We enjoyed our stay at Ballyvoreen. The views are superb. We left with heavy hearts but may well return in the future.

  • "This is a difficult property to review: the location is beautiful, the property is potentially amazing, but the amenities and facilities fall somewhat short of what one would normally expect."

Whilst there were very nice new sofas in the living room and comfy clean beds with good bedding, and copious hot water, there were other areas which made actually staying in the cottage uncomfortable. For example, there was very little in the way of kitchen equipment - no kitchen roll, no washing up liquid, one elderly tea towel, no hand towel, a broken corkscrew (tragedy!!) and barely any cutlery. There was no coffee table in the living room and nowhere to place your coffee cup, very difficult access to watch the television as it is high up on the wall and you have to crick your neck to watch it. There was no bedside table/locker in the second bedroom, no dressing table or mirror in either bedroom and in the end we moved one little bedside cabinet into the living room to use as a coffee table. While we had a lovely holiday, it's one of those places with a little money and thought spent on it that could be AMAZING.

The location is excellent for exploring west Cork. We immediately felt very comfortable and at home. We thought that the cottage was nicer and had more character than the external pictures on the web site suggested.

  • "I had a lovely stay at the cottage in Ballyvoreen."

The house is in a wonderful location away from the hustle and bustle of modern day life. The view from the house of sheep and cows grazing the rolling fields as well as the Galley Head lighthouse was a real tonic. There were two clear nights where the stars put on a majestic display. The distant lights from a passing cruise ship was nice to see. The house had everything that I needed and was very comfortable. The location is a short drive from a number of beautiful beaches. I took advantage of an early morning walk with my dog followed by a dip in the ocean. Water temperatures were very nice in early September. Also a short drive to some lovely walks which included fuchia and blackberry bush filled hedgerows, teaming with bees and butterflies. Lots of historical interests contained in the nearby towns and villages. I would definitely like to return some day.

It’s a nice, basic place to explore the beautiful surroundings from (by car, preferably. Not many hiking possibilities in the near surroundings). The view from the house is stunning. The host is very friendly.

Would definitely recommend. The cottage is airy, bright and comfortable. From the patio, the views out over the sea and to the lighthouse are stupendous. The location is also ideal as a base for touring West Cork and is only a short drive from the main tourist destinations.

  • "We had a lovely stay at the cottage."

It was perfect for our family of 4 and dog. Loads of cutlery etc, though maybe a few more cooking utensils would be helpful (grater, peeler, spatula). The place was clean and comfortable. Wifi did not work for us beyond the first day but that didn’t matter much to us. The beds were comfortable but the double is a standard size which we found a bit small. Loads of hot water, shower works well. The views from the cottage are absolutely beautiful. We would stay here again.

The cottage had everything we needed. It was easy enough to get warm in it and the Wi-Fi (which was vital for me) worked perfectly. It‘s a bright and cozy place. Would return any day to this peaceful place!

Thanks so much for your comments and so glad you had a fantastic week and yes the views are spectacular. The wifi is now very stable and glad you could make good use of it. We have also included instructions for the TV for guest information. I'm so pleased you found everything bright and cosy as we have done a lot of work on the property to improve standards for guest enjoyment.such as two new comfy sofas. We have also redecorated, the property has had new curtains and a new mattress on the double bed. Thank you so much for acknowledging this with your great cleanliness score and giving us a 4/4 for comfort, thank you so much. Look forward to welcoming you back in the future Property Owner

From previous reviews the Owner has amended faults. Lovely cottage. Basic but all you need. WiFi and TV worked. Lots of crockery and cutlery. Bunk beds firm but comfy. Main bed comfy soft mattress. Great to have shower and bath. Futon sofa in lounge can seat x4 adults at a push but another chair would help. Views and location outstanding. Private and quiet. Stars and sunsets were awesome. Bats were seen too! Loads to see in this wonderful area of West Cork.

Thank you for your lovely feedback and yes I am always happy to assist if guests need help. Wifi is great now at the property and we are glad that you had a lovely time. We have included instructions to help people with using the TV so great to see that has helped. Glad you had a great sleep as the main bed had a new mattress in August 2022. We have also now included two comfy sofas which will seat 5 guests. We agree the views are amazing and glad you had a peaceful time. Property Owner

  • "As with previous reviews, this is a beautiful cottage in a stunning spot."

With just a little attention it could be an outstanding holiday home. As it stands it is far below the usual Sykes standards. The beds had been changed and the bathroom cleaned (though the cleaner showed up at 2.30 (we were a bit early) but the rest of the cottage was dirty and woefully ill-equipped. There was very little cutlery, crockery and cooking equipment and these were in dirty drawers. The TV didn’t work (luckily we had our laptop to watch things on). Positives were the actual cottage is really pretty and there was bags of hot water and great water pressure. I’m hesitant to say yes to this review being published but numerous previous reviews mention same and nothing has been done. I contacted Sykes in advance of our stay but this was unsatisfactory.

Thank your for your comment and glad you enjoyed the location and its fabulous view. We have doe a lot of work for the 2023 season including redecorating, new sofas. All crockery and cutlery has been replenished and we have carried out a deep clean.Apologies for any oversight with the cutlery drawers at the time of your stay however we do ask that guests adhere to the check in time to allow our cleaner the full allotted cleaning time for the final touches such as kitchen drawers. We have now included instructions for the TV. We are glad that there was plenty of hot water as this property is excellent for water pressure etc. Property Owner

  • "Having just read your reviews on this cottage I wish I had looked at them prior to booking."

I totally agree with the comments from other holiday makers, unwelcoming atmosphere, strange smell, unable to contact anyone re access , no wi fi no television except BBC 1 without volume, and where was the welcome pack. We have visited Ireland many times over the past twenty years and this is the worst house for lack of equipment, only two cereal bowls, three wine glasses and no cork screw. The bed and sofa were both most uncomfortable, and what about some comfy outside furniture to take in the fantastic view. I noted some of these comments go back several years so come on Mr English owner try the bed then spend some cash to make your cottage the delight it could be.

It was left a lot cleaner than when we first got there by us but the area was outstanding, would we go back yes if it was updated and had a proper clean ,was value for money the week we were there but wouldn't pay anymore in present condition .

  • "I stayed at Ballyvoreen for 3 weeks in October / November for some quiet solitude time and had a lovely stay."

What this listing fails to tell you though, is that there is also a farmhouse on the same grounds. Midway through my stay, a family came to stay in the farmhouse for a week, which I was not expecting. This wasn’t particularly problematic, but I would’ve liked to have known in advance. The cottage itself is very warm and comfortable and while I could have done with a bit more kitchenware for cooking, the place had everything I needed. The twin tub was a bit cumbersome for washing laundry, but I managed and if you are staying for a short time, you probably won’t need it. Jim (who was looking after the place during my stay) was very friendly and helpful with anything I needed. I didn’t have a vehicle, so getting around was more difficult, but not impossible. It meant I stayed local and found some beautiful walks in the immediate locality and got to know some of the neighbours! Have a good pair of boots and wellies to hand if that’s what you want to do. All in all a place I would recommend to stay.

There was no Wi-Fi access as the subscription had not been renewed for upcoming summer bookings. There was no T V signal - due to possible storm damage to the receiver dish. However neither the lack of Wi-Fi access nor lack of T V reception detracted from what was a brilliant break as I had access to e-mails through my mobile phone and I had brought a selection of dvds which I was able to play on my laptop. I very much want to return to this cottage in the future.

  • "The master bed was painfully uncomfortable as well as the couch in the tv area."

There was a lot of spiders webs in the ceiling windows that suggest they haven't been cleaned in months. Also a microwave / washing machine would be really helpful. I got the impression that the owner has done the bare minimum just to get some cash from the property. Also there is quite a lot of damp spores in bed room and it smells as a result.

  • "Overall pretty good, wifi was a plus, clean and comfortable, enjoyable stay overall, the lack of a freezer compartment in the fridge was a bit of a drawback, couldn't buy frozen food or ice-cream."

A microwave would be a plus but not really necessary. No dishcloths and very limited drainage area over sink for all plates, cups, pots pans etc was a nuisance. The place could do with a small table to the left of the sink. The dreadful state of the road leading up to the cottage was for me a major negative, it's severely potholed and very uneven for the first fifty yards, I drive a Honda Civic and ended up damaging the underside of my car by hitting the road two or three time even driving at walking pace and with careful navigation. By the end of the week I was down to one hit per journey but that's still too much. This is very off-putting for future renting, I would rent the cottage again but only as a last resort based on the state of the road in.
