"Great location and lovely cottage with charm and history to match."
Would not suit elderly or frail due to very steep staircase.
-
"We really enjoyed our stay at lock house, beds and sofa was comfy."
I know it’s an old property and that’s what appealed to us but a little more attention to the cleaning would be a plus. It’s location is perfect for eating out and exploring the surrounding areas.
-
"Lovely situation, nice to see the lock opening and the boats going through."
Having 2 cars made it tricky driving in and out of the property as so close to the lock. Fresh flowers, milk etc were appreciated. Towels were large and plentiful. Quite a cold house, but it’s understandable as very old. Bedrooms are all a good size. Downstairs shower is very small and slippery, but works very well. Equipped well even had dishwasher tablets. All in all a lovely spacious house, just wish the weather had been warmer.
-
"We absolutely loved at time at the cottage."
The secondary glazing of the front windows meant that the noise of cars crossing the bridge outside was reduced so that it was not intrusive. The amenities were good and the mix of traditional fireplaces etc with a modern kitchen and bathroom facilities gave the best of both worlds. The photos of the sitting room (without the TV) need updating as the furniture has changed and looks better than the photos on the website.

"Very cosy, warm and great location positioned to centre of Gloucester."
As for fogs Garden is perfect and enclosed

"Comfortable character cottage in ideal location on historic docks."
Had everything we needed for our Weekend and plenty of space for us to sit and eat together. Easy walk into centre of city and we noticed some new cafes close by. Recommend it for a stay anytime. Take care getting into the parking area as the gateway is on an angle to the road and cars come both ways along Severn road. Otherwise only improvement I can think of is to have an extra sofa bed downstairs or split one of the doubles to make it more flexible for groups of friends rather than couples.
-
"Location fantastic."
Cottage in need of renovation, but nothing that caused us a problem.
-
"Lock House was in an ideal location to explore the docks and city centre."
It was warm and comfortable, had lots of character and plenty of space for 6 adults. The kitchen was well equipped, beds were comfortable and showers worked well. We had a great few days despite the weather.
-
"We loved the house and the area."
From warehouse buildings to open land. this place has it all. The nearness of the bridge wasn't a problem as the double glazing was so good. Yes the stairs are quite steep, but as an 83 year old, with a new hip. it wasn't a problem. Having a downstairs toilet was great. So many good features in this property, can't wait to return.
-
"Brilliant location: watch the sunset from the garden or pop across the quay for a coffee or a beer."
Generous provision of everything we needed. Perfect for a family celebration but great also for a quiet retreat. Lovely.
-
"This is a very comfortable, well equipped, cottage with plenty of room for 4 adults, and which includes two sitting rooms."
It was useful having double glazing in the front rooms to muffle the noise of cars going over the lifting bridge. The steps going upstairs are steep but we soon got used to them. When we had to contact the owner, he was friendly and approachable. The house is within easy walking distance of town (about ten minutes walk to the cathedral) and the dock development is right on the doorstep. The back garden is quiet and pleasant
-
"Great location and the cottage was very clean and warm with lots of hot water."
However the description did not really indicate that the lounges were small. 6 adults sitting in the largest of the lounges felt very cramped. Obviously owners are not able to do anything about the size of the rooms but this should have been mentioned in the right up. Photographs were rather misleading. Sofas had certainly seen better days along with the towels provided. Ventilation in the bathrooms was not really adequate. With 6 adults using showers there was a lot of condensation and it was too cold to leave windows open.

"Great location in a traditional cottage."
-
"Brilliant location ."
Owner very pleasant and helpful. Property as described. Plenty of space .
-
"Though it suited us I think more information on the location could be helpful - it is on a busy road and access with a vehicle is 'quite interesting'."
The owner was very helpful when we contacted him about a couple of issues. Generally good facilities though king size beds would be a great improvement! Nice picnic bench for lunch outside.
-
"We really enjoyed spending Christmas at The Lock House."
It was very well equipped, with everything we needed for a Christmas dinner. Thoughtful touches added to our enjoyment like the Christmas tree and decorations, a cake and bottle of prosecco. It was the ideal location, a short walk to the Cathedral, city centre and shops in Gloucester Quays.
-
"Lovely quirky old cottage in brilliant location."
All bedding and towels good quality. Lucky enough to have weather to eat in garden two days. Ideal for walking into town, the Quays and the Christmas markets. Not much activity on lock but perhaps wrong time of year. Owners easy to contact and quick to respond.
-
"Great house in an absolutely wonderful location."
The house was as described. Steep stairs and with the canal and river, water all around. Be careful with children. Great Kitchen! There is some noise from the nearby bridge traffic, but it's not bad at night. I've rented holiday homes in the UK for over 20 years, and this is one of the best!
-
"Conveniently placed for Gloucester town centre."
House rooms comfortable. Stairs steep, showers too low. Several doors and locks jam and need repair and improvement.
-
"We had a fabulous time staying at Lock cottage."
It is a charming ,characterful cosy cottage situated on a lock. The location is amazing just by the quays, shops cafes etc and at the side is a bridge over to woodlands and walks to the Priory. The cottage has a back garden which is a sun trap but it also has a front area ,where we watched the boats go by ! Two bathrooms and sitting rooms gave us plenty of space to spread out and relax in. As it is detached, we could enjoy ourselves without worrying about neighbours. The house is near the road so you will hear some traffic as it goes over the swing bridge but it is more of a low hum and didn't bother us plus the windows are double glazed. Finally, the owners left some chocolate biscuits and tea,so we could enjoy a cuppa on our arrival. Many Thanks.

"The Lock House was a perfect vacation home for our family."
The home is beautiful and quiet as well as conveniently located. Thank you so much for sharing your home with our family.
-
"Perfect position to enjoy Gloucester and the area, really enjoyed watching the lock operate and the road rise."
They are so close to the front door. The house is large and spacious with everything you need with hosts who where easy to communicate with
-
"A very warm and welcoming house."
Everything was provided for a short stay. The tea and biscuits were very welcome on our arrival. The house is perfectly situated - a short walk to the city centre and all the restaurants and shops at the docks/quay. Wonderful dog walking fields two minutes from the back door. We would definitely recommend The Lock House and hope to return again soon.
-
"Great Location."
Cosy old cottage. Would definately use again. Stairs carpet needs replacing minor negative.
-
"Overall we had a wonderful stay at Lock House and would certainly like to come again."
The house was warm and comfortable and, while it was superficially clean, there were cobwebs and several areas, (skirting boards and pipework), would benefit from a deep clean which I am sure will happen before the main letting seasons begins. As we have a holiday cottage ourselves in Cornwall we do understand how hard it can be to maintain standards, but we felt that the range of mismatched crockery, cutlery and glassware let the property down. Our son commented that there were more reception rooms than there were Prosecco glasses! We bought 2 ice trays as a gift to the cottage as there were none and no -one wants a warm gin and tonic!
-
"Cottage needs redecoration."
currently most walls and woodwork grubby .pipework in kitchen very dirty and wall opposite microwave has cobwebs.new carpet to lounge and door bottom not refitted so door very difficult to open and close.
Upstairs and half of downstairs rooms were redecorated last winter. Mr Witcher has stayed at the end of the season and some walls have acquired scuff marks in places. These will be remedied during routine maintenance in the new year when the remaining two downstairs rooms will be redecorated. I will step up my vigilance for errant cobwebs. Property Owner

"The Lock House provided us, a family of six with two dogs, a great base to explore Gloucester and the surrounding beautiful countryside."
Great spot for parking and privacy, would definitely visit again.
-
"The Locke is a lovely house full of character."
It’s position on the river Severn is charming, the boats enjoyable to watch passing through. Secure garden for dogs - easy walk in fields behind over the bridge. Half hour to an hour away from some pretty places: symonds Yat where children went canoeing, Burton on the water very charming. The Gloucester quay itself pretty. Did have a little struggle finding places to eat that accepted dogs but ultimately did find and was very friendly (Brewdog). Overall an enjoyable holiday in a character house.

"Excellent location"
-
"A perfect family holiday!"
Great location. Could not have been better. Would definitely recommend to others. We were a family of 5 with 3 teenagers. House was perfect for us.
-
"Walking access to both town and country."
Cosy with real fire. Great for dogs - outside tap + tiled floor in kitchen
-
"I loved staying at this property with my family."
-
"Lovely property in a very unusual location."
Perfect break over New Year! There are so many resteraunts to enjoy in the dock complex, and lots to explore. There was even a winter outdoor ice rink should you feel energetic! Thank you.
-
"The house is in an ideal generously sized accommodation in a great location for central Gloucester."
I would love to stay again.
-
"We loved the size, location and quirkiness of the house but felt it could do with some tlc."
The seals on both of the showers need replacing. The downstairs shower wasn't clean and the door comes off the rails so we never used this one. There is obviously a problem with the pipe work in the upstairs shower as we had to continuously empty the trap (as we were told in the paperwork) but this didn't solve the problem as the shower tray kept filling up. Some of the pillows and one of the single quilts were very lumpy. These items are not expensive to replace but make a big difference to your comfort for a week. The Hoover was packed full so we weren't able to use it. The house is lovely and some small changes would make it very special.

"We liked it so much we doomed it for Chrisrmas"
-
"A beautiful property in an excellent location."
Plenty of room for 5 people. The garden was a peaceful retreat after exploring the Quays and surrounding villages.
-
"We were kept awake all night every night by massive Diesel engine pumps There were 4 of these right outside the cottage running continuously pumping water out of the lock."
And in total 8 including those over the road. I have one holiday a year and look forward to a relaxing time Unfortunately this was a nightmare of a holiday and could not relax in the cottage We will not be booking with you again
Unfortunately this guest's stay coincided with emergency repairs being carried out to the lock in front of the house. The repairs are now completed and tranquility is restored Property Owner

"We loved our stay at The Lock House, lots of space and very comfortable."
Short walk to the Quayside where there are lots of interesting buildings, places to eat and shops.
-
"We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Lock House."
We were a little freaked out by a man coming across the bridge to use the path around the house as a short cut but it only happened three or four times while we were in. The house and grounds were a delight and we would highly recommend it to everyone.
-
"Great location!"
A home from home and perfect for pets too! Thoroughly enjoyable! We would visit Gloucester again :-)
-
"This was a lovely cottage and perfectly situated for what we wanted."
Clean and had everything you needed Will be booking up for next year
-
"Loved the cottage and would stay again, it is close to the road and the bridge can be noisy, and sadly there was roadworks,, but the location made up for it."
Hardly used the car as so much to see and do. Cottage full of character, but might benefit from a lick of paint, that said was lovely and clean and bedding and towels were spotless.
-
"The Lock House is perfectly placed to enjoy all Gloucester (per foot ) has to offer while enjoying its superb Location."
Easy acces to the main roads for day trips. The house itself is not perfect and that gives it a certain lived in charm, just small wear and tear that you expect. kitchen, bathroom , bedrooms and livingrooms all have there charm and we felt quite comfortable and after a few days it was a home from home.
-
"The house was in a great location and very quietly situated."
It was well equipped with all you could need. The bedrooms were all a good size and very comfortable. No trouble getting a good slerp at all. In general cleanliness was good although it could have benefited from a deep clean. But this was probably due to it being at the end of the season more than any lack of attention. Overall, I would certainly consider booking it again.
-
"No. We always have good service with Sykes."
We never have any problems and our cottages are always lovely. From start to finish our dealings with Sykes are always problem free.
-
"The Lock House is very well positioned for a holiday that includes lots of heritage and history and loads of great shopping and places to eat."
The house is right on the lock and the lock-keepers were very friendly and well-informed, the rear garden looks down over the river. Beds were comfortable and house had everything that we needed. Secure parking behind double gates also another great feature. So much to do and see in Gloucester Docks and the city itself that we didn't need the car much, but also in easy reach of many other places - took a trip to Berkeley Castle (often used as a TV/film set) one day and Forest of Dean with its railway on another.
-
"Excellent location easy walking distance of both docks and the city of Gloucester , (and I say that as both of us have walking disabilities ) the car can be left parked in its own private place so its just as easy to stroll around rather than fight the city traffic lol."
the cottages is clean and has everything needed for your holiday break ,even down to tea /coffee milk etc left with loads of other stuff by the owners , a stroll along the keyes is a must to see the long boats and sailing ships with many cafes and bars and places to have a snack or a main meal if required , one place of interest ,and this is right on the doorstep is an antique shop ,looks small from the outside but is massive inside with so many items of yesteryear and military items , real time consuming but loved every minute .another nice walk is over the bridge at the rear of the house and you have a green area bordering the river severn , but better still the back garden is excellent to sit out in fenced off from the river and ideal to sit in or let our dog out to play without worrying that he could get out . I recommend this cottage for anyone that needs a stress free break , If I had any faults to find , there is some noise as vehicles pass over the small bridge that crosses the canal but after a couple of days it was not noticable any more .
-
"The cottage was comfortable, clean and very well equipped."
The oven, though working was a little difficult to gauge as the heat settings are obliterated so a little guess work was required. On a positive note, fresh flowers, toilet rolls, cleaning products, tea, biscuits and milk on arrival are all lovely and very welcome after travelling. A little noisy re traffic over the bridge, but not too disturbing. Great location. Visiting the prison was also very interesting and worth seeing.
-
"Was good that the cottage had secure off road parking."
Location was great for visiting the city centre and historic docks on foot. Ideal city centre location.
-
"Access to and from parking area a little difficult also parking suitable for 2 x cars not 3."
-
"The cottage was clean and comfortable, the welcome pack was fine, but would advise that it should also contain coffee not just tea."
The accommodation was very centrally located for all amenities of Gloucester, the one negative was that the cottage is next to an metal road bridge over the canal, every time a car goes over you hear a loud thumping noise in the cottage, this bridge is very busy, even when we went in February.
-
"This was a gem of a property especially after previous experiences - roomy everything as described and well looked after even a friendly lock keeper to wave at!"
Cars parked for the whole week and able to walk canals from home with dogs
-
"Fantastic place, right in the middle of the docks and close to all amenities but so lovely and peaceful, could have been in the middle of the countryside."
-
"The large, secure parking area was really appreciated and the cottage was perfectly situated for exploring the Gloucester area on foot."
We walked to two different locations to see the Severn Bore which was one of the reasons we booked this property. We were also surprised at how efficient the heating was for an old house and we were lovely and warm without needing the fire.
-
"A great place to stay."
Everything you could want on your doorstep. Great places to Eat. The owners gave thought too extra touches. Highly reccommend Dr Fosters to eat. Top class food and friendly staff.
