Thank you for letting me know about the toilet mechanism. Our plumber will be replacing it next week and it should not be a problem for future guests. Property Owner

  • "This listing is fabulous."

I booked it as a base for walking the first half of the Cotswold Way Walk. It's convenient to sufficient amenities in Winchcombe where there re nice pubs, a mini market (opposite the listing) and lovely shops. We were a group of four walkers yet the listing will easily accommodate six people as advertised as there is plenty of room. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a bottle of wine, biscuits and milk. A real nice touch from the owner Helen. Thank you. I can't recommend this property enough if you want a base to explore the Cotswolds.

The Post Master’s Lodgings is in the centre of Winchcombe. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It was warm, clean and very comfortable. The open plan kitchen sitting room was spacious light and airy. The kitchen had everything we needed. The beds were comfortable. We loved the outlook over the streets and rooftops of Winchcombe from the bedroom windows. We found Winchcombe a delightful place to be in - full of history and interesting shops. Winchcombe is an also a good centre from which to visit the Cotswolds and Cheltenham. We did not find the lack of parking a problem. The short walk to the public car park was not too far or too inconvenient. It was good to stay in a place that had history and character and I can recommend The Post Master’s Lodgings.

Dear Joan I'm delighted to read that you and your family enjoyed your stay at the Postmaster's Lodging. I don't think that you had any issues with the property, you probably just missed ticking the facilities and manitenance box on your feedback form, resulting in our getting a poor score for this! I'm sure you didn't mean to give us a bad score. Hopefully potential new guests will see that we pride ourselves on ensuring that the property is as perfect as possible for each new set of visitors. It was very well equipped, and the extra touches were lovely, in particular - wine and biscuits. The kitchen had everything we needed and the soap, toilet rolls and 2 towels each were very much appreciated. The beds were enormous and very comfortable. The owners seemed to have thought of everything. The position of the property was exactly what we were hoping for, lovely places to eat out and also good takeaways as well as the facilities to cook the occasional meal to eat in. The walks were fabulous and the views breathtaking. It's one of the prettiest places we've stayed in. Parking wasn't a problem at all, we parked on the pay and display carpark near the library and then paid online each day (£1 per day). We fully recommend staying in Winchcombe and definitely at the Postmaster's lodging.

  • "Postmaster's Lodgings was a beautiful property, very well presented with some welcoming touches on our arrival."

The wine, biscuits and milk were gratefully received. My twin boys did find the smallest bedroom difficult to share, so would have benefitted from the larger bedroom being converted into a twin, but no one realised that all my boys are closer in stature to men than children! I would say it would have been helpful to have some simple instructions to operate the oven as a manual with numerous operating details proved unhelpful when arriving with a hungry family. By the time we left I still didn't understand how on the 2 occasions I'd got the oven on, what it was that had finally brought success! One other thing to bear in mind is that in choosing such a central location in the heart of a popular town, noise levels are to be endured. For this reason only, I would look for a quieter location for future holidays.

The property

Built in 1892, on the site of an ancient public house ‘The Grapevine’, 27 North Street was home to Winchcombes Post Office for over 120 years.

When the Post Office closed in 2016, it was purchased by the current owner who has totally renovated the property over two years.

Postmaster’s Lodging is a three storey maisonette, situated behind and above the former Post Office retail premises, which now accommodates a gemstone and jewellery design studio.

For as long as anyone in Winchcombe can remember, the Postmaster and his family made their home above the shop.

The front door of Postmaster’s Lodging opens onto a landscaped courtyard garden, shared with a small cottage which has been converted from what was the Post Office Sorting Office.

The courtyard and both properties are accessed along an undercroft from a door on North Street.

Behind the door you will discover a lobby with coat and shoe racks, paintings and antique furniture.

The interior boasts a first floor open-plan living area, where you will be welcomed by a lounge with cream sofas, a beautiful kitchen/diner with sage coloured units, a charming dining table, and wood effect flooring.

Original documents and photographs discovered during the renovation of the property are interspersed, throughout Postmaster’s Lodging, with watercolours by local artist Sue Birtwhistle and contribute to an appreciation of the history of this imposing building in the beautiful Cotswold town of Winchcombe.

From morning through to evening, this is a lovely place to unwind, with an outlook over the village to represent the characterful location.

A collection of bedrooms have been lovingly decorated with stylish bedding, fashionable carpets, bedside tables, and a quirky ceiling which rests above.

One bedroom features its own fabulous en-suite, and all boast zip/link options for flexibility, should you wish to alter the set-up.

Bedroom three has a lovely view of the town and the Cotswold hills beyond.

Lastly, a family bathroom completes the cottage, a fresh white suite with a shower above the bath.

Winchcombe has ‘Walkers are Welcome’ status and many lovely footpaths with interesting things to see en-route.

You can visit a remote Roman villa, Belas Knap Long Barrow, a Neolithic burial site, as well as climb to the top of the Cotswold scarp and see fantastic views.

Winchcombe hosts an annual walking festival in May which offers a variety of walks with local guides, orienteering and evening events.

Cotswold stone cottages enhanced by black and white half-timbered buildings, narrow side streets and charming houses make up the centre of this town.

A unique retreat to bring you a memorable stay.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £250.
