  • "The property was lovely and well appointed."

I think 4 small beakers for 4 people is a little unreasonable. And some of the baking equipment is a bit worn out. The trim on the microwave was loose and the fridge light didn't work. Also some light bulbs needed replacing. There were some stains on carpets and sofas. But the beds were comfortable. Although having to move quilts out of the wardrobe in order to use it wasn't good. Having said all that, the property, the setting and the eco credentials were all positive. A few simple fixes would make all the difference

  • "Best plot on the development away from the roads, Harley's was quiet and a true retreat."

Walking and cycling from doorstep with Rutland Water just a few mins away. Barnsdale Lodge across the road offering all their facilities (bar, restaurant, croquet) and happy to help with any query. Surprisingly spacious for our group of 2 adults and 4 kids (14-10yrs). The photos don't do the house justice! Superbly furnished, dining and living space plush and so comfortable, kitchen adequetly equipped (cooked all meals at Harleys). Only niggle was that the beds weren't terribly comfortable but it wouldn't stop me from returning. Had a fabulous time, stayed during mid Aug heatwave and was able to cool the lodge nicely in the evenings by having all windows and doors open. On top of it all was excellent value for money too (£1050 for a prime week in Aug! - last minute deal)

  • "We had a super week away."

The house was super and the staff at Barnsdale lodge were super responsive to our needs. The house very lovely and worked well. Bathrooms are a bit odd in their location but we worked it all out. Few things to note: The bedroom with no bathroom also has no ventilation, I think you could open a door but not appropriate for night time air. There was a lot of chipped crockery, a lot of mismatched crockery and not very many mugs which were also a random assortment. I left all the chipped crockery on the side with a note to say this was all damaged on our arrival. There was no recycling. There was a super complicated bin in the kitchen for separation but then everything just goes into a bin outside. Bit disappointing to not have recycling in place. Small things but thought they were worth noting none the less.

About the location

EXTON, RUTLAND

Stamford 7.8 miles; Melton Mowbray 14.4 miles

Exton offers a typical English village setting, with its traditional, stone buildings crowded around the green, in the East Midlands county of Rutland. The Fox and Hounds public house overlooks the tree-planted green, a former 17th century coaching inn, oozing with character, offering cosy winter evenings around the fireplace and lazy summer days out in the beer garden. To the south of the village are Barnsdale Gardens, created by Geoff Hamilton for the BBC's Gardeners' World, and the Barnsdale Hall Hotel and Country Club. Oakham is the nearest town, boasting a combination of stone and thatched buildings, a range of shops, as well as pubs, bars and eateries to choose from. There is also a local history museum, a 12th century castle and a 14th century church. The Rutland Water Nature Reserve offers watersports, a small water adventure park, birdwatching, a sailing club and fishing opportunities, with the Rutland Water Golf Course overlooking the lake. The train station provides access to the cities of Nottingham and Leicester with shops to browse and architecture to admire. The market town of Stamford is a mere stone's throw away, with its attractive Georgian-style buildings used in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice film, independent shops, cosy pubs and a range of restaurants. Melton Mowbray is further afield, with more amenities to explore. Home to the famous pork pie, this town also offers The Regal Cinema, Melton Theatre and the Melton Carnegie Museum. The village of Exton offers a warm and friendly atmosphere for the perfect holiday exploring the East Midlands.
