trips.
Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.
About the location
STROUD
Gloucester 9.5 miles; Cirencester 13 miles.
The town of Stroud is known as the less commercial corner of the Cotswolds, a somewhat bohemian collection of buildings, squares and lanes, tucked into the green hills which once housed countless sheep during the town’s time as the centre of the Cotswold’s woollen industry. Today, Stroud welcomes visitors to its friendly cafes, quaint bookshops, independent shops and tempting eateries. Described by Jasper Conran as the ‘Covent Garden of the Cotswolds’, Stroud has a regular farmers' market, year-round programmes of music and theatre, a thriving arts scene and a state-of-the-art cinema. For simply relaxing, Stratford Park on the edge of town offers lakeside walks, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and a museum. Head out of town to explore the five sweeping valleys which surround it, with country lanes just made for walking or cycling.
Note: Logs for the woodburning stove are provided between September and April; outside of these months guests are welcome to purchase their own.
Note: Children under the age of 8 are not permitted.
Note: One small dog at additional cost of £25 per stay.
