  • "Malt House, Windrush, Gloucestershire."

When you invest £3000 for a week’s holiday in the UK for your family you expect it to be something special. Sadly, nothing could be further from the truth. Gasping for a cup of tea after the long journey only to find kettle in a disgraceful state so I ended up having to descale it before use. My grandchildren wanted a cold drink, but the glassware was filthy so that too required cleaning. A kitchen drawer was full of water and some of the utensils inside were rusty. The washing machine had mould growing around the door evidence yet again that a proper cleaning regime wasn’t in place. But worse was still to come. As the first day wore on, we were besieged by thousands of wood lice in both the living areas and bedrooms. We were constantly using the Henry to vacuum them up. The grandchildren were terrified and wouldn’t sleep, the lice were crawling out of the loft hatch and falling on to their beds, they ended up sleeping with me and their parents. My son contacted Sykes only to be told it was just “nature” and that they would disappear when they learned that humans were there. This was rubbish and just a pathetic attempt to placate without doing anything. A holiday should be for rest and relaxation but was anything but. We toughed it out for a few days, vacuuming several times a day but in the end decided to come home early. Sykes were totally disinterested and did nothing to help. Sadly it would seem we may have to legal action unless Sykes respond positively.

Thank you for your feedback with regards to your stay at The Malt House. I'm sorry to hear the Housekeeping wasn't up to our usual high standards, this will be forwarded to our Managed Services to review. I understand you spoke to our Out of Hours services and they explained woodlice do sometimes come out in very old period property's with stone walls. I understand it's not pleasant, but unfortunately it's out of our control to, that said we would have been more than happy to send our HK over to hoover and clean the areas and to provide new bedding if this made you feel more comfortable. I hope you still managed to enjoy the pool and took your Grandchildren to the Wildlife Park just down the road, it's worth the visit. Kind Regards Manor Cottages Property Owner

  • "This has been our third stay at The Malt House and it’s captivating charm continues elements of the house however are getting tired."

The house was cold when we arrived and took several days to warm up, not good when you have a small baby in the group. The en-suite to one of the main bedrooms which had a stone floor and walls was glacial, the underfloor heating did not work as the controls were off and the sole radiator did not have the capacity to heat the space consequently showers were taken quickly! The draught from the boiler flue casing that passes through the bathroom exacerbated to the chill. The drain to the walk in shower in the other bathroom was eventually cleared after a generous dose of Mr Muscle drain unblocker. The dishwasher did not wash clean and several items needed to be re washed each time after the machine had finished. The glassware for dining was lacking and a couple of tumblers were chipped and could not be used safely. This is not what one would expect for a house with such a high rental cost, and the “fear” of COVID really deters you from calling in the housekeeper but, despite all of these issues, the house and it’s contents retain a charm, space and comfort that was ideal for a family group of our size, it just needs tweaking. Finally a Christmas tree, as we has been provided in the past, would have been nice particularly for my grand daughter.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a constructive feedback, we will inform the owner of all your recommendations and will work on it. Looking forward to welcoming you again Property Owner

  • "The property was very cluttered with all the owners Personal possessions."

There was far too much of this and therefore this felt like you were staying in their home (like you would perhaps expect in and airb&b). Also whilst covid is still an issue this seems very unhygienic as there is no way the cleaners can clean everything in that house that could be touched. Also had the gardeners turn up one day with their petrol strimmers / blowers and mowers - this was very disruptive and could easily be done on check out day when you have to check out at 10am and can’t check until 1800. That’s a whole day that could be used for maintenance.

  • "We all particularly loved the huge and beautiful garden."

So many interesting and lovely plants, so many different spaces to wander or sit, such a wonderful grassy lawn where the children played cricket and football and tennis and ran barefoot for the sheer joy of it. The pool was also an obvious winner, even though the weather wasn’t particularly warm. The house itself was spacious, fascinating and very comfortable, and we especially enjoyed the conservatory with its heady scent of geraniums. The children loved their attic room, and one said he liked how dark and quiet it was at night. In all, it was just a delightful place to be, and although we did get out and about a bit, we were all keen to go back to the house and spent most of our time there: it was so much more than just a place to eat and sleep.

Thank you for your lovely feedback regarding your stay at The Malt House. It is a magical place to stay and a wonderful for children and adults alike. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and we hope to welcome you back again in the future. Property Owner

  • "We had the best time at this cottage."

It had everything to make it the perfect place to stay. We had beautiful weather too so made full use of the pool. We hired a chef for a birthday dinner and the conservatory was such a beautiful setting to host this. The grounds are idyllic and seem to be endless. I would 100 percent recommend this home and can’t wait to return.

Thank you for your kind feedback. We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay at The Malt House! What a fantastic way to make the most of your time here. We look forward to seeing you again soon! Property Owner

  • "We have already had extensive email and phone contact with you about this property."

It is beautiful to look at from the outside, in a very pretty village and with a large and lovely garden; but inside it was cluttered, not remotely covid safe, and parts of it including the kitchen were really dirty. It should have been made clear that this is someone’s home; rendering your assertions about high touch items having been removed in view of covid completely meaningless. We also had to put up with electrical problems, leaky dormer windows, and heating problems which is not acceptable particularly in December. Overall we were disappointed especially as this is not a cheap property! We accepted your offer of a £200 refund but this has yet to arrive, over a week later.

Thank you for your feedback. We apologise for the issues you experienced during your stay. As soon as we received the phone call, our maintenance attended and fixed the heating and the leaky windows. He also looked at the lights in the bathroom, it transpired that it was a bigger issue than anticipated, when it was offered for an electrician attend you declined. Housekeepers were sent within two hours of the call and was turned away as you had resolved this yourself. Your comments have been taken on board regarding the cluttered look which the owner will rectify. The refund has been processed, however to the holiday season this can take up to 15 working days. • "We booked the Malt House to celebrate my 70th birthday with my family."

The house is lovely, warm and cosy while being spacious enough to give people their own space. We had my birthday meal in the garden room with a private chef who catered for us. This made for a very convivial evening. The house is well equipped and comfortable. We were all adults, but I would think twice before bringing young children as there are lots of precious things, such as a large dinner service, at child level. We all loved the house. It must have a great history. The garden is beautiful, but as my birthday is mid October we didn’t make much use of it. It is a lovely backdrop to the house. The setting was tranquil. I would recommend the house to others. I have stayed with friends at Sykes Cottages before so I knew what to expect and I wasn’t disappointed. A big thank you to the owners for making it available to us and thanks to the housekeepers who left it clean and tidy.

Many thanks for taking time to leave your feedback on The Malt House. We hope you had a wonderful birthday! Property Owner

  • "Superb family week away!"

It is a lovely old house with a wonderful conservatory and everything you could possibly need. The bedrooms are very large and extremely comfortable and the bathrooms are wonderful! The bedroom with two single beds (not shown in the advertising photographs) is quite small but ideal for two children. The room with three single beds has a narrow, very steep staircase and is not really suitable for very young children so my son brought down a mattress and bedding into their bedroom for their daughter. The garden is immense and beautifully maintained with interesting separate low-walled areas with seating - the Koi Carp were lovely to just sit and observe. The swimming pool was surprisingly warm and everybody enjoyed it tremendously. We were a family of 8 adults, one 2.5 year old, a three month old and three dogs and everybody had a great time with things to do/see quite close by to suit all ages. The robotic mower just trundled quietly around for a few hours on the large lawn every day and was quite fascinating to watch! WiFi is somewhat intermittent but works well in the kitchen, upstairs and in the conservatory. Would highly recommend The Malt House and we hope to visit again.

  • "The Malt House was just fantastic."

The house itself was beautiful - big and rambling but still comfortable and well equipped. Even better was the garden - I hadn't realised just how huge it was from the advert. We were lucky to get a few warm sunny days in April and our children loved running outside, playing hide and seek, chasing the robot lawnmower and looking out for the pheasants. The location was great too with plenty of places to visit within easy reach. Overall, we had a wonderful holiday.

We had a great time, greatly facilitated by this beautiful house. It gaves us everything that we had wanted and more. The space was plenty enough to swallow up 3 families, with the kids running around having endless games of hide and seek whilst the adults cooked and caught up over a glass of wine. I would thoroughly recomend it to others!

The property

The Malt House is the sort of place where you arrive and never want to leave.

From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere, the character, comfort and charm give it a magical feel a truly unique sense that you are enjoying a one-off holiday home.

Sitting in a timeless village in the heart of the Cotswolds, you are in the midst of the most attractive part of the region.

You are just 10 mins drive from Burford and no more than 15 mins from notable places such as Stow on the Wold and Bourton on the Water giving you an excellent base for getting out and about.

However, we suspect you won't want to leave this venerable old house - a proper home from home, where you will find some artfull touches to make it a one-off.

There is little that this holiday home doesn't have, it has, amongst many other things: a pool, Sky Sports, multiple woodburners, a piano(!) a conservatory, an enormous garden (even a cutting flower garden for you to help yourself), three of the highest quality bathrooms we have EVER seen and enough rooms to keep everyone happy.

The owner has the most wonderful taste and she has made this house unique, very much a home.

Down the lane just 10 min walk away is a good local pub and about 10 mins drive away is The Wheatsheaf at Northleach (the best gastro pub in the Cotswolds reputedly).

If Daylesford is your thing that's just 20 mins away.

Of course this assumes you want to get out!

For families, friends or groups this is OUTSTANDING choice of self catering accommodation.

Heavenly!

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £300.

About the location

Burford

Burford is possibly one of, if not THE most famous of the Cotswolds' locations. With its medieval bridge, old stone houses and attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages, Burford is justifiably one of the most picturesque towns in England. Often referred to as the 'Gateway to the Cotswolds', the town was originally a fortified Anglo-Saxon ford which later grew to be an important regional crossroads and wealthy wool town. Located mid way between Oxford and Cheltenham (25 mins each away) it is a little haven of history and beauty that many come to fall in love with when they visit.

The 16th century Tolsey building, once the meeting place for medieval merchants, now houses The Tolsey Museum, a delightful local museum illustrating the town's social and industrial past. The church is stunning, a real gem architecturally with many interesting memorials charting some of Burford's great families. There is also the signature, on the baptisimal font, of Antony Sedley, one of the Levellers besieged in the church in 1649 - three of the ringleaders were executed by Oliver Cromwell's men in the churchyard. History awaits!

With little changing over the centuries, Burford is now very popular with visitors, both for its beauty and history but also for its shopping and antiques, and for the wide variety of places to eat, with restaurants, pubs and teashops. It is an ideal base for visiting The Cotswolds area as it is within easy driving distance of popular attractions such as Blenheim Palace, Sudley Castle, Warwick Castle and several National Trust Houses and Gardens. Bourton on the Water, Bibury, Cirencester and Stow on the Wold are all with 25 minutes from the property.

Note: The family room is accessed via steep steps and may not be suitable for those with limited mobility. This room is a double with the stair case in the room, going up the the eves with 3 single beds in.
