  • "The main tv in lounge is rubbish it keeps continually buffering and no bbc 1 or 2 is available."

“ Thank you for your feedback. We, unfortunately, had an internet outage during the period of your stay which caused issues in both the hotel and retreats. This was rectified as soon as we were able. Moving forward we are currently looking at changing the WiFi system to improve the service “ Property Owner

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the lodge."

Very well appointed with all you need. We had a few issues which were dealt with swiftly by team at Barnsdale Hotel. The staff were all most helpful and friendly. We shall certainly return . Staff at Sykes cottages were very efficient with this booking when we had to change dates. On a negative note. Please change the vacuum cleaner. It is dreadful. Couldn't use because of the smell.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review and we are so pleased that you had such a good time both in the retreat and at The Barnsdale hotel. With regards to the vacuum cleaner please accept our apologies and we shall get this rectified with immediate effect. Kind regards The Retreats Team Property Owner

  • "Staff were very friendly and helpful."

Internet was poor unable to use the tv streaming services. Shower ran out of hot water very quickly so had to be advanced an hour before the next member of the family could use it. The furnishings were very good The kitchen was well fitted out. The lodge itself was very nice and the lawns around and hedges were full of birds and insect life. Apart from some noise from a nearby road it was very peaceful It’s well sited for nearby walks around Rutland lakes or cycle rides. Lots of great pubs nearby. Would stay there again but I hope the Wi-Fi and hot water are remedied.

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and we also thank you for highlighting areas that require our attention. Following this we are pleased to confirm that these have now been remedied and we look forward to welcoming you again in the future. Property Owner

  • "Beautiful Lodge."

Very well equipped. Would come again. Please note that the garden area is not dog secure (you have to keep an eye on the dogs when they are out there) and you have to guess what goes into which bin in the waste unit (and how the TV Remote operates). Which all adds to the fun of being in a new place for a while. Staff responsive and quick to deal with any questions. High standards met at the Booking Stage were maintained at the Point of Delivery.

  • "Fabulous place to stay."

Everything you could need to make your stay perfect. Fluffy towels, comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen. Lovely modern décor. Bright, light and airy. Rutland water just a stone's throw with breath taking scenery. Thoroughly enjoyed our mini break. Will come back and would definitely recommend.

  • "Great lodges at Rutland Retreats - we rented three neighbouring lodges, Clipsham, Egleton and Barrowden."

This review is for all three. Sykes booking system was fine and follow up support to answer any queries was excellent. The staff at Rutland Retreats (Barnsdale hotel) were also extremely helpful. The lodges have nice grounds and paddocks which were excellent for exercising the dog, and for my three grandsons on their bikes. Also extremely near Rutland Water itself.

  • "The Lodge was lovely."

Location good for Rutland Water, Barnsdale Gardens and of course the Barnsdale Lodge Hotel is lovely. Lodge probably could have been a little cleaner, cobwebs and marks on walls, curtains in lounge a bit grubby and sofa stained. But facilities good, logs available from hotel although quite expensive. Lodge size good for 4 maybe a little tight for 6 adults and the photos gave impression of more space between lodges for dog. But rough ground available at entrance to lodges and at hotel. Generally, very good, nice location, peaceful and comfortable.

Well kept and so much to see around this area. Will be returning again.

  • "Accommodation was nice and generally well-appointed."

Kitchen equipment, in particular serving dishes etc were a little on the sparse side. Setting worked well and we appreciated the availability of shed for bike storage. For a cottage aimed at families, it would have benefited from the addition of some more child-friendly crockery/glasses. Outdoor table was a bit broken and in need of maintenance. Overall we had a lovely family break and would definitely consider visiting again.

  • "This is the second time we have visited Clipsham."

We love the cosy feel of the place. It really does feel like a home from home. It is nicely finished and well equipped. This is a lovely part of the world. It's great for people with dogs, and there are some fabulous walks, especially good for off-lead dog walking. I would recommend visiting the Tourist Board in Oakham, as they have some great circular walks of the local areas, with lovely open countryside, and few livestock (particularly appealing when you have dogs!)

  • "Clipsham cottage was absolutely lovely."

We had a great time there for a week. The cottage itself was cosy and very well equipped. We took our two Irish setters who seemed very happy - plenty of good dog walks. If you are after off-lead dog walking we would recommend parking at Barnsdale car park (Rutland Water) and there is a decent section where dogs are allowed off lead. The other good place for allowing dogs to run free was Fineshade Wood. It's a lovely part of the world. We would definitely recommend an evening meal at Barnsdale Lodge - food delicious and atmosphere fabulous. We will be back!

About the location

EXTON, RUTLAND

Stamford 7.8 miles; Melton Mowbray 14.4 miles

Exton offers a typical English village setting, with its traditional, stone buildings crowded around the green, in the East Midlands county of Rutland. The Fox and Hounds public house overlooks the tree-planted green, a former 17th century coaching inn, oozing with character, offering cosy winter evenings around the fireplace and lazy summer days out in the beer garden. To the south of the village are Barnsdale Gardens, created by Geoff Hamilton for the BBC's Gardeners' World, and the Barnsdale Hall Hotel and Country Club. Oakham is the nearest town, boasting a combination of stone and thatched buildings, a range of shops, as well as pubs, bars and eateries to choose from. There is also a local history museum, a 12th century castle and a 14th century church. The Rutland Water Nature Reserve offers watersports, a small water adventure park, birdwatching, a sailing club and fishing opportunities, with the Rutland Water Golf Course overlooking the lake. The train station provides access to the cities of Nottingham and Leicester with shops to browse and architecture to admire. The market town of Stamford is a mere stone's throw away, with its attractive Georgian-style buildings used in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice film, independent shops, cosy pubs and a range of restaurants. Melton Mowbray is further afield, with more amenities to explore. Home to the famous pork pie, this town also offers The Regal Cinema, Melton Theatre and the Melton Carnegie Museum. The village of Exton offers a warm and friendly atmosphere for the perfect holiday exploring the East Midlands.
