  • "Very comfortable, cosy and warm, just what was needed for a dank February week."

Lovely welcome pack from Nikki and Paul, much appreciated. Great location for exploring the area. The road noise which gets frequent mentions in previous reviews was not a problem for us, there is really very little traffic at night and not a great deal during the day. Parking is fine for one car although sometimes we saw that vehicles meeting on the road outside did try and use the parking area as a passing space so our car needed to be tucked in close to the wall. It should be mentioned that there is no door to the double bedroom upstairs so it is not completely private and, for a person that goes to bed early, conversations and TV etc downstairs would be audible. The easy solution is for that person to use the downstairs bedroom. Overall, very happy with the Happy Cow and we'd be very happy to come again.

We were welcomed with a thoughtful array of local treats and even our dog was provided for with some tasty snacks! The owner has considered all sorts of touches that people may appreciate during their stay. It is in a beautiful spot, central to Symonds Yat, with Yat Rock and a great pub, The Saracens Head, on the doorstep (both being quite a close, steep climb/descent through the woodland) It’s great trail walking country and there’s opportunity to hire paddleboards or canoes down on the river too. Other reviews mentioned being on the road, it didn’t particularly disturb us at all from a noise perspective but it is very narrow and traffic is steady so just to be aware and careful. We would definitely return.

Thank for taking the time to leave this lovely feedback and we are glad you enjoyed your stay at the cottage. We have recently had new windows fitted so good to hear they are keeping out the traffic noise. We look forward to welcoming you back sometime. Property Owner

The cottage is very cosy and full of character with living room/dining area, kitchen, twin bedroom and bathroom downstairs and double bedroom with en-suite upstairs. In the living room there’s a bookcase filled with books, DVD’s and games along with pamphlets showing local attractions and walks. The TV has a built in DVD player. The kitchen has a new cooker and well equipped with everything we needed (including tea bags, salt and pepper, washing up liquid, foil and cling film!) The owners have even supplied shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, hand wash and a hairdryer. The fairy lights and welcome basket are a lovely touch. The cottage is in a prime location very close to loads of wonderful walks. The cottage is set on a single-track part of the road, so you will need to be aware of traffic in both directions when exiting by foot and by car. There is a bit of traffic noise, but it didn’t bother us in the slightest and we didn’t need to use the ear plugs which were kindly supplied! After a days walking we wanted to spread out a bit in the evening to relax, however in our opinion the 2 seater sofa was not big enough and the 2 chairs were not particularly comfortable. This was the only snag for us. We would definitely recommend staying here and also giving Goodrich Castle a visit. Phil.

The cottage is well laid out, the welcome pack is on a whole other level (i want that bara brith recipe) and it's definitely dog friendly, rather than dog tolerant (there's a difference) which makes the stay so much more pleasant. We loved the welcome pack of advice on local walks, pubs, attractions etc., Severn cider, bara brith and the 2 dogs loved the toy. Its hard to find a dog friendly cottage in such a great location, thank you for that. The cottage itself is one of the most beautiful places we have stayed and we will definitly book the place again with a group of 4 when coming to visit again. About the noise from the road? We do not understand what all the fuss is about. It really is not a problem, it is no busier than any countryside road, to be expected near Symonds Yat Rock. In the late evening and through the night there is hardly a car that passes. All honesty why would you be inside the cottage during the day when it is more busier? Enjoyed a wonderful long weekend away back in April. Amazing locations, right in Symmonds Yat, short walk to the look out and the river. We walked/cycled/ran straight from the front door. Immaculate cottage, lovely furnishings and finishing touches. Very good value for money given quality of the accommodation and location

  • "We had the most wonderful stay at the Happy Cow."

The cottage was so very clean and we had plenty of space for the two of us for 11 nights. Nikki and Paul were fantastic hosts, they made sure we had everything we needed and decorated the whole cottage with Christmassy touches and even a real Christmas tree! They even dropped firewood off at our door when we had run out and were there to answer all our queries. The Happy Cow is so cosy and has a wonderful atmosphere. We enjoyed visiting the nearby milkshed to make our own milkshakes and the fantastic Symonds Yat Rock view point is just on the door step, make sure to catch the sunrise/ sunset :) Thank you Nikki and Paul, we will be back! Treasured memories and moments :)

We were left a Welcome Pack which was much appreciated, as we booked this holiday on the same day we arrived. So glad the Happy Cow was available. The cottage is within walking distance of Symonds Yat Rock with spectacular views and a café cabin. It is also within a short drive of Monmouth, Ross-on-Wye, Tintern Abbey and many other towns and tourist attractions. The neighbours are also very friendly. I will definitely be visiting the Happy Cow again. I fully recommend a stay.

The cottage so pleasant and clean and exactly what we were hoping for. The lane is a challenge. • "When you sent us a message to review our first nights stay, i mentioned that the traffic noise was really bad and would prevent us returning to this property, there was no mention of road noise in the property description at the time of booking ( I have a copy of the webpage at that time), but since my mention of the traffic issue I see that you have now amended the property description which now includes a mention of the road being busy and the associated noise."

Had that been the description at the time of booking I probably would not have booked, as traffic noise is something we are trying to get away from. So in short I feel that your behaviour was underhanded and unprofessional and as a result we will be contacting trading standards with all the details and will see if any legal action can be taken. Needless to say we will not be recommending your company to anyone.

However, it is adjacent to a fairly busy, very steep and narrow lane that does create certain challenges. Also, because of the immediate terrain, it was not so appropriate for my mother who has walking difficulties - it would have been helpful to know that in advance, we will choose somewhere flatter next time! That being said, we had a lovely time, the cottage itself was great and the welcome pack from the owners (including a home baked barabrith & other treats) was very much appreciated - thank you!
