  • "Great Holiday property, very comfortable, tranquil, Ideal setting for our Golden wedding Anniversary dinner and holiday, great setting next to Lovely historic Church with it's ties to the Mitford Family etc."

Shame about the lack of Mobile phone signal, had to walk 3/4 mile to top of nearby hill to be able to send or receive.

We are glad to hear you had such an enjoyable stay for your Golden Wedding Anniversary - Congratulations!! Kind Regards, Manor Cottages Property Owner

  • "Tha house was lovely!"

Very beautiful. More beautiful than in the pictures. The bad experience - when the alarm turned off it was horrible. On another day there was smell of fire/smoke from outside the house that got in through all night and it was hard open the windows, and it was very hot. Also there was not air conditioning. And very important - the hot water in the shower wasn’t enough for 7 people. Despite all that - we had a lovely time (:

  • "This is a fabulous property, the cottage is in a superb setting and has a lot to offer."

An open plan and well stocked kitchen for family gathering, books and games, many countryside (dog) walks, a lovely local pub and the owner clearly has a great eye for internal decor. The maintenance team was also very helpful and fast when we realized the outside table parasol was missing, coming round within a couple of hours to sort it out. There are some negatives that previous reviews have mentioned, it is starting to show wear; the rugs for example look quite grubby. There is also only one shower for up to 8 people. However my only really notable complaint, and it really is a big negative, is the quality of the beds. For the price you would expect large luxurious beds and this is not what you get. The beds are old (divans that are now stained and on the floor without valances), no headrests, extremely hard (even with a mattress topper) and desperately uncomfortable. Unfortunately the same kind of bed was in all the rooms. It’s a real disappointment, we would have immediately booked again for another year but the sleep quality was too poor and we all came away with aching backs. It would have been five stars if not for the beds and there only being one shower.

  • "I strongly recommend you do not stay at this porperty or use this company."

The house had not been cleaned prior to arrival. It was littered with dead insects on the floor, dead flies on the windowsills, numerous cobwebs and more dead bugs floating in a half-full bath. We raised this with the property managers who gave reasons for the above (eg they were unaware the cleaner had not been, the house has a known problem with woodlice) and offered a clean, however we had already had to spend the start of our holiday cleaning it up. The house is as listed, however it is showing heavy use and wear and tear and is not at the standard expected for a listing of this value. This was in addition dirty mud marks from previous guests. On the third night the living room ceiling started to leak. We had to mop up and put vases/jugs down. It meant the living room was out of use for our young child. This was clearly not a new leak given the staining on the ceiling. We reported this to the property managers who explained they were aware of a leak and it should have been fixed. We find it unacceptable that a property with a number of known issues was let out and it hows poor management and a total disregard for the guests. Our complaints were met with reasons for this issue which did not resolve the matter. Additionally, as we did not have an account with Sykes there is no email address or message function to feedback. We have stayed in the cotswolds multiple times with different companies and so can vouch for this property and company being well below the experience expected for this area.

  • "Very nice house, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here."

The only two "complaints" are that the AGA was on when we arrived, making it way too hot inside (24-25 °C) and some of the pans didn't work on the induction plate or were bent at the bottom making cooking less ideal.

Thank you for your feedback with regards to your recent stay at Hillside Cottage. It's a lovely little village, perfect to escape modern day life. The Aga was left on longer due to delay in the warmer weather, we will investigate the cookware. We would love to welcome you back again in the future. Kind regards Manor Cottages. Property Owner

Although it has been a holiday home for many years, it was clean, comfortable, well equipped and we would happily stay there again. The only minor thing we would change is the shallow shower tray. On first use, water overflowed into the lounge below. To avoid this happening again, we kept shower times to 3 minutes.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback on your stay. It's great to hear that you enjoyed your time away once again and we appreciate you making us aware of the shower tray. We hope to welcome you again one day soon. Best wishes, Manor Cottages. Property Owner

The property is a stunning example of a Cotswolds property, it has all of those features that you would like and expect and many more. At the same time it’s incredibly modern with great lighting, a beautiful kitchen and excellent WiFi and TVs. The bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms are large and spacious and very clean with superb decor. We were very blessed with amazing sunny dry weather all week and that meant we could get out and about to the food festival at Blenheim Palace, some lovely countryside walks and great meals at The Swan Inn and The Maytime Inn. Overall superb!

Thank you for taking time to leave this feedback. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your time at Hillside Cottage and the local area. Best wishes, Manor Cottages Property Owner

  • "Overall we thought this was an excellent property."

The only notable downside was the lack of wifi especially in the sitting room. The TV didn’t stream at all well and was connected only to the wifi in order to watch it (Netflix, BBCiplayer etc) As we had booked a long stay we went ahead and bought a wifi network extender ourselves to solve the problem which it did. However it was somewhat strange that such a great property hadn’t really thought about or factored in good wifi. Also the extender came at our personal cost which we of course left at the house for future use.

We're pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Hillside. We're sorry to hear that you had problems with the wifi and will follow up with the owner about this. Best wishes, Manor Cottages Property Owner

  • "We absolutely LOVED our stay at Hillside Cottage over Christmas."

So much space for entertaining and the kitchen is well equipped for cooking Christmas dinners etc. The house is beautifully furnished and the owners clearly have great taste! The location is excellent - lovely country walks and a great pub on your doorstep, which made it feel very secluded yet still within easy access of Burford and larger supermarkets. Our only disappointment was in the quality of the bedding - one of the bed slats in the second largest room had broken, meaning the mattress was on a slope. The pillows were not the best either. If this small issue could be fixed, the property would be 10/10!

Thank you for your lovely review. We're delighted that you had such a great stay at Hillside Cottage and enjoyed your Christmas there. Thank you also for bringing to our attention the issue you encountered with one of the beds. Your comments have been passed on to the Property Manager and we hope that this didn't impact your stay. An intriguing stay next to the church as we learnt about the Mitford sisters. I did feel nervous about there being no house telephone, no outdoor phone box and no signal. If there was an emergency, we would not have the ability to call for services.

  • "This is undoubtedly a lovely house but there are issues."

I’ll just list them rather than go into details and ramble on 1. The check in time is to late. 2 The welcome pack is a bit odd. Orange Juice, Milk, Crisps, chocolates and biscuits. How about some bread, butter, eggs and cheese. Drop the chocolates and crisps. 3 lots of the curtains need repair and are off the runners and don’t close properly. 4. Glasses in the cupboard were really dirty and there were not any complete sets for 8 people 5. Only 1 pan works on the ceramic hob! So hard to cook anything. 6. No black box for glass recycling. 7. Neighbours clearly do not like the property being let and were most unfriendly. 8. Having said all that we did like staying at Hillside but do not think it represents value for money.

Thank you for your feedback and comments from your stay. The change over period has been extended due to covid and has been in place for 2 years. We are now reverting back to earlier check in times. The housekeepers do inform us once they have completed a changeover and then guest are contacted by the Manor Cottages team to inform them of an earlier arrival.Unfortunately this was not the case for your stay. Service and quality of our properties are very important to Manor Cottages, and we have ensured all points you have raised have been rectified including a review of the welcome pack. We have never before received comments on our welcome packs and your comments has been taken on board. We have discussed with the housekeepers in relation to the cleanliness. We have also updated the instructions to guests to provide clearer guidance regarding pans and recycling topics. On checking the property all pans were correct to be used on the induction hob and the AGA. It's a lovely property in a beautiful & peaceful hamlet. The house is well equipped but not as clean as I would have liked with several dead woodlice & cobwebs in the kitchen. The village pub was excellent. My experience with Manor Cottage wasn't good & I wouldn't recommend them or use them again. I found them unhelpful & inflexible.

Thank you for the constructive feedback. I can only apologise for the woodlice. This is not a true representation of us and I'm so sorry you experienced this. The property is so beautiful and in a wonderful area so I'm glad you got to experience it and I do truly hope to welcome you back again in the future and exceed your expectations. • "Yes some comments: An 18."

00 check in does not work for us. With a small dog and 3 month old baby not being allowed into the property until 18.00 makes the travel day very arduous. With a 10.00 departure, it effectively means we only have 6 days at the property. Given that the only realistic way to travel to Swinbrooke is on the A40, to leave later on Friday would have meant hours stuck in traffic jams. An 18.00 check in was understandable when Covid was rife but now it just looks like an excuse. Smaller issues: The TV in the lounge is very difficult to operate. 'Stuart's' note says it should be tuned to AV7, after a very long time trying to make that work, it transpires ot should be AV5! There were no dishwasher tanblte sso we had to buy some. The vet lisited in your notes closed down some while a go. There is no phone signal in the house or anywhere nearby so impossible to contact anyone. A landline would be invaluable especially for emergencies. As you will see I am regular customer of Manor Cottages so I hope you will take my comments into account.

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a constructive feedback, we will defineletly take your comments into consideration, the 18:00 pm check in we are looking into it now to make it a bit earlier, we will have a look at the TV manual and update it alongside the vet information. we will speak to the owner regarding the landline. and as always we look forward to welcoming you again soon. Walking distance to Burford with a range of cafes, pubs, shops or right on the doorstep in Swinbrook or nearby. Very comfortable cottage with nice bedrooms and garden, a really special place. To be really critical in the winter or poorer weather a better TV with either satellite or Netflix access would have been good but we were fortunate with good weather.

Yes, there is a cot but it is a travel cot ( which we couldn't fold up at the end of the week-sorry!) Whilst this was fine for our 11 month Grandson,it would possible not have been big enough for an older toddler. Could this possibly be stated in the cottage information on the web site. Swinbrook is a picture perfect village with everything easily accessible and beautiful local walks. We would certainly stay here in this wonderful cottage again.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your stay. I apologise that the cot wasn't quite what you'd expected. Problems can always occur. The test of any organisation is how they are dealt with. The ladies at Manor Cottages were superb at resolving the problems. They had a temporary freezer delivered and a temporary fridge. They kept us informed of how the various problems were going to be resolved with the least inconvenience to us. They were charming and polite and appropriately apologetic despite none of the problems being their fault. I particularly remember speaking to Jenny and to Claire which was always a pleasure.

The quality of the property was outstanding - decor, furniture, beds, shower etc. The kitchen was well stocked with a superb Miele oven, good sized fridge / freezer and a good sized island for food prep and with bar stools. The instructions on the printed A4 sheets were first rate and the keys all well sited for the doors. Superb portable Bose wireless music unit. Good solid WiFi signal across the house. The location is tremendous - we sat out on the patio on the Sunday morning and could hear the church service next door. And what a place Swinbrook is - the pub just a short walk away and a lovely walk straight from the house either right towards and past St Oswald Church or left through the fields at the pub towards Asthall. The property

Hillside Cottage, Swinbrook is a stunning 5 star cottage, presented to the highest standard and without question one of the finest cottages in the Burford region.

Voted Winner of The Best Holiday Cottage in the Cotswolds in 2019.

The owners have overseen a superb renovation of one of the oldest cottages in this historic village to provide sumptuous (a word we haven't used on a cottage before!) self catering accommodation in a location that overlooks the village church - a truly quintessential spot.

The kitchen is the real heart of the home: beautiful with high quality materials, and Aga and views across the enclosed garden.

The four bedrooms and three bathrooms are similarly stylish, spacious and gorgeous.

We are bowled over by this cottage (one of the team wants to move in!) and we are quite certain you will be too.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £500.

About the location

Burford

Burford is possibly one of, if not THE most famous of the Cotswolds' locations. With its medieval bridge, old stone houses and attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages, Burford is justifiably one of the most picturesque towns in England. Often referred to as the 'Gateway to the Cotswolds', the town was originally a fortified Anglo-Saxon ford which later grew to be an important regional crossroads and wealthy wool town. Located mid way between Oxford and Cheltenham (25 mins each away) it is a little haven of history and beauty that many come to fall in love with when they visit.

The 16th century Tolsey building, once the meeting place for medieval merchants, now houses The Tolsey Museum, a delightful local museum illustrating the town's social and industrial past. The church is stunning, a real gem architecturally with many interesting memorials charting some of Burford's great families. There is also the signature, on the baptisimal font, of Antony Sedley, one of the Levellers besieged in the church in 1649 - three of the ringleaders were executed by Oliver Cromwell's men in the churchyard. History awaits!

With little changing over the centuries, Burford is now very popular with visitors, both for its beauty and history but also for its shopping and antiques, and for the wide variety of places to eat, with restaurants, pubs and teashops. It is an ideal base for visiting The Cotswolds area as it is within easy driving distance of popular attractions such as Blenheim Palace, Sudley Castle, Warwick Castle and several National Trust Houses and Gardens. Bourton on the Water, Bibury, Cirencester and Stow on the Wold are all with 25 minutes from the property.
