  • "Had a really lovely stay."

Cottage very comfortable, cosy, spacious, with a beautiful garden. Just a few of observations. Garden gate leading up to the top of the garden has to be lifted up to be able to open/close it. Some people may find this awkward. Also, the bench up there is broken - lovely spot to sit so could do with repair/replacing. I did have to clear up other people's dog mess on the bottom patio area near the kitchen window as didn't want anyone thinking that was mine - it had clearly been used as a toilet area for one particular dog - the odd poo is acceptable to miss but there were at least 6 very large clearly visible poops which gives the rest of us dog owners a bad name and risks properties not allowing dogs. Presume cleaners understandably wont clear up for next guest as it's not pleasant. Anyway, totally recommend the cottage - the cider and dog treats were a nice touch thank you and would stay again if in the area :)

Thanks for your feedback – I'm very glad you enjoyed your stay at Beulah Cottage. The bench is indeed a priority for mending (it belonged to my grandfather). It will get the attention it needs once late summer bookings slow down and allow a maintenance gap. I'll also take a look at the garden gate, and see how that can be improved. My sincere apologies for the dog-mess - I was away on holiday myself that week, and while the rest of the team do a great job, I can't always rely on others to have the keen eye for details that aren't run of the mill, so I'm very sorry that had been overlooked. We do ask all guests to check for dog poo left in the garden before they leave and clean up after themselves, and the majority of our guests are cooperative in leaving the house and garden tidy, and ready for the changeover team who work very hard against the clock between guests. May I remind future guests to allow plenty of time to pack, tidy and clean up at the end of their stay to avoid a rush before the 10am departure time, to leave the house and garden in a good state, and to bring our attention to any damage or details that need our attention. We appreciate all your efforts to help us to keep our standards high for future guests. Thank you Sarah for having done so yourself. Property Owner

It was so peaceful and the weather that we had helped us enjoy the very large and well kept gardens. The house inside is beautiful and characterful with everything that we needed available for a very comfortable stay. Apart from some cobwebs in the lounge area and some areas that looked like mould very low down, for example a corner of the dining room the cottage was very well presented and I hope to return again soon. Highly recommended. Thank you Allan and Jo for such a lovely holiday there.

  • "This property has some nice authentic features like the log burners and beamed ceiling in a really nice location."

It is well equipped with comfortable beds and hot water always available. However there were maintenance issues that we were not happy about. The fact there are no photos of the kitchen is a red flag and this is probably due to the sink issue. The wooden worktop which surrounds the inside of the butler style sink was black and really looked quite disgusting. The owner provided a lengthy account of how difficult it is to keep it treated with special products as it’s too expensive to replace, clearly this is a big problem. I will add photos on Tripadvisor. There is a cracked window in the largest bedroom, again the owner is aware but has no plans to replace or fix it. Smaller issues could easily have been resolved if the property was checked properly before changeover - a new lightbulb needed in the bathroom and as we paid a large premium to stay at Christmas, which I checked would be decorated in advance I did expect the tree lights to work. Some small changes would make a big difference, like investing in new towels as we were provided with very worn, small bath towels.

The cottage is exactly as described and what we had expected, and the age of the building and the layout all added to the atmosphere. On Sunday afternoon, 11 members of the local Baptist congregation gathered for their Sunday service in the 1877 chapel opposite and the hymn singing to a pipe organ created a wonderful background to the area as it might have been in the days of the coal mining community of about 150 years ago, and evident throughout the Forest of Dean

The beds very comfy and all rooms nicely decorated with amazing paintings everywhere. The bathrooms although completely adequate could do with updating. Thank you. Enjoyed the paintings but forgot to take down details of sales website. Only issue is upstairs loo which blocked twice, dealt with quite easily though. On the whole, would like to return to continue exploring the surrounding environs, didn't go down the mine or actually take a dip in St Anthonys' Well. Would like to see more sculpture trail, curtailed because of time, but we did see a family of wild Boar! So much more to explore.

Peaceful, quiet village but only 5 minutes drive to Littledean and 10 minutes to Cinderford. The cottage gave us the chance to stay under one roof with our children and grandchildren and now have all gained some special memories of this time together. The cottage had all the facilities to make the stay special including a large dinning table that comfortably sat all 7 of us. Of course I mean a mild reaction but swollen eyes (most obvious sign) not an pleasant. 2) the catch on the gate to/from the drive is lethal!! It really can be dangerous. Don’t have a suggestion on mitigation as of course recognise the mechanism is needed but caution required for sure

I actually took my air fryer as we needed to rustle up meals quickly for hungry toddlers . There are plenty of saucepans and crockery to cook for large numbers and also last between dishwasher cycles . There are far more toys than suggested in the description of the games room and enough to keep all ages busy even 1 and 2 year olds. There were woodland walks direct from the cottage and the local scenery is breathtaking. • "Beulah Cottage is in an idyllic part of the Forest of Dean."

The cottage has plenty of character and charm and was a special place to stay. The log burner in the front room made it very warm and cosy in the evenings. The TV in the sitting room would have been better if it was larger as we mainly stayed inside in the evenings as it is Winter and had to move the sofa's closer as it was hard to see. As the cottage sleeps 8 people the kitchen should have more pans for cooking as there was only 1 baking tray and 1 Frying pan. Also as the description states towels provided, one of these needs to be big enough to be a bath towel as the largest was quite small. The garden is huge and fantastic the way it goes into the forest which our dog loved. Regardless of all the above points we had a lovely restful week in the cottage and would recommend.

Thank you for your kind comments Alison. It would seem that you only found the cooking implements stored right next to the cooker – in fact there is a 2nd large cupboard full of cookware, with a selection of baking trays, roasting pan, cake tin, pizza trays, casserole dishes etc and a second frying pan, so the cottage is amply supplied – I have (since your comment) made that clearer for guests who are only staying a couple of nights and may not have explored fully. Each guest is provided with a standard sized bath-towel plus a hand-towel, in addition to a hand-towel and bathmat in each bathroom. The TV is not massive, but we plan to upgrade it now that we have full-fibre super-fast broadband (just arrived in the area). Guests are encouraged to bring their own HDMI connectable streaming device if they wish to access their own netflix account for example; the property has Free-Sat which provides a wide selection of channels, as well as a DVD player with a selection of DVDs to suit all ages. There is also a good collection of family favourite board-games, as well as a large cupboard full of younger children’s toys, so we find that many guests choose not to use the TV at all. • "Three stars for the location and garden, two for the cottage."

Lovely area - we were very spoilt by the fabulous weather, sun all week. The garden is great, could do with a bench at the top of the garden. Also the BBQ and area is nothing like the photograph. A scruffy pub bench and basic, non gas bbq is what you’ll find, The cottage itself is average. I’ve stayed in much better properties for a third of the price. When we arrived there were cobwebs and spiders in almost every corner. We spend just under an hour vacuuming them away. My son has a terrible fear of spiders - unfortunately, even after cleaning up, the damage was done, my son and his fiancée left after one night as he couldn’t sleep. Yes, we did expect spiders in a cottage, but they were literally everywhere. They obviously hadn’t been cleaned away recently. The windows haven’t been cleaned for a good while, people have drawn pictures on them!! The settee under the window has no padding, it’s like you’re sitting on the floor. The leather settees need cleaning, they are shiny and slippery. Not comfortable at all. The cottage needs a lot of TLC and a deep clean. My view is, as people leave the cottage, they clean up and as requested, leave it as they find it. The cleaner arrives, a quick look around, change the bedding and that’s it, On the plus side, the games room was great, the beds comfortable enough, everything you could need in the kitchen (except sharp scissors). Disappointed as this holiday was rearranged from 2020, it was our 30th wedding anniversary get together that ended up just being three of us instead of five. Can’t fault the location though, extremely peaceful with plenty of walks and an abundance of wildlife, we spotted boar, deer (even one in the garden), plenty of squirrels, an owl, buzzard with a squirrel, a slow worm and even a frog. We will definitely return to the Forest of Dean, just not this cottage.

About the location

LITTLEDEAN

Newnham-on-Severn 2 miles; Gloucester centre 14 miles.

Littledean is a village in the Forest of Dean, containing many ancient buildings, and with Roman fortifications evident on the hillside east of the village. It provides a shop, Post Office and two pubs. The nearby picturesque village of Newnham-on-Severn offers riverside walks, a wide range of individual shops, and traditional inns within well preserved Georgian buildings. The Royal Forest of Dean, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and England's largest oak forest, offers many activities including cycling, horse riding and numerous lovely walks. Caving, abseiling and a high wire rope course are on offer for the more adventurous while other activities include fishing, golf, kayaking and canoeing. Victorian docklands, Roman foundations and a Norman Cathedral can be found at the riverfront city of Gloucester. The market town of Ross-on-Wye, overlooking a large loop in the River Wye, has excellent shops, pubs and restaurants to suit every taste plus many black and white timbered buildings, and is close by as is the River Severn Estuary, famous for it's tidal bore, bird watching and abundance of wildlife. View the area from a river cruise or hot air balloon or enjoy trips to Symonds Yat, the Black Mountains, Hereford and Monmouth.
